When Is It Time to Start Potty Training a Little Boy?

My oldest (who is mild mental delay) didnt completely potty train until about 4ish. My 6 yr old son was about 2-3 I think, he lives with his dad full time right now.
My youngest my husband and I's 18 month old shows signs like when he has a bowel movement he stands away, and when you ask him about it he pats his diaper. When any of us go to the restroom we ask him lets go to potty and he knows where to go. He brought out the potty chair and he sits on it here and there. More to play but when we say sit on the potty he knows what we are referring to. Most mornings he wakes up with a dry diaper. Being that its been about 4 years since potty training I was just wanting to get some advice.

my son initially showed some interest at about 20 months, but it was more exploration of the potty seat and playing with it. Pretend to potty type of thing. then we went through a phase of that he did not want anything to do with it. He was finally about 3 when he started actually training and shortly after that he was fully trained. A friend of mine's boy would not train until almost 4. They all do it it at their own pace. My daughter is almost 2 and sometimes she will ask to sit on the potty sometimes you have to catch her b4 she does it. All kids go through that phase of thinking it's a new toy, then wanting nothing to do with it then deciding to. We just would always make a point to take him to the bathroom regularly. If he was just adamant about not we didn't force the issue, but just said okay but if you need to potty lets go in here. Because if you force too much you just delay them longer.

I agree with the other mothers that you don't want to push too hard, but we started putting our daughter on the potty soon after she could walk (15 months). We would let her sit there a few minutes after she would eat or every couple hours. Her grandma got her started on books and she would happily sit there if you would read to her. When she did turn 2, the transition to panties was relatively easy.

I have heard that in other cultures, babies are trained much earlier to save on diapers. If he's showing interest, I would start trying. However, if you don't think you can be consistent, it may not be worth it until you are ready. It takes a lot of patience.

My son did the same thing he just turned 2 and he is still not that interested. It is different to be interested in it and just to hate a dirty diaper. If he is telling you before he goes then it is time. I would go ahead and introduce him and see how it goes. What could it hurt. Just dont push it until he is ready. He will tell you when he is ready. My son poops and pulls off his diaper because he hates to be dirty. He will go in the potty but not regularly enough. Give it time. He should be ready about 2-3 most boys are anyway. Who knows. Let him experiment with it and see how that goes. No harm in trying now. Good luck

So this is a new one for me too. So you all got pottie's to "play with"? or get accustomed to anyway ? That's a great idea. I hadnt' thought of that. Our son isn't at all ready to potty train, but he's certainly catching onto things very quickly these days.

sounds to me like you might try introducing going potty to him...let him try pee peeing in it or poo poo if seems willing. but don't be upset if he's not willing yet. most kids i know are not ready until 2-3 years old. since he knows where the potty in the house is, and knows what the potty chair is for, you prolly won't have too much trouble. maybe the next time you need to potty you could take his potty in the bathroom with you both and and ask if he needs to go potty and ask if he wants to go in the big kid potty...and if he is willing to try then give him lots of praise and a treat...if not just say thats ok and try again some other time.

I also have an 18 month old son who is displaying obvious signs of potty training readiness. He will however, announce he is gonna poop before he does and will grab at the front of his diaper before he pees. We are fortunate to have a very vocal son. (probably in part because of the three older brothers he hangs out with none stop) Even though most people think it is way too early, I say if they are showing signs of readiness go for it.
We are currently in potty training, I guess you could say. He has potty chairs in our bathrooms and we will ask him if he wants to use the potty. If he heads to the bathroom we go, if he says "no" we don't. We are not being very aggresive about it at all, not at this point anyway. We all(including the older brothers) will let him know when we are going to use the bathroom and invite him to go.
The first few days about the only thing he would do is go to the bathroom and pee on the floor next to the potty chair.

but a few days ago he actually peed and pooped in the potty chair! Victory was ours!!so of course we had this huge celebration about it, he thought that was pretty cool and is more eager to go now. His successes are still very spotty at the moment, but we have only been doing this for a few days so aren't expecting much. It has been quite a larger success than I had expected it to be at this point though.

Something else, my son loves books so I bought 3-4 potty training books. One in particular "everybody poops" is his favorite book right now. So, you may try that as well.

So I would think that "so what" if he is generally younger than most boys when they start training. If he is ready, start...even if it is at his pace for the time being.

Good luck and here's to many dry days!!!

That is crazy....my 18 month old daughter is doing everything that you descibed. I have tried to start the potty training, but decided to wait until her second birthday to start again. She comes and gets me when she is done pooping and she squats when she pees but she still is having a hard time communicating her needs. We decided it is one thing that can wait so that she or I don't get frustrated so easily. Hope it helps.

I would say go with your insinct, every child is different. However I found that not pressuring your child will bring less head aches. My son was three when he finally potty trained, and then there was still the poopy accidents. we finally got him to potty train because I got some underware from the store and told him that his friend logan gave them to him and he couldn't go potty in them. well good luck with this, and use your instincts... I had a lot of people in my family put me down because he wasn't ready at the time and as far as that goes you can't rush a kid if their not ready. however your son sounds like he might be interested in trying. good luck, chris
