Hi, I have a 9 motnh old and I was wondering if I should move him up to 3rd foods. He is on 2nd foods now but since he is getting closer to a year I thought maybe I should move him up to 3rd foods. He takes 2 bottles a day 8oz. in the morning and 1 before he goes down and he eat fruits, veggies, oatmeal and other jar foods through out the day. I was just wanting to know when I should move him up. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I appreciated everyones opinions. We tried the 3rd food and it didnt go to well. It was too chunky. So I have decided to stay with 2nd foods. As far as his bottles someone commented he needed more. But our ped. said as long as he gets 16oz a day then thats fine. He still is getting plenty of vitamins and nutrients. He also said to make sure he has lots of wet diapers and thats how you can tell if he is hydrated. My son perfers solids over his bottles. When he was 6 months and started solids I had to cut back on solids b/c he was not taking his bottle. HEHE. Well thanks again!

First off I'm thinking he could use another bottle. Normally 24ozs of formula a day is good number to keep him hydrated and give him all his nutrients!

As far as 3rd foods, when ever he is ready! If he can handle the chunks in it then go ahead!

I did the same thing as Lindee. Once my son tasted what we were eating, he didn't really care much for the baby food. Of course he's 2 now, and sooooo picky.
As far as baby food...just as long as they are still getting some formula for the vitamins, I think table food would be fine. Then you get to go to milk and the baby phase is over. :(

If he will eat the 3rd foods, then that is great. I am a firm believer in sticking to baby food at least the first year to 18 months. It has more nutrients and less salt. I would give him the 3rds if he wants it now. THen maybe in 3 months, he'll like the Gerber Graduates or Gerber Lil Entrees. :)

This is probably not the norm but...I never went to 3rd's. I skipped them and went to table food and never looked back. By 10 months she wanted nothing to do with babyfood.

I thought I would tell you a few things I started with -
Canned Beets - Mean I know but she loved them.
Peas, Peas, Peas - She LOVED them!
Black Eyed Peas
Black Beans
Chopped Steamed Brocoli
Steamed carrots
Baked French Fries
Chopped Deli Meat
Ground Beef
ALL noodles
Every kind of sauce you can imagine on the noodles
Lima Beans
Asparagus - THis is still her fav to this day and I hate it!

My boys never really ate the 3rd foods. They are chunkier so when I'd spoon feed them, they would some times gag on the chunks. They did a whole lot better transitioning from the 2nd foods right into table foods cut up.

It's very normal to have the baby eating table food now. Anything that he won't choke on.

If he likes them go for it. My little guy still gags if we try to feed him the Stage 3 foods but he'll eat table food with no problem. Chunky texture, I'm sure. He's also not a pasta fan and alot of the Stage 3's seem to have pasta. We started table foods around 9 months but still gave him alot of stage 2 baby food (and still do) to get his vitamins in. I feel like he gets more nutrients some days than we do. He still doesn't seem to eat enough table food to fill up and he's 17 months old now. I don't think this is the norm though.

if you feel that he can swallow thicker foods and has a easy time chewing than i would try moving him to Stage 3 foods. Gerber Graduates are a great start! Try thickening his stage 2 foods with cereal and see how well he takes to the paste like constancy...if he can swollow with no prob., he is prob ready.

you can also give him sliced bread, gerber grad. dieced fruit and veggies, Pasta pick ups, soups, peas, and other soft foods.
