When Did Your Baby Begin Walking (Not cruising)...late Walking?

Baby number two can walk, but refuses to. She's always been very quick, physically...could hold her head up from birth, rolled over in the bassinet at the hospital, was pushing up at two months, sitting and crawling well by five months, pulling up and cruising by six months. So I figured she would be walking by maybe 9 or 10 months...

Now, she'll be a year old in a few weeks and she won't walk. I know she can...she stands in the middle of the floor, pops up and starts wiggle-butt dancing and waving her arms in the air, squats to pick things up, etc, with great balance...but she won't walk.

Any ideas? And when did yours start walking?

**I just wonder because it seems so odd that she can do so many other things. She gets down off my (high) bed without any help, climbs up and over large obstacles, drags very large toys around...it seems like she just doesn't WANT to.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Laurie A, I just want to thank you for the walk with the toy suggestion! She does take steps if she's not thinking about it, but as soon as she realizes what she's doing she gets down and crawls. Of course, our living room is a circle of furniture, so she cruises super fast all around...but your idea is awesome! I'm going to try tricking her into walking tomorrow! :)

Most kids I know of didn't start walking until 13 or 14 months, and if I remember correctly, doctors aren't at all concerned until after 16 months. Some kids are "perfectionists." They don't really want to try a new skill unless they think they can do it right. My son is like this. He didn't want to write his name until he could do it perfectly (he practiced when no one was watching). He wants to be able to tie his shoes, but he doesn't want to screw up. Makes it hard to practice!

Try not to stress. She'll start walking before you know it.

One of mine didn't walk independently for real until she was almost 18 months. She's now 18, a college freshman on the deans' list and participates in all kinds of sports.

No worries, mama. Oh, and be careful what you wish for...

My daughter walked at 13m. She had been toddling for a while. I had her in the 'soft sole' shoes so she could feel the ground, like the books say to. Dad was getting frustrated with me. She would scoot around the table, waddle when holding your hand, but wouldn't walk alone.

The day she turned 13m, he bought her a pair of hard sole Nikes. He put him on her and she literally TOOK OFF! She's now 4 1/2 and hasn't slowed down!!

That's not late walking!! The average is between 12-15 months. Your daughter has plenty of time!! My son crawled very early, at 4 months. He didn't start officially walking until 13 months, and he was well within a normal time frame.

My daughter didn't walk independently until 1 week after she turned 14 months - she had been holding onto things until then but really would not walk on her own until one day she just suddenly walked by herself from one end of the house to the other without falling or holding onto anything. From that moment on, she was walking - she never crawled again.

My son walked unassisted at 14 months. He was always in the 90th percentile weight wise. I figured his muscles needed to get just a little bit stronger to get him up and going. He toddled for a few weeks then his only speeds were stop and run.

I wouldn't worry about it (as others have said). It's possible that your daughter is just kind of a perfectionist. Mine didn't want to walk until she could really walk; none of this take a few steps and fall down for her. She didn't walk until 16 months. My son, my "early walker" didn't walk until 14 months even though, like you, I thought he'd be running by a year.

I promise she won't be crawling around 3rd grade. What's a couple months here or there?

My daughter was about 14 months. My oldest was about 15 months - but preemie so corrected about 12.5 months. I bet yours will just start one day out of the blue. She just has to decide she wants to!

She doesn't need to walk--she's sufficiently mobile without walking. That's how my kids were too. I had two very active boys, still are years later, and they both walked at 14 months. I expected early walkers too since my mom reports I walked at 9 months, but once they started they really took off!!

Both of my children walked at 14 months. Don't worry about it...once she starts walking, she'll take off and you'll be chasing her for the next few years trying to get her to hold still!! :)

My daughter started walking at 13 months. We did the old wooden spoon trick to get her to walk on her own. Walk with you holding one end of the spoon and let her hold the other end. Do this for a few days and then let go of the spoon where she cannot reach the furniture without walking to it.

My 2nd son started walking at 16 months. He could do it earlier, just refused. He's almost 4 and still lazy. lol He'll walk 10 feet towards the park and sit down saying his legs hurt so bad. Does it with everything... I'll ask him to do something and he'll start, but then flop on the ground and complain he can't. Oh dear, I think I'm in for it! :)

Normal for walking is a big range. My first walked at 10 month and the second it was 17.5 months (I was about to call early intervention since 18 months is when they will provide services for not walking). My best friend is a physical therapy assistant and helped make a push toy roll slower (yarn by the wheels). We used the push toy daily for months and there was continuous slow progress until she just got it. She went from a few steps to walking well in only a few weeks. Also she crawled so fast and climbed a lot before walking. It's not time to worry yet.

She's not late at all. Mine were around 14 mo.
Some babies are nervous about letting go, and are afraid to fall. She'll get her confidence within a few more months :)

well you havent gotten to "late walking" yet But If you're lucky she is the type who doesnt rush into things, likes to be sure she's ready.... If that's true You will be so happy when she's a teen

My first didn't walk until the day after his 15 month mark. He hit every other milestone before time, and he could "walk" but insisted on touching something -even lightly -until that point. He finally took off on his own then! My 2nd started walking at 10 months, but I know lots of people and their kids who didn't walk until well after the 12 month mark. It's perfectly normal.

my son starting walking at 13 months. I would not worry about it. You better enjoy it because when she starts walking there will be no rest for you. I would be more concerned if she was 1.5 yrs and not walking. enjoy it now, while she does not walk.

My daughter didn't start walking until 14 months old. I could tell she knew how but just didn't want to; she just decided she was ready and then she took off and was practically running right away. Walking toys are awesome, and very fun for the kids to play with and use. Don't worry, she'll be off and running soon, and then you'll be wishing that she was just crawling again. Although chasing after a toddler is always a good workout. :-)

My mom said she was so upset because I had not started walking unassisted by almost 12 months. She told my grandfather. he picked me up under my arms and pointed me to a tricycle he had brought as my birthday gift, I took off walking!

Your child sound right on schedule. Does she walk holding your hand or finger? does she feel really balanced? If so, walk with her while you each old onto the same toy, when she is not looking, let go of the toy and see if she will take a step or 2 without you.
