When Did You Introduce Solids to Your Infant?

I know what the books say - but what do you moms actually do? I have always been one, it seems, that waits longer than other moms to start my little ones on solids. I just gave my little guy his first few bites of rice cereal and he is 5 months. Most moms somewhat gasp when I tell them he hasn't had any solids up to this point, as I believe breastmilk is giving him all he needs and I wasn't in any hurry. So many moms respond "Oh I was putting cereal in my son's bottle at 2 months!" We all do things differently, and to each his/her own! Just curious to hear from other moms:
- When did you introduce solids, and how?
- What food did you introduce first, and how often?
- Any other details/information you want to provide about introducing solds, I would love to hear!

I am not needing advice, per se, just more of a curious question. We have already had the green light from our ped for a month. I followed the same scheduled with all my kids, started a little cereal here and there around 5 or 6 months, breastfeeding otherwise for all meals. I was just curious to hear what other moms do, from those who started cereal at 2 months to those who waited till a year old, and why they made that choice.

What can I do next?

Six months-yellow veggies, fruit, meat, green veggies-in that order. I thickened a lot of what they ate with rice cereal. My baby is 19 now! It seems like yesterday!

I think breast milk and formula have the needed nutrients for babies under 1 year of age. They do need to be exposed to solids to teach them to chew and swallow but not for nutrition.

You are doing a good job by waiting in my opinion.

I did cereal at 4.5 months. Then I started actual baby food about 5.5 months. Rice cereal made her constipated. Oatmeal works better IMO.

Her serving size was about the size of what would fit in an ice cube tray.

I started her out on just the one serving of cereal until she got the hang of eating. When I introduced purees at 5.5, I used the same serving size and just added one meal. I alternated fruits one day, veggies the next.

Around 7 months I started feeding her bigger portions, and added a 'snack' (puffs, cheerios, etc.) around lunchtime.

When she was 8ish months, her snack turned into lunch, so now she is on 3 meals.

The rule of thumb (according to my pediatrician) is to nurse/give bottle like you normally would. Then about an hour later offer solids. Let them eat as much as they want, which usually won't be much. So that's pretty much what I have done and it has worked out so far. :).

I was DYING to get her to sleep more than 2 hours since I was back to work when she was 3 months old..Her first cereal (rice) was at 4.5 months. I switched to oatmeal about a week later since she was constipated. Then I did vegetables first...She seemed to eat MORE when I gave her the fruits though and then hated the veggies. ha ha

With my first I waited until she was 6 months and I went slow. We did cereal only for a few weeks and then moved to green veggies then orange, etc, then fruits. With my second I would have been happy to wait until 6 months again, but he was so hungry. He was drinking soy formula and it really is much thinner than the regular stuff and I just think he wasn't getting full. So, we started him on cereal at 4 months but only at bed time. We waited at least a month or two before giving it to him more times/day. We did wait until 6 months to introduce the veggies and fruits. By about 7 months both kids were eating solids 3 meals/day. My daughter was way more into self feeding and was off baby food by 8 months, my son was a bit slower. He went off purees at about 10 months. I don't see any need to rush if I don't have to! LOL! It's more work, more dishes and more groceries! Boo! ;)

Our pediatrician said 6 mo. We were a little over 6 mo. because she was sick. We started with smushed up avocado and home-made mushy banana. We tried rice cereal, but quickly moved to oatmeal. I waited because she didn't need it and it wasn't recommended. It was also recommended to us that we don't put cereal in the bottle. Everything by spoon, and nursing/bottle before solids. I think it was still a couple of months before it was more than just a snack or taste for her. I don't think you're at all unusual. DD had nothing but breastmilk before 6 mo.

For the 1st year of life, breastmilk or Formula is a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition. NOT solids and not other liquids.
This is per our Pediatrician as well.
Solids, introduced at 6 months.
Is typical.
It is only practice. NOT their main meal.
Still breastfeed, BEFORE solids. Otherwise, baby will wean from breast.
Always, still nurse ON-demand. 24/7, day and night.
Don't give solids to replace nursings.

Ask your Pediatrician.

I usually dont start until 6 months. I do cereal first, I dont know why, they always hate it. Then I move to vegetables. I do the same vegetable for 1 week to make sure there are no allergies, usually for lunch and dinner. After I start fruits and veggies (this takes over a month) I do fruit and veggie at lunch and dinner, and then later on introduce meats. I probably didnt do a meat until like 10 months.

I tried baby food periodically but his tongue would push it our of his mouth every time. It wasn't till he was just about a year old till he finally got the hang of it. But I wasn't in a rush. He was doing fine on formula and we transitioned at a leisurely pace.

In our family we start at 1 YEAR, and even then it's not until apx 18-24 months that that we switch over from breastmilk or formula being primary. With my kiddo it was about 50/50 at 18mo tablefood and formula.

We "taste" ahead of that... typically whenever interest is shown (which starts to happen with most babies as their digestive tracts mature enough to START to digest solids it starts to smell good to them)... but there is NOT enough nutrition in table food to support the sheer amount of growth that infants need. I mean, envision the amount of tablefood you'd have to eat to double your weight in 6mo. And you'd just be stacking on fat, which is "easy" for the body to build. Muscle, bone, organ, & nervous tissue is MUCH harder to build. One needs very concentrated nutrition in order to grow as fast as babies need to.

And that's even assuming that their digestive tracts are physically capable of digesting table food yet. A very small percentage can at 2-3mo. About half can at 6mo. Most can by 9mo. A very small still can't at 1 year. Tasting in our family starts at interest, which has done the full gamut, but I have a very large family (over 40 on turkey day, and that's maybe 1/3 of us). I'm not, but we've also got more doctors, nurses, and scientists than you can swing a cat at. So 'family practice' in our family is pretty solid.

UNTIL THEY CAN DIGEST tablefood... it's no different than you or I eating cardboard.

I don't care how many other parents are bragging about feeding their kids cardboard, I'm not gonna do it.

4 mos and 6 mos...I actually used table food crushed/smashed up and also some jar foods. I tried anything he would sample. It's amazing how they gum down these foods like real teeth!

Eight months. My girls were exclusively breast-milk fed before that (nursing and bottles). I saw no reason to start earlier since milk has better nutrition than any solid food. And it wasn't like my kids were not going to learn to eat solid food if I started "too late". When we did start, it was with lentils and avocados, then oatmeal, vegetables, and everything else.

Mine were all 5 months old. The moms you are refering to who added cereal to a bottle at 2 months may have been advised to do that by the ped if the baby had reflux , if not then they really had no reason to add it. I would just ignore there comments...your actually doing it the right way round and introducing it slowly.

My daughter was unable to keep solids down until 14 months, so she started on finger foods (dry cereal, frozen peas and carrots, etc). We also offered her tiny-bite-size pieces of whatever we were having.

We introduced solids (mostly pureed fruits and veggies at first) to my son a at 6 mos. He wasn't interested until he discovered bananas - he leaned over and took a bite of the one I was eating, so I let him go for it. I found wholesomebabyfood.com very helpful, especially the foods for baby chart.

I exclusively breastfed until she was 7 months... then added organic yogurt, oat & barely cereal, then slowly moved up to the fruits and veggies...

There was no reason to hurry with solids - since babies can be completely nourished with just breastmilk for about 18 months.

I'll be taking it really slow with baby #2 which is on his way in July.

Our pediatrician gave the greenlight at 4 months for our twins. I waited until he said it was okay, and we NEVER put cereal in the bottle. Babies that young are supposed to wake up to feed, and I breastfed, too. The doctor also told us not to put cereal in, but we wouldn't have anyway despite pressure from my MIL.
