I have a 3 month old and am curious to find out what babysitting fees run these days. Do you tip a sitter?

Z.,
The only babysitter we have ever used came well reccommended and charged $12 an hour. I thought this was a little high however, she also did laundry, tidied up the kitchen, changed the sheets on the beds, and straightened the baby's room when our(3 mth.old) baby was napping. I was willing to continue to pay the $12/hour because she was also great with our daughter. Sadly, she has moved on and now I realize she was really worth it as I have to begin a new search. Hope that this helps.

Hi,

I have an 8 month old so not too long ago this was new to me. I pay my sitters $10 an hour. My friend tell me sitters can run between $10-$15 and hour. I would ask your prospective babysitter how much she charges, but for one child I would think between $10 and $12. Good luck!

we paid $10/hr but that is on the cheap side from what I hear. I think between $10-15 is normal. No tip. Our baby is 7 1/2 mos.

I think the going rate is $10 an hour with one child to babysit. We have a 2 year old and that's what we've paid every sitter that she's had since she was just a baby. One sitter asked for $12 per hour, but she is older and in grad school, so we were ok with that.

Hi Z.:
I pay between $6 an hour for a high school girl and $7 an hour for a college grad. But the going rate may be more in Lincoln Park.
As far as tips so, I sometimes round up to the ten. Definetly do that if the sitter has done a good job and you want her to come again.
Also-check references!!!!!!!! I've had luck posting at local colleges and Craigs list. Good luck-R.

Apparently in our neighborhood (Hyde Park/ University of Chicago) you can expect to pay $10-12 per hour for a babysitter. I don't know if you should tip or not...

Hi Z.,

Congrats! You're going to get a variety of answers on this, but here's what I do. If the sitter drives I pay them 10 an hour. If they need me to pick them up or drop them off I pay 8. For a 3 month old you're going to want someone experienced with infants obviously, so you'll probably pay on the higher end. I don't tip them because we are generous with our payscale. If they are sitting a long stretch and need to eat I leave them pizza money. My sitters have been thrilled to get the rate we offer, but I always have great sitters who pay a ton of attention to my daughter and I can completely rely on the. In fact, I have two sisters who fight over who gets to come...word gets out when you're good to your sitters!

I usually pay $10 for one child and $12-13 for two. I generally hire adults but with teenagers, I've been told they charge less. It depends on what you're comfortable with.
