I've about had it. I have never had strep (well that I remember) before and my poor family of 5 has had it now 5 times this winter. Does anyone know anything about this. Doctor just keeps sending those of us who test positive home with antibiotics but this is getting ridiculous. I hate antibiotics, I hate that I am breastfeeding and taking them I hate that my poor 10 month old gets strep I am so frustraited right now. What are we doing wrong. We are clean, tidy people and wash hands frequently. :( Just feeling sick and annoyed

p.s. we don't have any pets at home or see any pets frequently

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called this morning and left a message to try and get the whole family in. We have changed out toothbrushes like they reccomended each time, I have not changed bedding immediately after the 24 hours so I will take that step next. We are big hand washers here, and to be honest this is the first time since my eldest was born 6yrs ago that we have ever been this sick. It is just no fun. I am really beginning to wonder about resistance or a carrier.

My husband works for Johnson Wax and they have a company store. I have taken it upon myself to provide my son's pre-school class with the wipes. In the beginning of the year everybody brought in Lysol wipes. My son ended up with a staph infection in less than two weeks of school starting.

One of the teachers compared the Lysol wipes to the Scrubbing Bubbles wipes and only the Scrubbing Bubbles killed strep. Ever since I have been buying the wipes there hasn't been one kid out with strep. I really found that hard to believe but the other teacher chimed in and said that same thing. I would have NEVER thought Scrubbing Bubble wipes would help that much. It also helps that I get a great deal on them at the company store!

Yes this is terrible! Strep seems to be more rampant this year than years past, but maybe that's just me! Like others have mentioned, your toothbrush can be a silent threat! You may have to do a deep clean of your house and make sure you really killed it! Also, have your doctors cultured your strep...as in put it in the petri dish and grew it to see if it was resistant to anything? If you are getting it back all within a week or two then it's possible it's resistant. As others mentioned, make sure you are taking the full course of antibiotics! Hang in there...it's almost spring!

Join the club. My family of five has been dealing with this for a month now. We have been going back and forth to the doctor to get antibiotics. We finally had to all be on antibiotics at the same time instead of only a few of us at a time. This caused all of us to break free from strep. So try getting your doctor to prescribe the antibiotics to you all at once and then you should be clear in about a week. Good luck!

are you throwing out toothbrushes? Use a new toothbrush when you start your antibiotic and then toss that one and start using a new one when you've completed your antibiotics.
Strep seems to develop when immune systems are low. Antibiotics lower your immune system. Start focusing on boosting your immune system with vitamins, probiotics, and fish oils.

Yucky! This happens at my parents house a lot! I still have young siblings at home and when an illness is introduced it can last forever! Strep is one they are always getting. Two things we've learned-
#1) throw out your toothbrushes everytime someone gets it. Otherwise you may just be re-infecting yourself. if someone in the home wears a retainer, mouth guard, etc. It should be disinfected.
#2) dogs can be a carrier of the virus. If you have one, it may be worth taking your pooch to the vet. It doesn't make them sick or show any symptoms so you'd have to have your pet swabbed. This may also be true of cats, though I'm not sure about that.

I hope you all start to feel better soon. Strep can really take a toll on everyone. Especially repeat cases :/

I hope you all feel better soon

Are you completely finishing the antibiotics? If so but they prescribe the same one maybe ask for a different one. Are you throwing away your toothbrushes and replacing them after you've been on the antibiotic 24 hours? I'm trying to think other things they've told us. It's not fun!! Hope everyone's well soon!

YUP-its ran its way through our house this year as well....one of the main things is to make sure you wash all pillowcases and throw out the toothbrushes and get ya some new ones. Also I agree with the others that perhaps your family might be building a resistance to the antibiotics perhaps. Also yes some people can be "carriers" of strep so I have heard but I am by no means a Doctor. Also hand-washing is a big deal too....Personally this year I started making the kids and myself wash our hands as soon as we walk through that door. On top of that I take lysol about once a week and spray down the door knobs in the home as well as lightswitches and the hand rail going up the steps. Now whether that has helped or not but at least it makes me "feel" better that it was done but I am also a little bit of a germaphobe as well ;()) I'm sorry I hope your family gets rid of this once and for good and get to feeling better soon!

Aren't some people carriers?

Does the Doc keep giving you all the SAME antibiotics? Or a different one each time?
Resistance, can build up.. then another type of antibiotic has to be used.
Not all antibiotics may be effective on it, depending on what strain it is.

I was trying to remember what my coworker did a year ago; she kept catching strep infections and she went to a specialist to see why her immune system seemed non-existent. I thought it was an immunologist, so I googled it and came up with this similar question from Mamapedia two years ago--maybe it will help?

I've never posted a link on a response before; hopefully it works. :)

Do you have pets in your house? Cats and dogs can carry strep and pass it on to people. It's also possible for people to be carriers of strep but never really have it. They can pass it on to others too. It's very possible that someone you come into contact with often is passing it on to your family.

It is highly contagious. Antibiotics is the only way to rid of it, unfortunately. You say you are clean tidy people and wash hands frequently. Did you know that putting an unwashed finger in your eyes, nose, and mouth are the ways we get sick? Imagine this scenario for a moment: You walk into a bathroom, wash your hands, open the door with the hands you just washed and touch your eyes. You just introduced a germ into your body, even though you washed your hands, they look clean, you just picked up a germ(s) you cannot see on your seemingly clean hands and infected yourself by touching your eye(s). It's a very common mistake we all make but IF you make yourself aware of what you are doing, you can stop from doing it. When my eyes itch, I put my finger under my shirt and use my shirt to touch my eye(s). If my nose itches, I do the same thing or use the top of wrist to touch my nose. I never put any foreign objects to my lips. Again, it's very easy to do: you are writing something down and you absentmindedly put the pen to your lips. I catch my husband doing this ALL the time and it's no wonder he gets sore throats. Since your whole family is catching strep, you need to be diligent that nobody is drinking from the same cups or sharing food on plates. I have stopped nibbling from my children's plates when they are finished eating and there is something left. I also do not share any cups, straws, bottles of water, etc. with any of my family members. Just because they look healthy doesn't mean they are not carrying something that could make me sick. Disinfect all door knobs on a daily basis until the strep in your family is gone and then make sure your family understands that they must always wash their hands BEFORE they eat. It's a rule in our house whenever we come in from wherever we came from, we always wash our hands. At school, I have hounded my children with the "wash your hands before lunch and snack time" rule. They are hardly sick. Boil or replace tooth brushes once an illness is gone. I no longer keep my toothbrush in the same container as my husband's tooth brush because I discovered that sometimes our brushes touch and there is a way to get sick too. Hand towels in the bathroom: this is a discovery I made: my husband and kiddos have been using the hand towel to dry their faces. When we are sick, we use paper towels more often but use a hand towel for the clean hands.

Do you throw away your old toothbrush after 24 hours on the antibiotics? You could be reinfecting yourself otherwise.

Any chance you have a pet at home? I have heard that a dog can be the carrier of strep and reinfect the family? You may want to check that out if you do have a pet.
