What Will Happen to "Paid Time Off" If I Go Part Time?

Hi gals! I live in CA, and I wondered if anyone knew what would happen if I switch to part time at work as far as my accrued vacation time goes. I know I won't be eligible for benefits any more, but what about the PTO I already have? I appreciate any advice.

What can I do next?

Talk to HR. Some companys will convert it, some will say "use it or lose it," some will cash them out (pay you for the unused days). You'll just have to ask.

only your company can answer that question. i would suspect it goes away too. most part time jobs in my experience don't offer pto. but it would depend entirely on the company.

You're going to have to talk to HR. You might have to use it up before you switch to PT status.

In Minnesota, the accrued PTO has been earned and is yours, but may have an "expiration date" that it must be used by. I would talk this through with your HR person to be sure, because state employment law and company policies differ.

In CA once you have earned your vacation it is yours to keep. Employers would like you to use it up to use it up in the event you leave and they have to pay you a chunk of change! PTO is their policy and you will have to see how you will now accrue it. They are permitted to say that you must use your sick days, personal days and PTO days in the same year.

That really depends upon your employer (unless you actually work for the state). You need to ask your human resources department or your supervisor.

You should still have that time banked and able to use it or they should have to pay it out to you. To be sure, ask your employer.

ask your employer what would happen and get it in writing so there are no surprises. You can always use up your accrued vacation time before you go to part time status if you will lose it. good luck!

It depends. With some companies, when you switch to a 30 hr work week from a 40 hr work week, your accrued vacation time will be converted.
In other words, if you have 3 weeks vacation accrued, you still will have those 3 weeks - not more than that.
Your company might have a threshold for what it considers part time. At my company, 30 hrs a week is still considered full time as far as benefits are considered. 20 hrs a week is part time and benefits accrual is not the same.
HR should be able to tell you all you need to know.

Company policies will vary....Some PTO goes away if it is not used by a certain date. I suspect you would still accrue PTO but on a reduced rate according to your part time status. Go talk with your HR specialist. Get everything in WRITING.

Blessings....
