What Type of Doctor Would You Choose?

I'm about to have my 3rd baby boy and we don't have a doctor chosen for him. We moved to the area 6 months ago and haven't needed to take my older boys to see anyone (we don't currently have insurance on them) but the baby will be on Medicaid. We took the older boys to our family practitioner because I really knew him well and felt comfortable with his care. The hospital I'll deliver at is about 25 minutes away from home and I know there are doctors closer to me that I could take him to...the hospital recommended I could wait and see if I liked the oncall ped and maybe just use him? I don't know if that's what I want to do or if I should find a family doctor closer to us. What would you do?

What can I do next?

M., I just sent you a message about my pediatrician with the phone number of her clinic. I absolutely love her! That clinic also accepts medicaid patients.

When we took a birthing class, we found our pediatrician there at the class. He was there for the later classes that covered things like umbilical cord care. We also got to meet the oncall ped after our daughter was born and we didn't like him very much.

You can call most doctor's offices and set up an appointment just to go talk to them as well as some of the nurses. Its almost like doing a job interview, only you are in charge and are the one making the final decisions.

If you attend church, you could also ask the parents there who they recommend.

I know of a great doc that I trust so much. I delievered my twin boys at provo valley. The on-call doc ended up being the greatest. Dr. Jospeh Johnson. I would recommend him to anyone who wants a loving doctor who really cares. My kids all love going to the doctors and seeing doctor Johnson. My kids are also on medicaid. His office # is:###-###-####

i switched to a family practice from a pediatrician because my favorite pediatrician moved and the family practice was closer to my house, but now i am switching back to utah valley pediatrics. i found the pediatricians more up to date on children specifically. the family practice seemed to be guessing a lot and were not as concerned about my kids' immunizations and other regular checkups being up to date. so it's worth the travel to me now. and pediatricians always have toys or a fish tank, so if there is a long wait, you know your kids won't get bored. my favorite dr with utah valley pediatrics was bailey, but he is in orem now. i was in the same situation as you when my second son was born and dr bailey was the oncall dr. dr later is part of the uvp group, but has his own office in the provo hospital. so i have a choice of locations depending on what is convenient for us that day. we've only seen him once, but i liked him a lot.

Hey M.,
Where do you live? I have a WONDERFUL pediatrician. He is part of a big network, but it is here in the valley. Its Utah Valley Pediatric. I have been to see a few different ones for the after hours clinic and so far we have liked everyone we've met. Our actual doctor is Matthew Cornish at the Timpanogos Clinic, but like I said, they have several different locations. Hope this helps. Oh yeah, they do take medicaid.

I would ask around and see who your new friends and neighbors go to. Ask questions pertaining to care, availability, friendliness, office efficiency, etc.- and don't forget the all important question "Do you have to wait very long in the waiting room?" Probably a pediatrician would be best, but if people recommend a family practitioner, that would be good, too. Its been my experience that family practitioners are very good and usually cheaper.
