What to Wear with a Strapless Dress

Hi Mamas!

Can someone help me out with my accessories (shoes, jewelry, hair)? My hubby is going to be the best man in a black tie evening wedding in New Jersey in April, so I'll be up at the head table. I picked out an elegant dark purple strapless gown, but have no idea what to wear with it. Admitedly, I am one of those fashion-lacking people, but this may be my only chance this decade to get really dressed up and I want to do it right.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your great advice! I've started practicing with some sleek updo's for my hair (picture me in my PJ's with a french twist - my husband is still laughing). I want to focus on the dress, so I really like the idea of simple silver jewelry and nude colored shoes. I still need to go shoe shopping (poor me) but I already have some nice dangly silver earrings that should do the trick. I think I'll skip the necklace. Oh, and my mom bought me a pashmina to match the dress, so I think I'm set!

You are all wonderful!

Hi S.,

Just happened to see your request and thought I'd give a couple of thoughts. I'm no fashion expert, but you've already got a dress and it sounds beautiful. I would go to a good store and get a great bra. I would keep the hair smooth,& sophisticated styling. Not sure what your hair is like, but I wouldnt over do on a bunch of curls. I would get no more than a 3 " heel and if you can find a nude color pair of heels or something that blends with your foot I think it would be nice with your dress. As far as a bag and jewelery, again I'd keep it simple and sleek esp. since you're on the East coast. Keep your chin high and remember the best thing to wear is always a smile. Enjoy the evening!

Great to hear you are going out and getting a chance to dress up. I am a hair dresser and a tip I will give on the hair is up if your hair is long enough. For strapless dresses updo's are the best look it let's the dress show. Keep the jewerly silver is good small nothing large or gaudy. Shoes silver to match jewerly or black with a nice heel. Keep it elegant and you can not loose. You will look great.
Hope this helps. Have a great time.

Hi S.,

This is right up my alley. I have a jewelry business where I share fashion tips and would love to help you out. I can even show you how to get some for free.

Give me a call. I would love to show you what I have. My sister is also a make up artist. I am sure she could show you what colors are best for you.

I can help you in the jewelry arena. I sell reasonable priced fashion jewelry and have a number of things that would look perfect with an elegant strapless dress. I live in Grass Valley and meet with you personally if you'd like. You can email me direct at ____@____.com if you would like.
I feel for you. I had to go to my brothers swanky wedding a couple of years ago in the Bay Area. I felt totally out of place coming down from the "hills". It actually wasn't as bad as I expected and I pretty much was able to fit in. Being comfortable in your clothes and accessories is KEY! You'll be fine. Just know that you look awsome and your husband will feel like the luckiest guy in the room!

How exciting for you! Have you thought about going back to the place you bought the dress and ask for help?

One time my husband and I were going to a nice place and I didn't have a clue how to put the accessories together. I remember how embarrasing it was to ask, but I asked the store clerk for HELP!!! And, she gave me a lot of great ideas and we came up with something that I just loved.

If you can't go to the store wher you bought it, don't be afraid to take it to an accessory store and ask for help, or BETTER YET, take a fashion conscious friend with you - you'll have a good time getting together and she will love helping you.

Good luck!
