What to Send to a Bereaved Family----looking for Meal Delivery

Someone I know lost her husband recently to Lou Gerig's disease. My first thought is to send food, but I'm sure they're bombarded with food right now from friends and church. So I'm thinking of either a restaurant gift card where she can all and order food when she's ready. Or, a home chef that might be able to come to her home and prepare some meals, but that might be too invasive. And finally I've thought of a delivery service to deliver meals. Can anyone recommend a really good food delivery service, or have any othe ideas on how to provide meals? Perhaps something you have done for someone. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My mom makes meals that freeze... like big lasagnas and stuff like that so that after all the food that's there is gone, they can pull it out and pop it in the freezer...

I had a cousin who had ALS or lou gerig's. I was a caregiver for him for almost a year. Awful. I feel bad for your friend. I know you are thinking food but how about maybe a donation to the ALS Association? I know with my cousin the ALS association was a very big part of his life and we were always doing fund raisers. Just a thought.

Omaha Steaks has complete meal delivery. Google Omaha Steaks and coupons or deals. I don't have one now, but I usually get codes to get $80 worth of food for $39. You get a few steaks, some chicken breast, pork, and some side dishes. It's enough for 3 or 4 meals. We sent this to my aunt and uncle after my aunt had heart surgery and the loved not having to do to much, but not having something completely prepared.

I vote for the gift card. It's easier for her to use. And what a good idea! Loving friends and neighbors may bring almost more food than the family can use (in some cases). But in a few weeks, your friend will need the lift that your gift card might provide, and she will remember that she and her family are still thought of and cared about.

Rather than assume they have plenty of food, why not send them something they can serve now and freeze for later if necessary.

I also vote for the gift cards. I just spent 10 weeks on bedrest and we had so many sweet people bring food over. There was just so much and we couldn't keep up. Even with freezing it. Gift cards were so nice because we were able to put them away until we needed them. I am so sorry for her loss!

Gift cards are wonderful. When my sister lost her daughter, her boss coordinated with everyone in the office who asked how they could help her. He delivered meals made by co-workers about every other day to her house (she didn't want visitors), and she also received several hundred dollars worth of restaurant gift cards from her co-workers. The best part was that everyone also attached menus to the gift cards, and most of the restaurants offered delivery services. Good luck to you. You are being a good friend.

I don't know where you live but courier cook.com is awesome. I think they are only in Boston and San Francisco right now. They connect you with someone in the area who will cook basically whatever you want.

If you have it in your area~

I would recommend a gift certificate to Trader Joes (they have tons of stuff in small 1-2 people portions) that requires just heating up...and is terrific. All sorts of different things for different tastes...and tons of warm and eat stuff for the non cooking types.

Or...there are places like UBake that also has premade items...she can save the GC for when the casseroles from friends stop floodind in.

Also, larger cities have pre made meal shops, too. They have a set menu each day, and you call in your order and pick-up (names are escaping me right now).

Great idea to help her out further down the road. Kudos to you for being such a good friend.
