All you want to feed at this age is baby food. My ped. told me to introduce vegetables first from light to dark (ie: squash, sweetpotatoes, carrots, then greens) because the darker ones are harder to digest. Introduce all foods for 3 days to test for allergies before you move onto another. When you get through the veggies, then move to fruits. By the time you get through all the foods in a couple months, you'll be ready for 2nd foods etc. The reason my doc said to do vegetables 1st is so they develop a taste for them instead of the sweetness of fruit. It must be true b/c my 2 year old is a vegetable nut!! (my hubby and I are NOT). Stick with baby food and cereal for a while.

L.,

I have a question. Why does your son spit up so much? Does he have acid reflux? Mine does and that's why I am asking. If he doesn't have acid reflux, it could be the rice cereal. He may have some sort of allergy with regards to the rice cereal. When did the spitting up start. My son is 7 months and right now we are just doing the 1st Foods by Gerber. We will start on the second foods when he's about 8 months. The first foods and milk seem to be enough for him now. Oh and I do the Oatmeal Cereal and Rice Cereal as well.

Hi L.! Listen to what your child is telling you, and you will be fine! At 6 months, my daughter was eating anything I fed her, including little bits of potato salad. Honestly, she got a taste of everything we ate. The difference was, my daughter never spit up. NEVER! Seriously..... So I never had any of those concerns. Fruits are excellent, so definitely start giving him yummy fruits. Apple Sauce, Pears, Bananas, Strawberrys. Squash was one of my daughter's favorites :o). You can buy the gerbers, or you can puree it yourself. Good luck, and definitely start giving him a variety, and see what his reaction is. It's fun finding out what their favorite foods are.

Avocado is a great first food. Banana, too, but I always held off on the "sweet" stuff for fear my kids would eat nothing else if they had it first.

By the way, if people are telling you negative things about refined grains like standard rice cereal, there are a couple of great whole grain baby cereals on the market (one brand is Earth's Best). A lot of standard grocery stores are carrying these brands now, but if you can't find it you can check a
Whole Foods store. Good luck!

I would feed the baby veggies first, not refined carbs. Those rice cereals, etc., at the store really isn't necessary to feed a baby. It's just teaching them to love carbs (and we here in America, eat way too many). I think the best first food is avacado! Then move on to the veggies, then fruits. Veggies and fruits are the best for the baby, as they are for us.

If you want to save money with added 'stuff', you can cook carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, green beans, etc., yourself, then puree them and spoon them into ice cube trays, then put the cubes once frozen, into a freezer ziploc bag. It's easy and wonderful to just get a cube out and eventually a variety of cubes out and feed the baby.

Good luck!

Hi Lora

I fed my twin bananas. I know everyone says to hold off on fruits until you explore all vegetables, but they were easy to puree and my girls loved them! It was a meal I could count on. I would also buy frozen vegetables a lot. I would boil them and puree them for meals. After one or two servings of each vegetable, I would buy mixed bags and offer a variety. After a few months, frozen mango was great to offer also. It was winter and the selection of fresh fruits were limited. Just a few suggestions! Good luck!

Hi! You have really good advise so far. I made most of by child's babyfood and I started with the same. Sweet pot, green beans, carrots. For the bananna, use a fresh one and just smash it up. It is SO easy to make thier food and saves a ton. Setting a good vegetable routine now will make him want them later, at least mine still does. For the spitting up, have you tried chiropractic care for him?? It clears it up very quickly and will help with his growth and development:) Best of luck to you guys! Oh, you can also give an oz of apple juice, etc. with 4-6oz of water in his bottle. Make sure you use spring or purified water or distilled.! This will help with his eletrolyte balance:)

Hey there!
I have been buying frozen organic peas and green beans- cooking and pureeing them. I use the water the veggies were cooked in to thin the puree. Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, bananas, avacados, peaches, pears, etc... are all good too. I also buy unsweetened natural applesauce and give him that as well. One thing that someone mentioned that I would steer away from are strawberries (raspberries and blackberries also)- they tend to be highly allergenic foods and may also cause a red diaper rash. I'd wait until after 1 year. Good luck!
