What to Do in San Diego?

My husband is traveling to San Diego for business and I am going with him so we can have our first kid free mini vacation. We will only be there three days, one and a half days he will be in meetings, so I will be solo during the day for a while. Any suggestions on what to see/do while there would be greatly appreciated.

What I would do if I were on my own:

Go to Mission Bay and rent a bike--bike from Mission Bay up to La Jolla. If it is warm enough, you can snorkel or just enjoy the beach. You can either ride back to Mission Bay, or I believe you can do a 1-way trip and a shuttle will bring you back to Mission Bay.

Where to begin? What interests you?

San Diego is a big enough city to have something to appeal to anyone. Zoo is world-class. Sea World is more commercial than the Birch Aquarium, but lots of fun.

Balboa Park has a raft of museums to choose from.

History? Old Town and the mission. Oh - you can also tour the Midway.

The beach - depending upon how soon you will be there. Weather is nice year round, but the water temp does get chilly during the winter.

Have a great time!

The zoo is wonderful, the aquarium is wonderful, Old Town is wonderful. You can go out on the ocean. You can take a bus tour of the whole place. You can go to a beach. You can take photographs if that's something you like to do. You can SHOP!

If you're sans kids and want to skip the zoo, we liked going to the beach
and touring the docked Naval ship, the Midway. Very interesting to see
how how our Navy lives on those ships.

We had dinner in old town. Great food!

Have a fun kid-free vacation.

Park at Horton Plaza, shop and you can walk from there to the Gaslamp quarter. Used to be if you buy something or eat at a restaurant at Horton Plaza, they will validate your parking ticket. The Midway is in the general vicinity.

Coronado Island - boutique shops and art galleries, wander through the Hotel del Coronado and walk along the beach.

Birch aquarium in La Jolla.

One of my favorite things to do: Stroll through Balboa Park. Stop in at a couple of museums along the way. Sundays 2pm there are free organ concerts at the Organ Pavillion.

I went whale watching in November in San Diego. That was a lot of fun and I got to see a humpback whale. Back then, the border was a little safer, so I took the trolley to Tijuana with a friend, and we had a blast. I don't know if I would go there now. :(
And of course, what everyone else said- the ZOO!

Looks like Tricia W covered it all.
But, she left Seaport Village off the list. Lots of fun to wander around and shop or eat. http://www.seaportvillage.com
And, Balboa park is beautiful to see and offers more than just museums http://www.balboapark.org
