Hello mommy's, I am having trouble figuring out what to put in my 3 yr. old daughter's lunch for her school. She is a VERY picky eater so her menu is pretty small. Normally I would give her some sort of peanut butter sandwich (pb & jelly, pb & honey, pb & banana, etc.) but there apparently are some children at the school that are allergic to peanuts so no peanut products are allowed. I have been giving her yogurt, fruit, fibber bars, crackers, but it is all just snack food. I want to be able to give her a REAL lunch without having to put microwaveable mac & cheese bowls or something in there!! Does anyone have any suggestions for something I can give her that is at least half way good for her and that is not just snacks? I can put things that need to be heated and they will warm it up for me. By the way, she won't eat meat, except chicken every once in a while. I have also done the cheese pizza on occasion but I would like to get away from the cheese and bread thing if I could. Any advice is greatly appreciated!! thank you for your help!

So What Happened?

Thank you all SO much!! I had never thought to try another "nut" butter. I will ask the school to make sure it is just peanuts and not other nuts as well. I am also going to try the cookie cutter sandwhich idea that might be fun. I have tried the tuna and chicken salads and she won't eat them but she does like eggs so I am going to try the egg salad next and maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks again for all the wonderfull ideas it is very much appreciated.

If she won't eat meat, try a grilled cheese sandwich. Have you tried giving her the little smokies or the vienna sausages?
My son likes the smokies -- he only eats chicken nuggets, smokies and fish sticks. Sometimes I can trick him to eat breaded popcorn shrimp...or a fried chicken drumstick; or roasted turkey. He's 4 1/2 now.
But at 3 and younger he was extremely picky...I just had to keep re-introducing new foods to him....just keep trying it every few weeks. She might surprise you one time.
My son used to HATE mac n cheese and any kind of pasta (including spaghetti/meatballs). We were at Gattitown the other day and I just happened to put some Mac n Cheese on his plate (since he doesn't like pizza either!) and he tried it and loved it! So now I finally have something else to add to his menu.

Any of your nut butters would work-like Almond butter, with a little bit of honey or her favorite low sugar jam. You can try the tortilla's rolled up with her favorite fillings or possibly pita bread with tuna (?) Try egg salad, hard boiled eggs, chicken salad (if she likes chicken) what about turkey? You can buy the boneless, skinless turkey breasts. My grandson son (also a picky eater) loves that just by itself. He is still getting the protein without all the bread! Then add your snacks. Carrot sticks, celery sticks, apple wedges. I too have used the cookie cutter thing with my children and I also used it with my grandson. He is 9 and still loves to come to Granny's get his cookie cutter sandwich.

Check with your school to see if they will allow you to use SunButter instead of peanut butter. My daughter would be one that is allergic to peanut butter. You can purchase SunButter from Kroger stores in their Health food section. SunButter tastes, smells, looks just like peanut butter minus the peanuts. It is made with sunflower seed oils. I give this to my very picky eater. Good luck!

make a sandwitch ham and cheese or anykind but the trick to getting them to eat it is use a cookie cutter a heart or star. You can also let her help you do this my oldest daughter is almost 6 and we have been doing this since she about 3. It is great!! We have mini size cutters and a sandwitch will make about 4 small shapes just right for their little hands to hold

My kids enjoyed dipping carrots and cucumber slices into ranch dressing. Green grapes? Have you tried these?

S.,

My daughter is allergic to nuts, so we started using the Soynut butter. It is REALLY good. My husband and I can hardly tell the difference in flavor, and especially if you put it with something else. Target sells it, and I know Kroger does in their health food section. It's really good, and really healthy!!!! Try it :)

Yogurt, fruit and raw crunchy veggies are great, also, you can give her baby food in addition if you want her to have a meat. Also, you can puree your own food. That is what we did when she was 3. Those can be considered meals.

We have the no peanut thing at our preschool too! We can however use soy butter and almond butter (with a little honey to make it sweeter. I have sent half sandwiches, chicken nuggets, soy butter with crackers, string cheese, mac & cheese, and sometimes leftovers. I also send yogurt and little snack type foods in my kiddos lunch, and fruit. I have picky eaters too, but I'll send things that I know they will eat and leave our food battles for at home.
