Hi mom! So my 28th month old daughter has been taking off her diaper a lot lately. When we go in to get her up in the morning, she is naked with the diaper on the floor. she also does this when we put her in time out (in her crib). She usually pees on the floor or in her crib after this happens. We have tried potty training but she is not interested in the potty at all. She won't sit down on it at all (even after trying all the tricks). I've even tried sitting her on it while watching a show. She won't do it. I've even put big girl panties on her and immediately she takes them off. I have no idea what to do. It's getting really old and I am out of ideas. Anyone else had this problem? Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks mamas! After reading your responses, I thought, " why didn't I think of that?"! I put her diaper on backwards and right now she has yet to take it off. When she figures that out, we'll do duck tape. Thanks again for all or your advice! I am hoping soon she'll be ready to potty train.

Duct tape worked wonders when my son kept taking his diaper off. Just put a strip across the front to cover the tabs and she won't be able to get it off.

Put the diapers backwards...or snappy crotch tops over the diaper?

All I can say is I feel your pain. My daughter has been doing this since 15 months, and she's 26 months now... this a.m. she took of a poopy diaper in her crib. Yucky.

She also takes it off right before she falls asleep. In MN winter that is a problem since she takes off her PJ's too. It's been double digits below zero at night here - she can't sleep naked. I go in after she's sleeping and redress her and rock her to sleep (she won't lay down after I wake her to redress her).

We've been working on potty training too - we go in fits and starts. I think she is not really ready yet, even though she's been interested in it for months.

You live in TX, can you just let her be naked during the day? Maybe if she is in a dress and naked you can work on the potty some. She's big enough to get the fact that she's peeing on the floor. Keep her in the kitchen or some place easy to clean up, and have the potty chair right there. If you catch her starting to pee, plop her right on the potty.

Good luck, know you are not alone dealing with this behavior.

My little girl was doing the same thing at 7 mnths. I think it is part of developing a curiosity about their body. The problem is it can really overload your time with extra laundry. I tried using one piece outfits. They make it where she is unable to get to her diaper to take it off. You could try suspenders or one pieces. Also give her some time without the diaper like she wants. Maybe get a plastic sheet or changing pad for the crib. That will make it less of a mess to clean up if she does pee.

you gotta get creative. dont make it easy to get the diaper off. attend to her faster, maybe before she decides to undress? She probably is old enough to train but she's got some control issues it looks like.
I'd get a supply of childrens books on using the potty and brain wash her with them for awhile, maybe she'll get the "hint".

My son did this as well, it was awful. We finally wound up putting duct tape all around his diaper for naps and bedtime. This made it impossible for him to get his diaper off.

We used those thin cotton sleep sacks. She could stand and walk a little but couldnt take them off or climb. Bonus was she never learned to climb out of her crib!

My twins did this also and would pee and play in there poop. For a while putting the diaper on backwards helped but they figured that out too. What we do now is put footy pajamas with the feet cut of on them bAckwards. Best of luck to you.

She just likes the process of unwrapping...
put her diaper on backwards.
Put a diaper cover over her diaper backwards
put something like footy jammies, or overalls, or a jumper on so she can't reach her diaper.

It's a phase that some babies go through.

Have fun!

Have you tried putting her in clothes she cant easily get out of? Backwards footy pjs with the feet cut out? I had one friend who had to duct tape her son's diapers closed because he would pull them out through his clothes. You'd have to be super careful though, not to get any on her skin, but that's an extreme option. :-)

I am so sorry but I am cracking up! My daughter did this every night! "Mama I naked!" Tee tee would be all over the bed. We would go change her and change her bed. We laugh about it now! We duct taped her diapers. It worked. We did it at bedtime. We didn't use the crib for time outs.

Definitely had this happen! :) People would tell me my dd was ready to potty train, but just like you I had no luck. We used duct tape...we had to tape it where it ended in the back because she could undo that if it was in the front. We also put her in footed pj's inside out. She could not undo the zipper that way. I think we did finally allow her to wear pull ups with panties on top and she would not take those off although she was capable. I think she just liked the idea that she was wearing something different. She finally stopped doing it after 2 months or so and she is finally potty trained (started about two weeks before turning 3). She decided one day that she was ready to potty train and it really has been easy. She has had a few accidents but not too many. Hang in there...this too will pass!

So my daughter went through this phase as well. What worked for us was the Pampers pull-ups. They were the only ones I found that did not open like a diaper at the sides. My daughter was not able to pull it off by herself. In fact, we still use them for naps and nighttime.
Good luck!

There is a new baby product available called the "Diaper Belt" that solves this problem. It is basically a safe alternative to duct tape. It's only $4.95 and can be purchased at www.diaperbelt.com. GOOD LUCK!!!
