So What Happened?

After 36 hours of fever, I took her in to the ER. She was evening throwing up her Tylenol. Bottom line she ended up having a UTI and a viral infection. She is much better now. Thank so much for the suggestions!

Give her Aspirin, it works better that anything and go to the doctor. It's probably an ear infection.

I hope you have already acted on this. If a child has a fever like that and it is unresponsive to Tylenol/Motrin, she needs to be seen by a physician.
Good Luck

Have you called a Dr.? That would be my first choice, then go to the drug store and ask for the druggist to give some advice on bringing the fever down.

First thing Monday get to the Dr.

Good luck

Our daughter and son both had 'odd' symptoms recently and both ended up having Strep Throat! Our son had an upset tummy and fever, and our daughter was dizzy with a fever....they said the strains are different now and not always involve a sore throat. I'd take your kiddo into Acute Kids or E-Care.

These can be symptoms of an ear infection, even if she has no pain. My daughter had the same thing a couple of months ago. Take her to the doctor just to be safe... a ruptured eardrum is no fun at all!

My 20 month old son had a 102 with dizziness for 4 days last week (I could tell because he was falling down and clumsy). Because he had no other symptoms, I waited to take him to the Dr. until day 4. He had sweat out his fever right before, of course, and she said he was probably on the mend. The next day, he was coughing and had a runny nose and congestion, much like a cold. You might see the same thing happen with your daughter. Give her Tylenol to make her more comfortable in the mean time.

Definitely call your pediatrician and relay the info to the answering service. They will have a nurse call you back and let you know the best next step. Children your daughter's age don't normally run such a high fever with a cold or ear infection, so it would be good idea to check her all over to see if she has any cuts or sores, bug bites, or fingernail/toenail discoloration before you call the dr.

go to or call the doc. If she is dizzy it could be an ear infection.

My neighbor's son (5th grader) had a 103 fever for 11 days. It would spike up and down with no other symptoms. He had a viral infection (so no antibiotics) then it turned into pneumonia. I would keep her hydrated and talk to your ped. He just got better a few days ago. He was lifeless. I would keep a log so that you can show your pediatrician the cycle and if there might be a need for additional tests...

Kellilea,

When my kids have fever that high they will not respond to Tylenol, I have to give them 1 or half a pill of adult ibuprofen. It's the only thing that cuts the fever in an instant. A few hours later I give them Tylenol and follow its directions for the next 12-16 hours. If a fever last more than 24 hours it could be a bacterial infection which she will need meds for, you should take her to the clinic just to rule it out.

Be sure the fever doesn't get any higher by alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen. What concerns me is the dizziness which could mean an inner ear infection. When I had mine, my only symptoms were fever and dizziness. I would see a Dr if it remains that high with no relief from the Tyl and Ib.

You can alternate Motrin and Tylenol every three hours to keep the fever down. If it persists on Monday, call your doctor. Be sure not to give too much Tylenol (acetominophen), as it can damage the liver. Look for it in the other medicines you might give her, like cold medicine and be sure not to double-dose.

I'm sure she'll be fine and yet I know more about this topic than I ever, ever wanted to. Please contact me if the fever persists for more than a week so I can share my story with you.

God bless,

Have you given her any Motrin or Tylenol? That usually helps control the fever. My 9 year old is famous for running high fevers (104 and sometimes higher) and the Motrin seemed to work best for her. But if it continues even w/medicine they you should take her to the doctor.

Since this was posted on Saturday, I'm hoping your daughter is doing much better...

For future reference tho...don't ever give aspirin to kids for fever.

Alternate...on an every two hours schedule...Advil and Tylenol. And don't let up until she's at least 8 hours fever free.

Taking her to the doc after her being sick for only 24 hours is a waste of money.

If she were vomiting, lethargic, seemed to go in an out of consiousness, acting irratic, etc etc...then by all means...there's something more to it than just a fever...take her to the emergency room.

You have to be deligent with fevers. and jsut because they've gone 2 hours without a raised temp doesn't mean to stop giving meds.

Wishing you and your daughter well...

Hey Kellilea,

Sorry to hear about your daughter. It sounds like she may have an inner ear infection or something. You may want to take her into one of those after hours clinics or something. I hope she feels better soon!

You could call a dr. like everyone else has said but unless you want an unnecessary dr. bill I wouldn't recommend taking her unless the fever she won't break. The only thing they will do is exactly what you're doing by alternating tylenol and motrin. Believe me, been there done that. Keep her drinking lots of water so she doesn't get dehydrated. Check any cuts for infection and redness because that can cause a fever and she'll need antibiotics. Also, put her in a luke warm bath. Cold could send her into shock but a warm bath will bring the temp down. She should be fine. If it hasn't broke in a few days then you may need to schedule a dr. appointment. Also, when I was her age I ended up with a 105 degree fever and never had to see a dr. if this makes you feel better.

Call her doctor and try to get the fever down. Luke warm bath, tylenol fever reducer maybe.

Most important is to keep her hydrated and monitor her symptoms in order to relay them to her doctor, if necessary. Has she had a cold or allergies in recent weeks (considering an ear infection)? She should be okay with over the counter fever reducers (nothing containing aspirin) until Monday unless she refuses to drink liquids or unless she developes other symptoms. Sore throat with high fever could be strep or tonsilitis, which needs immediate attention and antibiotics. A temperature of 105 needs to be checked in ER. Cool bedbaths will help reduce her temperature for a time. Be aware that congestion or labored breathing with high fever should be checked. Otherwise, "...be still and wait"..."this, too, shall pass". Don't be afraid to follow your gut instinct.

hi, my almost 3 year old came down with same thing last week, it is called hand foot and mouth disease. after about 24-36 hours it went away. it is going around right now. check for mouth sores and rashes on the palms of her hands and feet. I have read about it and it goes away in 5-7 days. affects childrens usually under 10 and once they have it they can't get it again. alternate motrin and tylenol every 3-4 hours. oh and her highest fever was about 103.7. This too will pass. L.

that's on the high side for a child that old. is the fever responding to fever reducers?(tylenol or motrin) if it is, i'd probably take her to carenow or someplace like that - if it's not responding to fever reducing meds, i'd head to the ER - the fevers that don't go down when medicated are the dangerous ones. hope it's something simple, keep us updated and hope she's better soon!
