What's the Weirdest Treat You Feed/fed Your Dog?

Hi mamas. I am writing a novel which happens to have a dog in it. I want my main character to lure the dog out and down the stairs with some sort of treat, but I can't think of what. I wanted to make it funny, so bacon, steak, that kind of thing is too mundane. =)

I am a dog person, but the dog I had growing up would eat anything except lettuce. Not helpful. LOL Of course, I could use lettuce. That would be funny, but somewhat unbelievable.

So, mamas, what's the weirdest treat that your dog eats or has eaten? I really want to take it from a real life example. Thanks so much for helping me out!

EDIT: Wow, I knew dogs ate some strange stuff, but... just... wow.
And Marda? EWW!!! LOL Keep them coming ladies! I'm getting some great ideas! Thanks!

So What Happened?

I am so impressed! And disgusted! And impressed! LOL Thanks so much, mamas! I'll probably use something pretty spicy like a couple of people said. Maybe pickled jalapenos or something. Don't worry, I won't pick anything toxic to dogs. I am a dog lover myself, so I wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong idea that something toxic is actually safe for dogs. Thanks so much for all your help!

INTENTIONALLY?

My dog's absolute favorite foods are:

- Pizza crust
- Avacados (including the rind, he doesn't eat the rind, just licks the inside to death)
- Sweet Potato Skins (not the orange yams, but real sweet potatoes)

UNINTENTIONALLY
- Socks

This dog hooks his bottom fangs on the dryer door, backs up, and eats socks right out of the dryer. He treats it's like his personal snack food dispensor. Aargh! He eats 2-3 socks per week. We used to worry. 4 years later, we just buy more socks. His favorites (in order) are kids' white clean, kids' colored clean, adults' white clean, adults' colored clean... and then repeat with dirty socks. HE IS AFRAID and will not touch WOOL socks. Crazy dog.

At one point my mum was going to make a "sock spider " (by tying some socks together... at home dog toy). Mom! No! Too, late. He gulped it right down.

I've had three dogs that ate raw carrots as treats. I've used ripe bananas to get dogs to eat their pills. My current 1 year old poodle has been in the yard eating acorns lately! I've never seen a dog eat acorns before.

FYI, to dog owners--it is surprising how many human foods are toxic to dogs as many of us probably know--chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions and most recently I heard xylotol (spelling?), an artificial sweetener in sugar free gum. So it's funny to see dogs eat crazy things, but be careful!

A note added on the chocolate thing--it is not a lie or myth. Yes, it depends very much on the concentration of the chocolate and the size of the dog. Dark chocolate is much worse than milk chocolate and solid chocolate is much worse than if it's diluted in cakes or cookies. Truth is, there is a chemical in chocolate that is toxic to dogs. So it's true that one small milk chocolate won't hurt the average size dog, but I think it's safe to just stay away from chocolate and not teach the dog to like it. Our dog gets a stern "leave it" from us whenever chocolate falls on the floor. I personally know of a small dog that died from eating a bag of M&Ms and a medium sized dog that died from getting into the kids' raisins. The raisin death was quick, but the dog was violently ill. Perhaps I'm a little paranoid about it, but I like to be on the safe side! The dog that died from the raisins belonged to one of my brother's best friends. I don't think all dog owners know about that and since many have kids who like raisins I try to inform people about that one.

My dog LOVES apples. She will eat them totally whole. You just have to remove the apple seeds since they contain small amounts of cyanide and dogs will eat the seeds. Apples with peanut butter, even better. She also loves carrot sticks, and chews them as if it's a bone. Also loves, ice cubes, yogurt, bananas, avocados, pickles, cheese, meat obviously... practically anything.

Our cocker spaniel (her pup), ate the raspberries right off the bush.... which was a good thing, since it was a male that tended to lift his leg all over the lower part of the bush! We let him eat those, we ate the ones up top out of his "reach".

We just had to put our 11-year old basset hound to sleep last month because he had pancreatic cancer and he was in a lot of pain. We knew he didn't have long to live so for the last few weeks of his life we spoiled him with all kinds of special food. I fed him yogurt, peanut butter, brown rice, chicken, salmon, veggies, cottage cheese, etc. On the day that we took him to be euthanized my husband made him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and we also gave him some ice cream. Also, whenever we used to make pancakes on the weekend, we would always make an extra one or two for him. He used to get so excited when you asked him if he wanted pancakes.

Used to have a part GSD part wolf mix dog at work that loved to sniff out an m&m or two. I know now (we didn't then) that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, but it was milk chocolate and never enough to do any damage. But boy, if one of us in the office was snacking on M&M's that day, she would find us and beg. She always got 3, one at a time. If we tried to "short" her, she KNEW it and wouldn't give up.

My GSD at home doesn't eat much of anything unusual. She is not "food motivated" much, and we try not to feed her people food too often. But I have a friend who's dog LOVES Popcorn!

Pancakes. My mom would get up on Saturday mornings and make pancakes for herself and the dog. (She left the leftover batter in the fridge for my brother and I to make our own pancakes when we woke up.) When he got older, the vet insisted that she stop giving him syrup, at least. Didn't want a diabetic dog on our hands.

Diet Pepsi. My mom gave him some once just to see if he'd drink it. He did.

Salsa. (I don't know how, but he always managed to lick around the onions. Left them in a mushy pile in the bottom of the salsa bowl.)

His treat after the vet's office was to go with us throught the Whataburger drive-through, and get a justaburger with cheese and ketchup. No pickles. (My brother and I were in high school - it was our job to take him to the vet for check-ups and his semi-annual haircut. If he had to go to the vet, he preferred to go with us - for the burger.)

Come to think of it, the only people foods that dog DIDN'T like were onions and pickles.

When we were kids, my brothers and I would refuse to eat the skin on our baked potatoes, so the skin (and the little bit of potato left inside) would end up in the dog's bowl after dinner. She would go to TOWN on it. She also liked toast with butter on it. Probably would have loved muffins, too, but there were never any leftover bits of those... :)

EDIT: Just wanted to throw out there that YES, your dog can eat quite a bit of chocolate before it becomes an issue, but if you were quoted 10% of their body weight, that would be for MILK chocolate. Dark chocolate would take significantly less to make them sick. It's not a lie, it's a blanket statement that is made to protect people from accidentally taking it too far and unintentionally harming their own pets.

Chocolate...yes, that's not a typo...

And yes, too much makes her sick. One night after family party, an aunt brought a home made chocolate cake that was terrible and dry, so no one ate it and it went into the trash. We were staying on at my mom's and my dog snuck into the kitchen, tore open the trash bag ready to go out to the trash and ate the whole thing. She was very sick with vomiting, diarhea, shaking. So I took her to a VET and asked him to educate me about why chocolate is so bad for dogs. Because with kids and Easter baskets, she is bound to steal chocolate again and again.

So, the fact is, the whole chocolate scare with dogs is if a dog eats 10% of it's body weight in chocolate, then that is when it's bad for them and should be brought to a VET ASAP.

Really? I responded..well IF I ate 10% of MY own body weight in chocolate I'd be sick and need a doctor too..and a toilet.

SHEESH, the lies that get forwarded as truths amongst us is shocking.

So, I give my dog one little chocolate candy once in a while...and she loves me for it.

L., I am way late on this one but I had to chime in. I have a 9 year old dachsund mutt named Susie (her nickname is Freakshow but that's another story). Susie is a goat. She too, eats everything except lettuce. Although if the lettuce has dressing on it, she'll eat that too. She loves all the normal dog things but in addition, she goes absolutely WILD for celery. She loves celery so much that when she hears me open the produce drawer, she comes running. She will see scallions or leeks and think they're celery and start prancing around. Of course I don't give her those things! We have a 2 1/2 yo Golden Retriever who is a more usual dog - likes dog things and usual people food dogs love like peanut butter and meat. But because the Golden is younger, she has learned all the important life lessons from Susie. So now Simma goes nuts for celery too. But she always has a look on her face like why do we like this so much? OK I guess I'll go along with it.
I usually buy them an extra bag from the store. It's an inexpensive, nice treat to give them and not unhealthy.
