I will include a bottle of their favorite champagne but would
like ideas of something to add.

What gifts were you given, if any?

What do you give to a newly engaged couple?

They are young (22). They rent a cottage on the property of one of their grandparents' home.

TIA

A nice set of champagne flutes to go with the bottle?

I've never given an engagement gift. Wedding, yes. Housewarming, sure. Engagement...no. If I did, I think it would be something very simple.

I never knew there was such a thing.
I really do not think it is necessary.
I mean, what is the difference between that and wedding gifts?
Did that couple actually SET a wedding date yet???
Some couples are engaged, for YEARS and years....

When we were engaged, me/my now Husband, never got anything from anyone.
But we got wedding gifts.

A nice frame in which you send them their engagement announcement.
A gift of cash towards their church/ wedding fees.
A gift of tickets/ gift certificate to a restaurant. with a note saying something like I know how hectic wedding planning can become, here's a chance to take a break.

Good luck to you, yours, and the young couple.

Are we talking about an engagement gift or a wedding gift?

Because for my bridal shower and wedding, I registered for gifts at 2 different stores and for the most part, got what I registered for. I didn't get any "engagement" gifts.

If it's not a bridal shower/wedding gift, you could consider a nice picture frame, or a gift card to a store like Target or Best Buy where they can pick something out themselves.

If it is for a bridal shower or wedding, and they are registered somewhere, I would just get something off the registry list.

We got a rice cooker and a picture frame...o and some white towels.

Scented candles might be nice.

Engagement gifts aren't a big thing around here...mostly shower and wedding gifts

For the wedding or shower, I would get something they registered for, but an engagement calls for a smaller gift (if one at all). Many have engagement parties and specifically ask for no gifts. My best friend got engaged and I gave them very beautiful mug in black and white (one said Mrs. and the other said Mr. from Hallmark). I just saw this idea on pinterest today from the Dating Divas. You can adjust the Monetary amount to fit your budget, and I think it would be very appropriate for a young couple! Check it out, it is super cute!

A friend of ours got engaged in Paris.. so we made a basket consisting of french items such as a french music cd, champagne, candles, a small sparkly statue of the Eiffel Tower, french chocolates.. and french little booklet of french love poems...

not sure what the couple is like.. but you could add champagne glasses and edible items they may like.. OR another gift I have given is a gift ctf to a b/b..... Santa Monica or nearby must have some gorgeous ones..

What is your relationship with them? Are they planning a long engagement... or is the wedding already booked?

One of the only things I liked about my ex-MIL is that she would wait until I had picked something out and then she would pay for it. That way she wasn't inserting what "she" wanted or adding "strings".

She did that for our engagement - she went with me to *shop* for my shoes. When I had found the pair that I loved, she just took the box and went up and paid for them. I thought that was really nice.

She also did that when I was pregnant. My ex and I were shopping with her at Babies R Us. We had picked out several pricey items - it was the *big* trip - stroller, carseat, etc. once we had made decisions and were on our way up - she just picked out the items she was willing to buy.

It TOTALLY took the pressure off. We didn't have to come up with *what* we wanted her to buy and then not give that item to anyone else. And we didn't have to worry about picking out something I thought SHE would like... because I didn't even know she was going to buy stuff!!!!!

It also depends on what you are going to spend.

So, if you know her well..... maybe go shopping with her?
