What the BEEZ!

I am seriously allergic to Wasps.

When we moved into our house my Brother in Law had told us they had to spray for them, but it looked like the spray took care of the issue. This was last summer.

We have had the coldest Spring/Summer I can remember here. So we have not had nearly the outside time as we normally would.

Since August we have had pretty nice weather.

And now the Bee's are going crazy.

We have had to cut one, soon to be two bushes out, because we have a hive in each of them. There was a hive started on the back side of our house we knocked down....and my oldest kiddo came freaking out, because we have a clear bird feeder and inside the feeder we have a nest being built.

WHY DO THEY SEEM TO LOVE OUR HOUSE? I have asked around and no one else seems to be having this issue.

If I get stung I have to go to the ER. I dont have any of the Epinephrine shots here on hand(I cant afford to go see the specialist my doc wants me to see before she will write a script for me to have them on hand). So having so many around my yard is scary.

Is there something I am missing...Am I maybe unknowingly inviting them to live here??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I dont not do to much gardening...I have no real flower beds this year...So I think the fact I am not constantly touching stuff back there I invite them even more.
Leigh R.-I have a long drawn out explanation on why she needs me to see a specialist first.

I am going to go to the Pharmacy right now to see about a sting kit.

Thank you guys! As I sit here typing I have trapped one of the ones with the long bodies and big stinger in my window between it and the screen. It is better to have it there where it will die. I have just told everyone NOT to open the window.

I second 8kidsdad's suggestion about the wasp spray you spray from about 15 feet away. Do it at night when they're dormant as well, and you usually won't have a problem. We have a lot of eaves, a pitched porch roof, 2 story deck, etc. that they seem to love. Something about the wood, crevices or something. That spray does the trick though, and it's great when the nest is started way up high. The last thing my husband or I want is to be on the really tall ladder with an angry nest of wasps bearing down on us!

Home Depot sells a wasp spray you can spray from 10 to 20 feet away. Use that. If you see a nest being built, spray that and it will stop the nest being built. They make wasp traps that wasps seem to love. Once they are in they can't find their way out.

Good luck to you and yours.

Huge red flag here and it's not the bees. It's the lack of epi-pens.

You have kids. They need you to stay alive. Please do whatever it takes to get a prescription now for epi-pens. Why does the doctor insist you see a specialist for this?! I'd bet it's a requirement from the insurance company -- though I wonder if you have insurance, if you can't afford the specialist (If you have insurance, that should pay for the specialist if your primary care doctor refers you to a specialist). I would go and sit on the doctor's doorstep right now until you get an answer and a prescription. You also can fight with the insurance company if one is involved but by then you could be stung. This is a potentially fatal allergy; get to the ER too late and frankly your kids might not have a mom. Please don't let a stubborn, stupid doctor or ignorant insurance company get between you and a supply of epi-pens.

I am also violently allergic to bee stings, but here's the thing. Most bees are not aggressive. If you leave them alone (and don't walk around without your shoes on), you will be okay. I do always have my epi-pen nearby, just in case, but honestly in the past 20 years I haven't been stung once. I'm an avid gardener, and I do tend to plant "hummingbird gardens" which do also attract bees. There aren't enough bees to go around right now (I think 75% of them in the US have died recently due to some kind of bee virus), so just let them be, if you can? The bees that are nesting in your shrubs, why not just call a local bee keeper? They can usually safely remove hives from trees and shrubs and relocate them to where they can do some good (pollinating crops, etc). Hives on building walls are trickier to remove safely.

Anyhow, I would maybe think about switching doctors if your doctor won't give you an Rx for an epi-pen (I mean, seriously?! Going to the ER is crazy expensive AND waiting for treatment can be dangerous! I'd be all over my doctor about this if I were you!). You can also keep plenty of liquid Benadryl on hand, as that will help if you don't have an epi-pen. But just wear shoes when you're outside, and pay attention to where the bees are. They will not come after you. They're really very mellow in my experience.

Go see your pharmacist, they have lots of sting kits available/snake kits too. Or maybe at a camping store like Big 5.
The season is short, they'll be gone before you know it. But get rid of any pollen producing foliage in your yard and water.... they are attracted to both.

Change Dr's and forward medical records over. You serouisly should not have to see a specialist for a epi-pen.
