Hi Mamas! I have a 10 yr old that is going thru puberty :o(....she has long underarm hair and is a little embarrassed to wear a bathing suit b/c of it. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what kind of razor to get her since she has never shaved before? Any ideas are much appreciated! Thx!

What can I do next?

My daughter started off with an electric razor also but now she uses a venus and she really likes it. She has been shaving for about a year now with not a single issue;-)

I would do the Schick Intuition...no need to mess around with soap or shaving creme. They basically have that bar of slippery soapy stuff surrounding the entire razor head just for that purpose.

The Venus razors are smaller heads (the soap product part) but also have a slippery product on them. All of this just means one less product to fuss with (shaving cream).

My now 16 year old has been using the Schick Intuition one (its the one I use as well)..more expensive, but we get the big multi-packs at Sams Club..definately a better bargain. And don't leave it sit in the shower in between uses..it can be uses a few times for sure, but if left in the shower, the soapy part degrades just sitting in the other shower-fall water. I remove mine from the shower stall so it dries out a bit in between uses.

The venus razors are awesome! I have the divine, which has 5 blades and does an awesome job. It's thick, and on a hinge, so I have never even nicked myself.

I advise against using nair or anything like that though.... the chemicals are definitely NOT something you want soaking into your daughter's system... Plus, when I was about 13 my dad didn't want me to shave, so he let me use nair. I used it for a couple of months with no issues, then one day it just PEELED a strip of skin off from my kneecap to my ankle. I still have the scar!

Just a simple 2 blade razor. She might find something like a Venus easier to handle, but I don't think my mom did anything fancy with me. Just get some shaving cream.

If you want a women's razor the Venus ones are nice. I would skip the electric, unless that is what she wants. I had one and it really didn't do a very good job, I'm sure there are others out that work great. My favorite razors have always been men's razors, they work great and give a close shave. I currently use either a gilette fushion or a mach 3 that is an old one. They are meant for close shaves of the face, so I figure they are pretty good for underarms and legs too :)

My daughter started out with a Gillette Sensor ( I think that's the name.) It has these little guard wires across the blades so it makes it really hard to cut yourself. They give a good close shave but protect you from pushing too hard and cutting the skin. They were awesome.
Good luck! :)

What about hte Veet 'razor'? I understand that is more the depilitory (Sp?) cream doing the work, but it will get her used to how the process works without the painful knicks that even the best razors can't always avoid! Good luck...not looking forward to these things when I get there. :o)

if just for underarm, you can't go too wrong with a simple two blade. I grabbed my SIL bic and hacked my shin bone (to this day I wax my shin and knees - such a chicken).
If she is going to graduate with this same razor to her legs soon, maybe one with a little wider handle for more control!
Best of luck (to you both!)

I second the Schick Intuition...although I use it every day but had to look up on line what it is called! :) I like not having to use soap or shave gel, and this one also has the bands over the blades. It may not be the closest shave on the planet, but it makes it easier to do it more often. Just warn her about her shins, no matter what razor you all choose - I STILL get nauseated remembering one of my first attempts that removed most of the skin along one shin bone....oh the blood and the pain and the scars... :O

I got my daughter a Venus, but not the fancy kind with replaceable heads, just the throw-away type. She's 10 also & we got it for her for the same reason. She hasn't had any problems with it so far.

I swear by Gillette's Venus line of razors -- and of course have introduced my two older daughters to them. And the disposables are great . . . I think they do a better job than the Venus with the replacable head!

I gave mine the same kind I use. I believe it's Noxema disposable, with 2 or 3 blades in it. But if you have a kind that you like, get the same for your daughter.
Make sure to teach her the do's and don'ts of shaving. And get her a nice (women's) shaving cream, too, it makes it all go easier.
