Hi M.

My father in law was the head of the safety department for GM and still testifies in their lawsuits on safety issues. I know he has told me all US vehicles all have to meet a certain level for crashes and are up to par on their saftey equipment, he said the next step is to make sure you have done all you can for yourself and your kids in the car, I mean lets face it, you can have the safetest SUV and it won't mean squat if your car seat isn't properly installed. The first thing is infant car seats, make sure you don't face them forward until 1 year old and 20 pounds since their body is still brittle. Also your car seat should be level and very snug with no more than an inch of moving room, Latches work best if you have a newer car. When it comes to toddle and forward facing seats the worst to use are the seats with the bar that goes in front of them and locks into place. kids are more likely to be injured in a frontal crash from that big plastic bar, a 5 point harness is best and once again should be very snug with the plastic clip lined up with their armpits.
As far as booster seats they shouldn't be used until at least 4ft tall and 40 pounds, my father in law told me they were a waste of time unless they attach to your latch system, in a frontal crash that booster will slide right out underneath them and will end up with a neck injury from the seat belt. Now there is another neat feature in GM vehicles for older kids, there is a clip attached the the side of the rear seats that you slide the seat belt into and it brings the seat belt down under their necks so the belt isnt too high.
If you can get your seats check by a police officer I recommend it, it is definatley our responsibility to do all we can to keep our kids safe. Good luck

Hi M.~
I can't speak for everybody, but I know I would feel better if you got that answer from a professional source. Of course, we all have our favorites and have hopefully done the research (as my hubby and I did before buying our SUV) but personally I wouldn't feel comfortable offering safety advice since I am not trained in studying vehicle safety. Try an impartial source such as Consumer Reports. You do have to pay a small membership fee but its WELL worth it! Through Consumer Reports, we discoverd that the Land Rover model we were considering was the absolute worst on the market!! Thank God we looked!
Good luck car shopping!

M. I have heard BMW has the safest, but I am unsure. My hubby is an engineer for GM I will ask him and let you know.

Everyone has their preferences I'm sure but for being American, and made in Michigan and having the options and seating that we wanted we went with a Saturn Outlook. The Saturns have come a long ways from the days of shopping cart resistant panels. I have had this for about 4 months now and still love to drive it. It has cubbies everywhere, room for 8 comfortably, decent gas mileage (17 is the lowest so far) and is getting all kinds of rave reviews now. It also has front and side airbags, 5 star crash test rating and comes with a free year of onstar safe and sound which will notify police/emergency immediately if the airbags go off. They even email me diagnostics monthly on how my Outlook is performing, tell me what my oil life is and tire pressure on each tire. It's quit amazing. Resale value is great on them too-but we just lease.
Here is a couple of links to articles...definately worth checking out. Find a dealer near you that has "Summit Awards" to their credit. It has been nothing but positive dealing with the dealership-and anytime I'm in the area they wash it for me for free! At 8 months pregnant you can't beat that.
The Saturns also qualify for the GM discounts and you can use some GM points for purchase on them too-I think you have to have the platinum card.
The Outlook is the same platform as the newly released GMC Acadia and the Buick Enclave at a fraction of the price. You can get more options for less and frankly we looked at all 3 and I prefer the look of the Outlook.
