My son is turning 6 and since he is always on my phone playing games, I was thinking of getting his own for christmas. I was thinking the ipad for kids that has 8g from Toys R Us runs $149 but not sure if that is enough memory. I dont really want the game player that you just have to keep buying more games for that is why I like the ipad idea for the apps. Any other ideas?

ipod touch. Right now since they just came out with the 5th generation you can get the 4th gen 16 gig for 199.99 which a year ago i bought the 4th gen 8 gig for this so the price has gone down for a bigger gig. This is what my daughter will be 6 on dec 16th is getting along with a great case. If you go otterbox do the defender and not the commuter. My sons commuter case has actually broken and all that is left is the silicone case. We are going with the griffin survivor case for both.

iPod Touch. Best gift ever.

My boys both have the 8 gig version and when they need more space, I tell them to remove a game they aren't playing lately from the device. We still have it and can re-install it from the cloud any time.

Be sure to get a really good case (like an Otterbox Defender).

The App Store has LOADS of free games. Plus Netflix and lots more.

An iPad is perfect... but there isn't one that costs $149. You're talking about a knock off from another brand, right? If yes - don't do it. Spend the money to get a real Apple iPad or Apple iPod touch. I just checked and Toys R Us has an iPod Touch with 8 gb of memory for $189. They don't carry iPads. 8 gb is an acceptable amount of memory for games. It might be enough if your son wants to have movies and music on there too, but it would be tight.

My five year olds have the iPod touches and they're great for mobile games.

My son loves his Leapster explorer. He has had it for 2 yrs now and I think they have come out with an updated version of it as well. Expensive but a well rounded fun educational toy!!

We are contemplating buying a NetBook of some sort so that they can actually "game" on it at some point.

If we go with a pad, tech hubby says the nexus. My kids love our iPad, but the androids have lots of great free apps.
