I just had my second daughter on Jan 16th and I ended up getting pregnant while I was on the pill. Bella is my little bundle of happiness but I don't want to get pregnant again while being on the pill. I do however, want to have another baby in a year or two....what should I do? I have asked one of my other friends and she suggested Natural Family Planning but I have heard that it doesn't work. Any suggestions??

What can I do next?

I'm a single mom who has sworn off guys, lol, so I'm using good ol' abstinence at the moment! A lot of girls at work have the shot, though and they love it, two of which have gotten off it and got pregnant within two-three months. They swear by it, if I ever decide to have sex again, I will definitely look into it!

I have the 10 year IUD. Works great! I have had it for about 8 years now.

I, personally, like the IUD (IntraUterine Device - Mirena). You can keep it in for up to 5 years, and it easiest to insert post-partum (which is done right in your OB office). It can be removed when you want another baby. You can choose from a non-hormonal or a hormone releasing IUD. Please, read more about it: http://mirena-us.com

After my daughter was born my gyn. suggested the Mirena or I think some call it the IUD. It is inserted and lasts for 5 years. It is 99% effective also. I did get this and I like it because I don't have to worry about remembering to take a pill or anything like that. If you did get this and wanted another child they simply take it out and you can get it replaced after the baby. I would def. recommend it to you and ask your doctor about it if you are interested and he/she could probably give you more info.

I personally love the Depo injection. I don't have a period & I have a calendar on my computer to remember when it's due again. I was on it after my son was born & went off it in Nov. We were pregnant again (on purpose) by March. However, My doctor did tell me that it could take up to a year to get regular cycles again & to get pregnant.

I would recomend an IUD. They can stay in up to 5 years and if you want to get pregnant before that then you can have it taken out whenever you want. You can also get pregnant right after it is taken out, there is no "wait" period like there is with the pill. The other good thing is that most people don't even have a period after the first 6 months to a year. Good luck

For some people, natural family planning does work. You have to have a regular period, and know your cycle exactly for it to work. My mom had 4 kids and a miscarriage, (they wanted 6!) All of us were planned and they got pregnant the month that they wanted to, all without any pill. Unfortantely she ended up with colon cancer at a very young age of 31 and the treatment for that killed everything else. So it does work, you just can't have any oops's at all.

Unless you are a very organized and disciplined person, don't bother with Natural Family Planning. Yes it does work and it works extraordinarily well for some people - people who are METICULOUS about charting their very regular cycles and are in touch with their body's changes at various points in the month (cervical mucus changes, basal body temperature charting, etc.). I'm not knocking NFP by any means, I'm just saying that it is for someone who is willing to be very, very vigilant not to mention someone who can resist temptation or moments of "just this once".

The NuvaRing might possibly be your best bet. It has the same hormones as BCPs without the daily task of remembering to take it. Fold the ring in half, push it in, leave it there for 3 weeks - ta da! Covered for a month and you shouldn't even feel it.

An IUD would also be a good option, but keep in mind that there is a low (very, very low but possible) incidence of potential scar tissue associated with using an IUD. This doesn't happen very often at all, but if you are wanting to have another child you may not wish to take this risk, albeit it very minimal.

The Depo shot works wonders! You can use it while breastfeeding (if you still are). You only have to go about every three months to get it and the best part your periods usually stop! It works like getting your tubes tied but without being permanent. This was the best choice for me because I couldnt always remember the pill at the same time!

Hi A.:
I too have tried so many birth controls like the pill and I also got prgnant on it. Depo was awful for me and so was the patch. My doctor suggested an IUD. I LOVE IT. It lasts for 5 or 10 years but you can have it removed at any time. With the IUD you could be pregnant in the first month after removal, unlike the pill which can take up to 6 months. And because it's in your uterus you dont have to worry everyday "did I take my pill, or is this the mont for my shot". There are little or no side effects with this type of birth control also. You can search IUD on the internet to get more info if you are interested. ~~Good Luck

Hello A.,
Personally, I am a fan of my Nuva Ring. It's a great once a month birth control. It's a vaginal ring, so on the first day of your period you insert, leave in place for three weeks, and then take out for a week. You'll repeat this pattern with a new ring when that week is up. It's very convenient as you don't have to worry about taking a pill everyday, ect. When you fill the prescreption, they will give you stickers for your calendar to help you remember. You can also download a timer for your computer if that's more convenient for you!
You can keep the ring out for up to three hours a day, safely. You can't feel it, and my husband says he can't either! So I pretty much never take mine out. Only to rinse it in the shower. Tampon use won't affect it, so that's safe also. I love my ring. :)
If you want to learn more about it, there's www.nuvaring.com

Good luck!

I am actually trying to find a form of birth control that is non-chemical but effective, I had the Mirena IUD and did not like it! I had spotting all the time even after the first few months that they tell you to expect it I had bad mood swings and several other negative side effects. I am sure it affects everyone different but I just wanted to let you know that it is not for everyone because it seemed like alot of people were recomending it to you.

I would also recomment the IUD as you can have it in for 3-5 years depending on which kind you get, and you can have it taken out at any time. I had mine for quite a while and didnt even feel it was there, I have gotten pregnant on every for of birthcontrol except the IUD. I would ask your doctor about it and see if that is something for you

Honestly, I have tried many different methods of birth control, and now I have the Mirena and it's excellent. It is the most effective birth control out there. The only down falls is that it was a bit uncomfortable when they put it in and for the next few months you do a bit of spotting. But it is worth it, and once the spotting is over you don't really get any periods anymore. Which is a lovely thing. There is no maintenance, except after 5 years you have to get it taken out. And in the meantime, if you decide to have another child, you just get it taken out and right away you can get pregnant again.
