Hi, last night my 3 year old knocked out one of his upper front teeth...he already knocked another one out when he was just one year old. Well, we called a dentist and got told that there is no need to be seen with him. Even though my son got checked thoroughly when it happened the first time I do trust that at this point nothing really can be done. However I am a little concerned about things to come in the future....does anybody had that happen and has some input if knocking out a tooth has an impact on the development from this point on? I could wait till monday and consult the dentist again but can not wait that long to vent my concerns. And afterall: Mom's know best....just me beeing a little clueless right now.....:0)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everybody who responded to my request. It is always soo comforting to know that other people experience simmilar or the same things and therefore care. Well, the pain (we all felt..:0)) is subsiding and I guess we will have little one checked by a dentist again and other than that see what will happen.....thanks again!!!!

My son knocked out his front tooth at 18 months. He already had a big space between them so he looked toothless. When his other tooth came out at 6 the permanent tooth was right there. It took almost another year before his knocked out tooth came in. It came in slightly forward and stright but has a small calcium spot. The dentist has suggested a cap or veneer but he's 14 now and it's barely noticable. He also sucked on a pacifier until 4! His teeth are perfect otherwise. No braces or cavities.

My son had an accident at school which resulted in one knocked out baby tooth, two baby teeth needing extraction, and 7 stitches. Two of the teeth were his two front teeth. Both have since come in (last year when he was 6) and they look fine. The tooth on the side of the two front teeth hasn't dropped down yet, but it doesn't concern me because he just recently lost the one on the other side of the front teeth and so he has matching gaps. I wouldn't worry too much. This seems to happen to a lot of kids. I would go to the dentist. They can do xrays to check on the permanent teeth.

Is your son missing both of his front teeth now? If so, I am surprised your dentist isn't recommending two false teeth to hold the places for his permanent teeth. This same thing happened to my daughter when she was three... and they were concerned for her speech development. She got the two false teeth (kind of like a retainer) and the piece was wired to her two back teeth. They removed the piece once her two bottom teeth were lose and ready to fall out in Kindergarten because it wouldn't be much longer after that for the two top teeth to be ready to come in too.
My biggest concern was the future development of her permanent teeth... room for them to come in, and whether they'd been damaged when she fell because she shoved one of the baby teeth up and in a bit. My other concern was her speech development and over all I'm glad we had the false teeth for the three years in between.
Good luck to you and your son!

Your dentist is probably right, especially if there was no real damage to your son's mouth. My youngest took a spill when he was 7 and knocked out his top 2 teeth. It was bad!! He was riding his bike down the same hill he took daily but this time(without his helmet), he hit a rock and flipped over the handle bars. Blood was everywhere and he did hit his head. But there was no permanent damage. Two top teeth were pushed to the back and barely haning on when we took him to ER they did xrays to ensure his head was fine and to make sure there was no real damage. Because those were baby teeth the dentist said he would be fine. He's nine, and now has his permanent teeth in and has had no problems. In fact after the accident his main concern was if he was going to be scarred forever but there is just a tiny scar above his lip that seems to get smaller every year. Needless to say he doesn't ride without his helmet anymore. So at three I would think your son is going to be fine as well especially if there was no major trauma to his face or mouth.

Well....about 3 weeks ago my daughter in law and my son were visiting me with the grandkids. One girl of 5 and my grandson who is 18 mo. and a wild little runner. I asked my son to slow him down since I have rugs he could trip over and hurt himself in the process. I no sooner said that and the little guy tripped ....fell against my coffee table and knocked his 2 front teeth .....root and all....right out of his mouth. He swallowed one....we think....cause we didn't find it......and the other I put in a baggy with some saline solution and send them off to the ER at St.Josephs hosp. They waited there for 5 hrs only to hear that they could not do anything about it and wait a while untill the wound heals so his dentist could put in a spacer with some fake teeth so he wouldn't look so awkward and it will help straighten his adult teeth when they grow in. Other than that he said we should be happy that it wasn't his permanent teeth that were knocked out.
My daughter in law is the head nurse at St Josephs pediatric hosp. but she was clueless when it came to his teeth. She was mainly worried about the lost tooth. Did he jam it into his gums? or what happened to it.
So I wouldn't worry too much about it...your little guy will be fine.

You said you came from Germany. My husband was born in Bochum Germany and me in Holland. Where are you from.

My son was 11 months when he knocked out his front tooth. He is now 44 yrs. old. It came back at about 6 or 7 and had no problems. They came in straight and in the right place. So it should be ok. M. In Tampa.
