In my Girl Scout troop they earning a try it patch for their vest and this one is about families. The girl scout handbook is just okay in my opinion. Sometimes I prefer to do other activities that center on the theme instead. The girls are in 3rd grade so they are becoming pretty independent when it comes to creating, building, making crafts.
So... my question is.... if your child made you something that centered around her/your family, what would you like enough to keep it for years to come? I thought of them writing a book about each family member but they've done enough writing about their families in their K-2nd grade classrooms. (The craft can only cost approx. $2 to $3 PER child.)
They've already written love notes for each family member as well as made a family coupon book.
The craft project would be intended for the ENTIRE family and not just say for you, the mom. I've done a Google search and nothing comes up specifically for this project. So I need help tweaking some ideas to make the project for everyone in the family.
I was thinking of painting terrra cotta (sp?) pots and then making flowers to from pipe cleaners and tissue paper and then puttting a photo of each family member in the middle of the flower. I think moms would like to display this at home. What message could they paint on their pots? Something with the word BLOOMS in it??
We've made photo frames for other try it patches so I really don't want to make another one ......

Their handprints. I recently found mine my mom molded of mine when I was very small. I wish I would have done that with my girls.
when I started reading your question, my very 1st thought was: family tree. The Martha Stewart website has lots of good printables for this....or just as a springboard for the girls. Better Homes & Gardens has a scrapbooking link which also has excellent ideas.
My youngest son made a Family Tree as a class project....maybe 3rd or 4th grade. I still have it, & it wasn't until it came back graded that I realized that....eerie!.....the black & white photos/copies were of deceased family members......& the color photos were of the living. Still kinda freaks me! BUT I absolutely love it....I consider it a "treasure". .....Have Fun!!
My in-laws have a wooden plaque by their front door, it has their last name and the year they got married. My husband made when he was little, but it still looks nice 30 years later. My parents have a similar plaque that they hang above their porch, but I didn't make it. I think that's something most families could make use of. The one my husband made has the letters carved out with a wood burning tool, and my parents' has raised letters that I think are glued on - that would be easier for the kids to do without too much help.
What about they paint a picture of their family and you could have them framed? I'd like that. And I never got O. of those little plaster hand plaques either! Wish I had that.
As for the terracotta pot saying "Love blooms here."?

Or, what about a quilt...? Using old/out grown kids clothing etc., and sew it together? That wouldn't cost much.... except for sewing machine thread etc.
It can be just a SMALL blanket size. So it is not as arduous to make...
Or, writing on paper, a "poem" on what the love about their family? Then frame it?
Because the main thing too, is that you only spend $2-3 dollars on it, right? So it has to be something that does not cost a lot in supplies... thus you have to have most of the supplies already on hand. Or recycled things.... from around the house.
I have a picture my oldest son drew of "his family". It's a keeper. Forever.
Perhaps, given their ages, they could do a small painting?
When my daughter (now 16) was in preschool, they did handprints accompanied with a special poem. It is framed on the wall and SO special. I see it everytime I go to her room and remember the special times we also enjoyed when she was so little.
I love the family tree idea. Why not use real leaves. Get a square of heavy duty egg shell colored paper. Or make your own recycled paper. Super easy, but sorta messy. Have the girls collect and press green tree leaves. Then glue the leaves to the paper and paint the brown tree that the leaves are attached to. Or you can print a tree trunk off the internet and glue it on. Glue small photos onto the leaves. Dollar Store Frame and voila.
What about a photo book or a small scrap book?
