What Do You Think of IKEA Furniture?

Ok...I've heard a lot of people rave about IKEA and how great the stuff is. Haven't actually been to the store yet although I plan to. I'm in the market for a new couch-cheap but well put together. I found a sectional at IKEA for like $800 that is also a sleeper sofa and so I like all the details of it...just want to know if it's too good to be true kind of thing. I have two young kids and would like the furniture to last awhile you know. Does anyone have any of the IKEA furniture or know anything about them?

THanks-

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the info! We will for sure go and check them out just to see how sturdy they are but will also probably go to Rooms to go or some place like that. I want something that will last for awhile and not show a lot (kids!)

My son uses my old Ikea dresser as a dresser/changing table, I've had it for close to 10 years now and it's still in great condition.... even after 7 moves, lol. No signs of wear!

My only caution is regarding fabric couches with kids..... they can get soiled pretty easily. You would likely have to get some kind of fabric protector guard on it. We have a leather couch and LOVE that you just wipe it off when something spills.

We have the Ektorp sofa and chair from Ikea and like them because the slip covers fit well (not one big piece that goes over everything and doesn't fit well, and not difficult to put on) and they can be taken off and washed at home pretty easily. However, you must be VERY careful removing the large cover which covers the couch (as opposed to the pillow/cushion cases) because if the thing fabric which goes over the seat is caught on the velcro it'll rip (this part isn't visible when you've got the bottom cushion on, but still...). Reading back through that it doesn't make much sense, but if you get one you'll know what I'm talking about. :)

Overall, we're happy with them. We bought them only because we wanted something simple, inexpensive and easy to maintain while our children are young and messy. We have a few other pieces, all of which I've been able to put together myself with only a few curse words. :)

Their furniture is give and take. If it's stationary furniture that's going to stay in one place and doesn't get a lot of heavy use, then it's great. If the items will get a lot of use, then they show their age quickly and may not be worth it in the long run depending on how often you might have to replace it.

I purchased a sleeper sofa/couch which is used in our game room. It has a really cool concept which was my primary reason for the purchase. The downside is that the material is foam and the fabric is cotton/poly. Sitting on the couch continuously (and within in a brief time - within 2 months) caused the foam to lose it's elasticity and there is now a slight sag. Also, the fabric is beginning to wear and you can see where it has been used the most.

If you are looking for sectional that will be used on a daily basis by the entire family, I would honestly look elsewhere. Next to Ikea in Frisco, there is a Rooms to Go, Robb and Stuckey (higher priced), and I think Ashley Furniture. There is also a Eurway and like Ikea, it's trendy/modern, but furniture quality is the same.

No matter what furniture store you do decide on, make sure you know what the materials are and how it's made before you buy.

We bought 2 barstools from IKEA and they were broken within 2 weeks. They did exchange them for us, however the new ones that we were given were broken after 2 months. I would say that they are great for accessories, accents, but for furniture that you're actually going to use.... I'd check out the quality really carefully before investing.

We purchased a sideboard to use as a large tv stand about a year ago, and it is still in great condition.

I think a lot of the heavier wood items hold up well, but I'm not sure about the couches. I had one friend with an Ikea couch that looked great after about a year, and another friend who had an Ikea couch that looked like it belonged in a garage sale.

I think it really depends on which one you get, and how dense and durable the slipcover is. They seem to be really small too, but that's just my opinion.

There are a lot of great couches out there for way less than $800 at the RoomStore or Rooms to GO.

My daughter's bedroom is Ikea and it works great but I don't expect it to last more than a few years and I'm not sure it will look so nice after a move.

Can't speak for couches, but my twins' beds came from IKEA and so far, so good. I chose this route because I wanted to save the "big" furniture purchase for when they are older and can help decide what they like. Right now, being two, they don't care that they sleep on a bed that daddy had to put together out of a box LOL

I love ikea. It makes decorating affordable. This being said you do have to be careful which pieces you purchase. Some are sturdier than others. We've not purchased couches from there, but have end tables, coffee tables, a book shelf and entertainment unit. We get many compliments when people come over. Also make sure you check out what you've purchased before you drive all the way home. We've made it home more than a few times missing important pieces or having damaged pieces. They are very helpful fixing the problems but it's nice to avoid the drive back. I hope this was helpful!

Our 12 year old daughter's entire room is Ikea furniture. This includes a small couch. So far it seems to be holding up well. The slipcover fits beautifully but we didn't have too much trouble taking it off to wash it & putting it back on.
I am not sure about living room furniture. It is worth a try to look, though. Might save you some $$$.

We bought a leather loveseat from IKEA on Christmas Eve in their "scratch and dent" section. It's in our office and gets used everyday. I sit on it for at least 4 hours everyday while I do data-entry and it's very comfortable! I don't remember which style it is, but we're very happy with it.

I would love to hear advice from people that have bought from ikea as well. I just went there for the first time last Saturday and had a ball. My daughter is turning 2 on Friday and I am buying her a furniture set there this week. It looks sturdy and if she colors on it or whatever it will just wipe right off. The beds are really low to the ground also.
They had some really cute sofa's but as far as how sturdy they are i'm not real sure. Might want to go online and see what they are made out of and all of that. I hope you get some good advice.
Good Luck
P.S. The prices are really reasonable so even if it only lasted a couple of years while your kids are young you could always afford another one later.
