What Do You Pay Your Nannies?

I was hoping that I could get an idea on what to pay a nanny that would be coming to our house every day. I have three children. One will be in elementary school and home in the late afternoons. One will be in preschool for the mornings and at home in the afternoons. And one (3 year old) will be at home the entire day. Please any advice on how to figure out payment would be so helpful. Thanks!

$420/week or $10.50/hour for 40 hours/week. $10/hour for any hours over 40, and babysitting is also $10/hour.

My most recent nanny position was the same situation except the youngest was 2 yr old. I was paid $14/hour and they withheld taxes and paid the employer's contribution to social security, medicare and they paid unemployment taxes also. That is the only legal way to hire a nanny! A great resource is www.4nannytaxes.com.

In Baltimore, the going rate for a nanny is $11-$15 per hour.

Don't forget the nanny should also have paid vacation (abt 2 wks), 3-5 personal/sick days and paid holidays (whatever holidays you're off with pay, they should be as well).

I was a nanny for a few years during college (about 3 years ago) for 2 children. Sometimes I had both, and sometimes just one while the other was in school. How much work will this nanny be doing? Will she be responsible for picking up/dropping off children at school, playdates, activities, etc? Will she be responsible for dishes, laundry, cooking & light cleaning? I would say that my experience would be that if they are NOT responsible for any of these things pay would be around $12/hr. If they ARE, starting wages would probably be around $15/hr or more. Or you could work out a daily or weekly rate. I often was there for overnights (going along on vacations or while parents went away by themselves) and was paid around $150/day for those days.

Although you asked about a nanny I wanted to share information on live-in child care. Au pairs are paid about $330.00 per week. This is per family, NOT per child. They can drive, prepare meals, drive, and do light housekeeping for your children. Au pairs are between 18 & 26 yr. old, come from all over the globe, and the agency will do background and criminal checks. Best of all, since they live with you they will come to love your family and you will benefit from a cultural exchange as well!! I would love to give you more information.

I'm a part-time nanny (I work 20 hours a week). I watch a two year-old girl at her house and I get $12 an hour. I will be getting $15 an hour after they have their second baby. I am very active with her and have taught her many things. I'm not just a "babysitter" (the title "nanny" implies more than just watching, therefore more $$ is expected). ...just to give you an idea
