I have severe chronic insomnia. I have been on prescription medications, but went off them to get pregnant. Does anyone know how I might be able to sleep but not take something that would hurt an unborn baby?

What can I do next?

Hi R.. I know you've gotten some good advice so far, but just my 2 cents...I have always gone with herbal remedies myself. Valerian root and Chamomile are two of the best ones for sleep. Lavender oil in the bath also helps. (This will help a child relax at bathtime also!) Check with your doctor on taking something herbal. It may be from nature and safer than man-made drugs, but their use is medicinal also and should be treated as such. ALWAYS talk to your doctor before starting any herbal therapy. There are things out there that interact with other drugs and cause problems and some people may not be able to tolerate certain things. Also remember that herbs work differently for different people and they also take longer to work than man-made drugs. You may need to take something for several weeks before you see the full benefits, etc. Anyway, talk to the doc and see what they suggest.

Hi,
I would suggest Benadryl although I don't know if it's okay for your growing baby. So what I would really suggest is the herb called Valerian. It is specifically for sleep and it shouldn't hurt your baby at all. You can get it at a health food store or maybe even at Target. Take as many capsules as you need to fall asleep. I think it's harmless. I take it all the time when I have insomnia. I'd probably try nautral methods like herbs before prescription sleep meds as I think those can be addictive.

I'd go with an herbal sleep remedy that assists you in producing melatonin (the neurotransmitter that induced and maintains the sleep cycle in the brain) Valerian root is a good suggestion, there are others you can find at an herbal store or at Whole Foods in capsule or tea form. If you just want to be able to hit Walgreen's for your cure, they sell capsules with an herbal mixture of melatonin producers conveniently called "Melatonin".

Hi R.,

I just had a baby about a year ago and i had the same problem. I got these candles that were aroma candles that were for calming and drank some warm coco and relaxed my mind and it worked for me but I understand everyone is different. I like my room cool and a fan going and a blankey between my knees and just get so DANG comfie after the bath candles and coco I was smooth out. You know that they make the bedtime wash and lotion for the babiew try that it has lavender and Chamimile in it as well. Hope this helps you a lettle. Good Luck with the new one coming..C.

I have insomnia too, and while I was pregnant it became worse. When I asked my doctor about it, he suggested Tylenol P.M. He said it would help with my back pain (also caused by pregnancy) and it would help me sleep, plus it is safe to take during pregnancy. Hope everything works out.

Well, I'm sure your doctor could help you best, but my suggestion would be to first figure out why you're unable to sleep. You said you went off the meds to get pregnant, but didn't say if you are currently pregnant. Is there a time period after stopping the pills, that your body will need to regulate itself on its own again? Do you think it's stress that's causing you not to sleep, or a physical problem? If it's stress, than my advice would be to do whatever it takes to relax and take some time to yourself to figure out how to rest and be happy again. It is so, so important for us moms to prioritize good sleep, good breaks, and quality time when we're doing something fun (not chores or serving someone else) once in awhile. Of course it's impossible, and would be terribly selfish, for us to put ourselves above everyone else all the time. But if your sleep pattern is suffering, than for the sake of your FAMILY, get some down-time, or outside help. You need that rest to be a good mom and wife.

Good luck and God bless,
M. B

I'm sure you've probably taken this before if you were taking prescription medicine to sleep, but when I was pregnant the doctor told me it was okay to take Benadryl. It won't hurt the baby, and it's safe to take every night. You might want to check with your doctor though.
