I am so sad :( We pulled the "baby" themed walpaper down last night and all baby related stuff out of my 6 year old rooms. Even tho I know he isn't a baby - there is officially nothing left in his room of being a baby.
So on the other hand I am very excited b/c he is getting his big boy room - ya! We went to Lowes last night and he picked out Dove gray for his wall color. He got a grey/white cool designed comforter and skatebored sheets. He is ALL about skating right now. I am kind of worried that with the grey walls and grey comforter his room will be bland. What colors should I use to help brighten the room - I guess accent colors? I still need to get curtains so I figured they should have color in them, right?
Any other suggestions for his walls and how to make him have a cool "skater" room?

Lime/bright Green is PERFECT for this 1. grey/lime green are totally fun 2. they are TOTALLY skater colors!

I like red (and so does my 9 year old son :) His room is gray/black with pops of red. We painted his dressar red and black with chrome handles!
I was going to suggest orange, bright (apple) green, and a turquoise/aqua blue.

I'd go with bright green and bright orange as accent colors.
I would go with orange, personally. When my son was about that age (maybe 7 or 8, I can't actually remember) we decorated his room. He picked out a very cool border that's tiki heads & surfboards & kind of jagged on the top & bottom. We pulled colors from that & painted the bottom half of his room a deep turquoise kind of color & the top is an orangey-yellow with the border in the middle. His curtains were red & it was all super cute together!
We did a very nice yellow. Subtle but a cheery color. Yellow goes nice with greys :)

Have him pick out POSTERS for the walls (skate & snowboard posters tend to be fairly brightly colored), plus some other fav things.
You can paint a white or babyish bookshelves orange (or green, or blue).
A few street signs on the walls.
A brightly colored beanbag type chair.
Match a couple extra pillow cases with the bookshelves (orange, green, or blue).
Hang a first aid kit w/ a big red cross on the wall (full of band-aids, neosporin, etc.). He'll need it for the various scrapes cement riders need! (Can you tell I'm biased, I'm a surfer/snowboarder ;)
SINGLE COLOR curtains. Trust me. My son's 9... and the next couple years any kind of multicolor thing will give you a headache. Littlekid stuff all "blends". Big kid /tween stuff tends to get fairly garish (esp with the 80's theme that's back in vogue). You'll be grateful for that neutral background and a limited number of colors over the next few years!!!
What colors does he want? Colors that could look good with the grey include rich egg yolk yellow/goldenrod, royal purple, magenta, cobalt blue, acid green, bright orange, some others greens, maybe red (depends on the red and how much of it).
yes, definitely hang a couple of skateboard decks up for shelving... make a banch out of one (or a snowboard) and put that at the end of the bed or by the closet. red, orgage, yellow, lime green would all look cool with grey
Primary colors: red, yellow, and blue - for accents.
Are there colors on the comforter that you can just pull off of to decorate the room. How about some cool posters in poster frames of skateboards or skateboarders you can hang up to give it some color. How about some matching window valances/drapes.
Grey with yellow is very trendy right now. I also like a bright orange. Changing paint is cheap and easy so go for impact! I would! Or maybe a bright white trim?

Grey is a great neutral, you could pair it with any combination of colors but here are some good ones-
blue
yellow
green
orange
red
make some wall shelves from an old skateboard/s.
curtain tiebacks or finials with skateboard wheels.
skaters to me conjure up sneakers and duct tape, but I don't know if that works as a "design element" in a little boys room.

Yes, you should definitely throw in some minor color if he'll let you so it's not depressing & drab.
How about some minor splashes of blue or red?
Could you find some "skater" decals?
Maybe you could hang an old skateboard up on the wall (securely!) like a
shallow shelf.
You could find an old helmet to put up on a dresser as a "decoration".
Maybe one poster of a popular "skater" in action?

I would say paint the walls a neutral color and then let him pick everything else that he wants. We made the mistake of letting our son pick the color of his walls and I had to live with bright yellow walls for 4 years---I hated it! And when he wanted to change the room as he got older we had to paint again. So if you don't want to have to keep painting the room over and over again, go neutral :-)

Grey pairs well with the primary colors - blue, yellow and red, in bright hues.
For a boy and a skater vibe..orange is what instantly popped into my head! If it was a girl I would say lime green or purple.
Just go easy on the pieces..solids really? And it should be cool-i-o!
How about those sticky wall art decals, they just stick on without glue so you can change them later on. Or colorful posters with skaters on them. I think the grey is fine just add some decor with different colors. I think most colors blend well with pale grey.
