I need to buy a gift for a girl who will be going into 5th grade next year. Wanted to find out what the popular hits are out there and if your daughter's perfer one particular book series over another. Thanks.

What can I do next?

My girls are teens, but I know around that age my youngest was really into Harry Potter.

I would suggest a gift card to a local bookstore.

My daughter is reading a bit above level, but many girls are, so one of these might be a good start:

-Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief series (my daughter LOVES these)
-Ella Enchanted and Fairest, by Gail Carson Levine (she written a few others, too, that I've liked)
-A Wrinkle in Time (by Madeline L'Engle
-Island of the Blue Dolphins (by Scott O'Dell)
-The Secret Garden or A Little Princess (by Frances Hodgsen Burnett)
-Because of Winn Dixie
-Holes
-Narnia series

They've made movies of several of these, but the books are all FAR better than the movies, so don't be persuaded away if you/she didn't like the movie.
(And we avoid Twilight like the plague here, lol, don't know if other girls are doing that now, too, or not)

When I was that age I loved all of Judy Blumes books. Especially Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.
I remember reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and Chronicles of Narnia, Where the Red Fern Grows.
My favorite when I got a little older was Sweet Valley High

Has she read "Gregor the Overlander"? Both of my kids loved that one. Plus, there are 4 more books to the series if she likes it.

I am a 4th grade teacher, and I actually just got several kids hooked on Peg Kehret. She writes suspense/thriller books and they are pretty good! Most of my students are about two reading levels behind, so I only have one or two that are reading on grade level/above and they are into Diary of a Wimpy Kid right now. My high reader had a whole desk of books today. I'll have to take a look and I can recommend some more!

My daughter has always loved the Judy Moody books, and also the whole Lemony Snickett collection. Recently my sister lent her one of her beloved Babysitters Club books to see if Hailey liked it & she did, so now she'll end up getting that whole series from Awesome Aunt Becky!

My daughter is in 4th grade and her suggestion was The Red Pyramid, which is a family suspense/adventure. She liked it so much she asked me to read it too so we could talk about it. I'm about 150 pages in and it's quite fun. (and surreptitiously educational!)
