What Baby Carrier for 8 Month Old and 22Pounds?

My son has outgrown his Bjorn but is only 8 months old and I need to come up with a replacement. He was used to facing out - so I'm not sure how he will do with facing inward - am looking for something that both my husband and I can wear. We plan to spend a lot of time outside - trip to SeaWorld and DC this summer so we want to be comfortable carrying for at least a couple of hours and in the summer heat.

Please send your thoughs, suggestions. Thank you! C.

So What Happened?

A friend lent me her Moby Wrap and I like it very much for indoors when I want to have him facing outwards (like at a museum). I bought the Ergo Sport - and it is awesome for outdoors. I wore him both on my back and front at SeaWorld for probably 4+ hours per day and no back pain at all! He likes facing inward when he is sleepy and the sleeing hood is awesome!

Thank you all for your advice, it was super helpful and I appreciated all of it:)

We got a baby backpack an my 16 month old LOOOOOVES IT!! He weighs 24lbs, and I think this thing goes up to 40 (or 38). It's. AWESOME. He thinks he's the coolest thing sitting up so high! We slather him with sunscreen and have him a wear a big sunhat :) I'm teeny, but it's super easy for me to wear him :)

We have and Moby and an Ergo. I love them both, but living in Florida where it gets hot really early in the year I found the Moby to be a little bit "warm". We got an Ergo Sport and LOVE it! Spent all day out at Wakulla Springs in 90+ degree weather and neither one of us got hot. I like it because it does have a sleeping hood so that way if little man falls asleep I can cover his head and he can have his own little area to snuggle in.

I had a backpack, I don't remember the brand but it was very comfortable and my daughter loved it. I don't know if they all do this, but mine had a very light aluminum frame that it could actually stand on it's own with. I could stand it on a table, counter, chair etc, strap my daughter in and then turn around and put it on my back without help if no one else was around. It had very padded straps for the shoulders and at the small of my back and was very adjustable to I could use it or my husband very easily. Good luck!

If you want something that will last for a long time (good for babies and toddlers), I highly recommend a Kelty Kids Backpack. He will sit up high enough that he can see over your head (some carriers that you can put on your back leave your child low and looking at your shoulderblades). And it's very comfortable because if you take the time to adjust it properly, it puts the weight on your hips, not your back and shoulders.

A stroller!! :)
Seriously, I love my Moby and could wear it all day without pain! I've had my 30 lb 2 year in it before. We also have a Kelty backpack carrier that my husband usually wears and says it's comfy.

We LOVED our sling and we used it until my daughter was about 2. I had to buy a different one for my husband (bigger). You can configure it many ways, front, hip, piggy back, etc.

I would get an Ergo carrier. He would have to face in but you can also wear it as a backpack.

Would he sit in a back-pack type carrier, so you dont break your back? He can face outward or he could face toward you.

good luck, I know there are some back pack carriers out there that would support his size and your back. (I have a big boy but he never liked being in a sling)

I have 3 small children and love carrying our baby in an Angel Pack. I used the Bjorn until, like you, my baby grew too heavy and my back began to ache. I switched to the Angel Pack at about 9 months of age because it can be worn inward front facing and as a back pack. I never have back pain carrying him back pack style and now my little guy is almost 24 lbs and 16 months old. Hope you find the right pack for your needs. My friend has an Ergo and loves it too!
