What Are These Red Bumps on My Baby?

Over the weekend, my 1 y/o daughter broke out in red bumps across her back & shoulders. It started spreading down her arms and there were a few random bumps on her back, legs, stomach, & face. Everyone I showed them to had no idea what they were. They didn't think it was chicken pox. She spent the night with her grandma the night before. She gave her a peanut butter cracker (her dad is allergic to peanuts). Could it have been a food allergy? I don't know what that looks like. Or could it have been heat rash? The redness has faded a little this morning, but the bumps are still there. She didn't run a fever and they didn't seem to bother her. Any idea what this could have been?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your great responses. I just took her to the pediatrician and they said it was nothing to be worried about. It could be a million things from a viral rash or reactions to detergents, sunscreen, etc. or she just came into contact with something that didn't agree with her. So, we don't know what caused it, I'm just glad to be reassured it was nothing to be concerned about. The doc did mention that if it was a food allergy, it would have most likely shown up right away and usually around the mouth area first. I don't think it was a food reaction, but I'm going to let her grandma know to avoid peanuts!! Just to be on the safe side. And to only wash my daughters clothes in the detergent I've given her.

Can I ask you why you didn't take her to the doctor? If you thought it could have been a food allergy you should have taken her to the doctor or at least called to see what the doctor would have wanted to do. I am a Medical Assistant and it could have been anything. You really should consult a doctor for things like that.

it could be a viral rash-very common in kids and usually don't cause much discomfort. Typically it lasts a few weeks and slowly fades. A peanut allergy is unlikely. Usually an allergy is short lived and with peanuts the allergic reaction is trouble breathing or very itchy hives.

Did the red bumps spread at all??
My daughter got the Chicken Pox from the vac. shot. lol
It was a light case of them, and they said that she will probably not get them again in her life, so yea for her. ;o)
But if the bumps spread & she recently got her Chix. Pox Vac. I'd take her to the Dr.
Hope you find your answer.

Hey C.!
I saw your post and had to reply. I have 2 days where my son had what sounds like the same thing. I took him to the Ped and was told that when babies/toddlers drool alot then the saliva starts to break down the skin.. of course thats what saliva is supposed to do. So, after keeping him completely dry and had a topical cream to apply- everything healed up and I havent seen it since. Hope that helps!

Sounds like either an allergic reaction, in which case you would want to contact your doctor yesterday or maybe exzema - if the baby is itching, you may want to put some baby powder w/cornstarch on them and still contact your doctor.

I would say call her doctor and get a food allergy test done. She may be allergic to peanuts and peanut butter just like her dad.

The bumps could be just about anything. Your mother or MIL could have used something in the wash that didn't agree with your daughter. My kids were always breaking out with something. Only one of them has any allergies to speak of which have been proven. As to the peanut butter, the people I know who can't even be around peanuts of any kind develope problems breathing when they come in contact with any form of peanuts. I would suggest that you just keep an eye on the bumps and continue enjoying your daughter. We keep our kids way to clean nowdays. Exposure to things can usually help the kids, not hurt them.

ok.... my son had the exact same thing 2 wks ago. when i talked to the dr on the phone she said it sounded like hand foot mouth disease, i took him in 3 days later and it turned out being strep throat. crazy huh? but they said having a rash all over or even is just some areas is a virus that may or may not need to be treated. i'd take the babe in just to find out what it is.

My first guess would be heat rash since they didn't seem to bother her. If it was an allergic reaction it would have been hives that itch really bad. So I would worry about it if she still doesn't seem bothered by them but if they stay for a long period you could always just contact your ped just to be safe! Good Luck!

Hi Chrystal after my son was born we thought he had food allergies and one of the things that would happen is a red bumpy rash all over his body. We limmited everything he ate and was around even to the formula. It ended up being that he has very sensitive skin, eczema and he's alergic to dust mites. If you think your daughters allergic to peanuts obviously don't give them to her but check the labels on everything. If you go to a health food store they can really help you. They did me. My son's allergist said that if it is a true peanut allergy they would react almost immediately. If you want to see an allergist I can give you the name of ours who is really good. Food allergies can be pased down to our childern too. Kind wierd.

My son also gets heat bumps VERY easily. They look like a wierd rash.

I hope I've helped.

Sounds like a peanut allergy. My son had the same ind of rash with peanuts. I would tell gramma to layoff the peanuts, especially if dad is allergic. It really isn't a good idea to give peanut anything so young.
Good Luck!

Rapidly spreading hives are a sign of an allergic reaction, especially if the hives appeared soon after eating the peanut butter. Definitely see a doctor about this. My daughter was diagnosed with peanut allergy at a very early age. She never had a reaction because she was diagnosed very early--her severe eczema prompted our doc to run a blood test for food allergies--and she tested off scale for peanut. With your family history of peanut allergy, I'd say keep your little one away from all nut products. There's a good chance that her next exposure could be an anaphylactic (life-threatening) reaction. Allergic reactions to nuts tend to get worse with each exposure. I'd recommend getting a blood test for allergy (RAST test) from an allergist. They can prescribe an epi-pen for emergency use.

It could be an allergy to the peanut, which kids shouldn't have until they are 3 or 4 especially if there is an allergy in the family. Was she acting unusual, wheezing or was there a rash on her mouth? If not then it could have beed prickly heat, and just clean the area with clear water if she gets dirty from playing. My 16 month old gets prickly heat around the diaper area sometimes.

Could be a lot of things, but my daughter is not supposed to have peanut butter until she's 2 years old, and we have no history of peanut allergies in the family. With your husband being allergic, I think you should wait longer than that.

Could be roseola causing the bumps on the torso. Once the bumps show up (usually preceded by a low fever for a day or two), there's nothing else to be done.

Could be a reaction to sunscreen or sunblock. Could be heat rash.

I am not sure what peanut allergy reactions look like but I was told once before that food allergy tend to show their effects around the mouth and nowhere else. With that said, google the skin rash called moluscum, it sounds like what you are describing could be this. However when you google it do over react because it sounds scary but it is really not all that bad. My son had a very mild case of it and of course I completely freaked myself out reading all about it. But you should take her to her peditrician and also a dermotologist. Good luck.

It sounds like either heat rash or a dermatilogical reaction to a detergent, lotion or perfume she may have been exposed to at grandma's. I suppose it could be the peanuts, but would think she would have other symptoms, too. My little one had a rash of small red bumps on his neck and shoulders before the last doctors appointment so I showed it to her and she thought it was either from detergent or a tag on his shirt irritating his skin. She told me to just use a little cortisone cream on it.

Hello C.,

It may be the peanut butter, but with the heat being the way its been, it might be a heat rash too. I don't believe it is Roseola as I have seen that first hand. A Roseola rash looks like someone placed lace on the skin and spray painted it red then removed it. Besides a child with that usually runs a pretty high fever, there is no mistaking it, and you stated your daughter had no fever.
I would give it a few days and see if it goes away. If it hasn't, I'd get her checked to make sure its nothing serious.

Good Luck

Hi, I'm sure the peanut allergy is scary for you, however, that would more likely be around the mouth. Also, my SIL who is allergic to peanuts says it makes her mouth and thoat itchy. The red bumbs may be heat rash from being sweaty. Try putting baby powder on your little one. If it's not going away I would contact your pediatrician, just to feel safe.

There is definitely a possibility of an allergic reaction if dad or you have allergies to foods etc. It could also be a heat rash. What I would do is wait for it to go away and try some peanut butter and see what happens. If she breaks out again then it is an allergy to peanuts. If she doesn not break out again then more likely it was a heat rash. Just keep a close eye on her when you do the peanut butter thing.

I know you said that she has not been running a fever with the rash, but did she run a slight fever anytime just prior to the rash? My son had Roseola when he was younger. He ran a slight fever for a couple of days then he was fine for a couple of days and then the rash showed up out of nowhere. I would make an appointment with the doctor because it could be any of the things suggested. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

Without seeing pictures of the bumps, it'd be hard to say what caused them -- but given the family history of peanut allergy, it is *certainly* possible. Some allergic reactions do appear around the mouth, but OTHERS do not - and rashes on upper torso and arms and face could be an indication of food allergy.
