Hi Moms,

I noticed that ny 28 month old son has 2 light small brown blotches on his torso. What are these? Are they beginnings or moles? I have never noticed them or me. He is quite fair but they are not freckles (much too big and very light in color) Thanks!

I think they are cafe au lait spots...is this something to be worried about? Why would they require "evaluation"?

What can I do next?

My daughter has one on her arm. Any spots/marks on the body should be watched for changes in size and shape but not necessarily a dangerous thing. One of my older girls has one on her side and it has never changed or anything and she considers it to be her own mark.

They sound like cafe au lait marks, you should show them to your pediatrician at your next appointment, not sure where but if on some place on the body they may require some evaluation.

I'd tend to agree that it's likely a birthmark, but without seeing it, it's impossible to know forsure.

I think Martha's advice on mentioning at the next pediatrician's appointment is a great idea.

Good luck!

I have one of those on the side of my stomach. It's just a birthmark.
It's light brown and round. I've had it all my life. Haven't had any problems
with it. Get it checked out by the doctor, but I don't think you should worry too much about it. Hope that's helpful.

It may just be a birth mark that is showing up late.

Sounds like cafe au lait spots - birthmarks. They can indicate endocrine issues. My oldest son has one (and does have a treatable hormone deficiency). My next son, who was adopted, has one on his face that only shows up when he's been in the sun.

I think they are pretty birthmarks. But then, I might be a bit biased since 2 of my 3 kids have them. : )

My daughter has a large cafe au lait spot, but the Dr. said not to worry until she has three. Then there is a disease that goes with that. Make sure he does not have anymore.

I have a big one on the side of my face, one on my belly button, and one on my leg. My younger daughter has one on her tummy and my little brother has them on his legs. I've had them most of my life and I like them. They're "my" marks. :) I wouldn't worry. Just keep extra sunscreen on them b/c they'll get darker with the sun.
