What Age Did Your Dd Get Period?

Statistically, kids are going through puberty earlier now than in the past. What age was your dd when they got their period? My dd is 10 and although she hasn't come close to puberty yet, she has friends who are quite developed and some have told my dd that they got their period as early as 3rd grade. I don't remember all this early development when I was a kid (probably because I'm older and kids actually did develop later.

From what I've read, it's a combination of kids carrying more weight (hormones are stored in fat) and the estrogen chemicals in our environment which are causing the early onset.

So What Happened?

Also, I'd be interested to know how much they grew after getting their period.

Just wanted to add to what you said- A lot of it is hereditary also. Chances are a girl will get her period around the same time her mother did. I know I did, and I can almost bet my daughter will too. We all have the same body frame.
I started my period at almost 16 years old. I grew 4 inches in college!

My oldest was 11 1/2 (exactly). Her foot has not grown since 5th grade and she grew about 2" after her period started. She is 5'7".

My youngest will be 11 in February. I expect she could get it at any time now although she only weighs 78lbs but she is 5' tall. We will see.

I got my period one week before my tenth birthday. I am 54 now, and several years beyond menopause. I was 5' 8" from about the age of 12 on...and still am now, but expect to begin shrinking at any time...lol

Two of my daughters got their periods at the age of 10. They both grew for about 2 or 3 more years.

Hope this helps!!

Try asking your Pediatrician... and per their growth rates after getting their periods if gotten early.

No matter why, girls are getting it earlier or not, it does happen.
And there are various factors.

And yes, even at 9 years old, some girls get their periods. And start developing physically.
But still, their emotional development is STILL, only 9 or 10 years old, etc. Emotional development and maturity is not the same as, physical development.

My daughters are still toddlers, but I can confirm/agree that it's often hereditary. I had juuuuust turned 10, my mother was 11, and my grandmother was 9. All the women in my family just develop early. I had reached my adult height of 5'6" by the time I was in sixth grade.

My daughter is 8 and hasn't gotten it yet, thank God. I was 12, but my sister was 11 when she got hers. She had a lot of migraines in adulthood right before her period and her period was never consistent. She developed breast cancer in her late 30s.

I have been very fascinated by hormones lately since I am now 40. I really think my sister had estrogen dominance.

Oldest daughter, now almost 13 - 10yrs and 3mos. Has grown maybe an inch since, in the last 2 1/2yrs. She's just over 5'.

Youngest daughter - 11yrs and 3days (just this past weekend, in fact). She's at 5'1". I'll be curious to see how much she grows in the next couple of years...

My daughter just turned 13 in October 2013. She got her period when she was 12 (January 2013). I was surprised that she got it so early. She is very athletic and is a big girl (meaning tall and muscular).

14. My oldest started at 14 as well, and I expect my youngest (now 14) to start any day.
There's some argument about hormones in milk causing puberty to start earlier these days. I don't know if there's any merit to that but I never made my kids drink milk so who knows (?)

Me? Just turned 14, in the Fall of 9th grade. I'm pretty sure I grew several more inches after that. I was THE shortest kid in my class in 6th grade. That began to change in 7th. Now I am 5'8". My oldest daughter turned 12 in August and the doctor is guessing that she has about 2 years before she gets her period. Sounds like she is following in my footsteps.

Well, I'm in my 40s and I got my period at 10 (4th grade) and had been in a bra since 3rd. I was skinny and there weren't the hormones in the food that there are today. It's just the genetics of my family - all the girls developed early for generations - my mother and my grandmother for sure. Now mixed with my husband's family's genes, my daughter is almost 12 and still probably a year away, thank goodness. So, in our family, the age is getting later.

Maybe you don't remember it because we didn't talk about it so much!

And in terms of growth, I remember my pediatrician saying you have one year to grow past the onset of menses. I am not quite 5'1", the same height I was in 5th grade, so spot on in terms of the growth calendar. Again, everyone in my family is short - men and women, so genetics.

It was 1 day after my 11th birthday in 1972 - I was in 5th grade.
Only one girl in our 4th grade class wore a bra.
By 5th grade most girls wore bras but we were mostly pretty flat chested.
You could get your period and still not be wearing a bra yet.

My dd is 9 and showing NO signs of puberty any time soon, so it'll probably be a while. I was 11 and one of the first girls to get it in my class.
