Hi all! My sister's house got water in the basement over the weekend. They are drying it out with a shop vac and a dehumidifier. The problem is, there is still that musty water smell. They need to get the smell out as soon as possible. I was wondering if anyone had any tried and true remedies for me to pass on to her. I've found a few but would love input from all the great ladies out there. Thanks for any help you can give!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice! My sister rented two dehumidifiers, tried vinegar, and also baking soda. They pulled up a little bit of carpet, but nothing was damaged. The dehumidifiers really did the job. The smell and wetness was taking care of. Thanks!

You want to clean up and dry out the area the humidifyer is great but an expensive use of electicity. A mold removal person told me to use fans to get air moving around and it costs less to run 24-7. I have this smell in a room under my stairs and when i open it up and run the fans for a few days it gose away.

Hi M.,

Sol-u-Mel is definetly the best for that, but you can't purchase it in a regular store, it is with a membership to get this naturally based products at retail price that you can buy it, but if you know what I am talking about, I don't think that anything can beat it.

Hi M.!! I have had the same problem as you [due to the recent flooding] and they told us that the only way to get that out was with diluted clorox water and it really works.Since you are pregnant i don't know if you can use the ammonia or not but my sisters whole house flooded down stairs and thats what the professionals told them to do.I hope that this helps!! Good luck and God Bless!L. S

I've heard if you sprinkle baking soda all over the floor, it'll absorb the odor. I had a friend that tried bleach on their basement, but the fumes about made em pass out! If they go that route make sure plenty of ventilation! For best results, ask somebody at like Home Depot or Lowes, I think there is some product you can also buy to help with that smell... Good Luck!

hey i dont know about were you are at but in lawton we have a service called servicemasters that come in and clean up after a leak or flood and our insurance paid for the service due to future heath hazards that could arise it is something you should look into because that creats a perfect opportunity for mold and other harmful things to grow, and with the musty smell it is possible that mold could already be forming!!!
you might check to see if someplace like this exsists in your area!!!

Hi M.....my sister's basement also got wet this past weekend...she rented an industrial size fan (HUGE-stands about 4 feet tall), opened all the windows, and bleached the floor (they had to pull up all of the carpet). If your sister has drywall, make sure it's not wet....that will hold the moisture and cause mold to grow...they might need to replace some of it. Good luck!

I would suggest you get an ozone humidifer. My grandmother got raw sewage put in her basement. That is what they use to help clean out her basement. Using bleach water and pulling out all the installition out of there is also another possible way to fix that problem. I know that problem we get water in our basement all the time. That is what we have to do when it gets really bad. Good Luck!

Try renting an "ozone machine" -- I think that is what they are called. They used one after our house fire to help remove the smoky smell from our belongings, car dealers use them in used cars that don't smell good. Ask a rental store about it, they should know what it is. Good luck!

Cat litter with baking soda (Arm and Hammer brand cat litter is one of them) works great if you spread it over the damp area and leave it overnight. Kills the smell pretty quickly and sucks up any lingering moisture. Make sure you get the non-clumping sort. Other than that, open any windows down there if you can and keep the air circulating.
