I really want to have more energy (not to mention look a little better in a bathing suit this summer). So I recently started working out and I know nutrition ("diet" in the sense of eating right/what I eat, not dieting) is critical. But I'm having a hard time with this whole eat a little fat, a protein and some carbs six times a day. Can anyone shed some light on how to eat to gain the benefits of my hard work in the gym - like I know not to eat ice cream - but to rev up my metabolism? I'm confused. After literally thirty years of not eating breakfast I am forcing myself to eat first thing in the am - I know this is really important - but what else can I do? Thanks Moms!

What can I do next?

Hmm, foods that are you friend right how:

Almonds - great snack for protein and fat, and to fill you up
yogurt
string cheese
hummus/veggies
any white meat
fish
steamed veggies
steal cut oatmeal
whole grains - nothing white

Watch your portions and sugar intake. swap for natural sugars where you can (truvia is a nice substitute, and I like Agave Nectar to sweeten oatmeal and tea).

Keep each "meal" between 200-300 calories.

Hope that helps. It's more about what kinds of food you're eating, rather than getting exact ratios in. Those are some basic guidleines above to get you started.

You know the more rules you have to follow the more likely you are to give up because it's too hard. Instead of trying to follow a time line of eating figure out what are good for your body things that you should be having. I eat 1000-1200 calories a day. I plan out all my eating in the morning so I know that if I'm hungry in the afternoon I can grab a hard boiled egg or peanuts in their shells. Dinner is a plate of 1/4 protein and 3/4 veggies. Anything after dinner is fruit only.

Get use to reading the labels and seeing the calories and serving size. It makes it much easier to reach for that sandwich wrap instead of 2 slices of whole grain bread when you know that the wrap has more protein and half the calories.

Just make educated choices and watch your portions. Those portion sizes will do you in every time.

Here are a few simple tips.

Start by detoxing your body. My prefered detox system is Robin Anthony's Renu Herbs Detox trio. It is two liquids and 1 pill. The pill is a colon cleanse, one of the liquids is a detox tea for the cleansing of the blood and liver and the other is a parasite killer. They really do the trick.

Breakfast is very important. Eat a large breakfast, a mid-sized lunch and a light dinner. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Try to eat the same time everyday. That discipline really helped me. Eat healthy snacks. Eat snacks. Nuts are great but a little goes a long way.

Also variety in tastes is also a bonus meaning trying to stimulate your taste buds with flavors and textures. Think in terms of salty, bitter, sweet and sour for flavors.

Trying new foods is also a bonus while trying to loose weight.

For some eating more frequent smaller meals works. For me cutting down on my meat protein while increasing my vegetable and fruit intake seems to work.

I've learned over many years of running & personal training that STRENGTH TRAINING is key to losing weight. You don't want to cut out cardio, but many people overlook strength training and that's what builds muscle which burns calories doing nothing. Cardio only burns fat at a certain intensity and only after 15 minutes of it. Strength training is very important. Also you can cut down gluten and dairy which helps a lot with both weight and energy level. Also sugar. If you want more energy cut out sugar. It depletes the b vitamins which are your energy generators. It's great you're eating breakfast!!!

I dropped all processed carbs and I feel so much more energized. And I'm never hungry.

I also just read that sprinkling nutritional yeast adds fiber and protein to your diet and that keeps you full and revs up your metabloism.

Hi L. - after trying several "diets" - and getting totally confused about are carbs good? are carbs bad? Eat good fats? but what about cheese? haha... It is confusing! I too hate eating breakfast, I have my coffee and am not hungry until late morning or noonish. And I know that is bad for your metabolism!

I have found a system that I have used that I love! It is called the TLS (transitions lifestyle system). I would love to send you some info about it - if you are interested please email me at ____@____.com and I will email you info.
thanks!

I totally understand where you are coming from. I am a FT Working mom working out 5 days a week at a pretty high intensity and seeing some pretty great results. What I have found works for me is to have a shake of sorts for breakfast (used to have shakeology but it is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!!)and then have fruits later in the morning as snacks. At lunch I use a high fiber bread for my sandwich and a low-cal yogurt. About 2 hours later I will have another piece of fruit or veggie...whatever I cut up the night before and maybe a string cheese on my way home from work. We pre-plan our dinners so there is no figuring things out at the last minute. I am a calorie counter and surprisingly I come up short every night (as in I didn't consume them all). I think things you can measure out and package at home make for easy snacks, like nuts or cut up fruit/veggies like Manda offered. Best of luck!

It's my understanding that if you follow a workout with a high protein meal within one hour, your body will utilize that toward muscle development. Best protein would be eggs, definitely not soy which is in every protein bar/drink. Soy actually can have a negative impact on the thyroid gland and your metabolism, especially in any unfermented form. For weight loss, the best thing you could possibly do is give up wheat or at the very least white sugar/white flour. Good luck to you!

Eat a good amount of protein within 1/2 hour after a workout. That will help you retain muscle. You will lose inches even before you lose weight and look great in that bathing suit.

Don't eat big meals and make those snacks very light, but always be sure a decent dose of protein. Protein sates you.

I drink meal shakes and eat snack bars with protein. I actually do not have those other two snacks a day. The protein shakes I drink keep me sated and I rarely need a snack. If you would like some links to the products or just to information about how to eat shoot me a message. This is what I do!

You can also rev up you metabolism by eating 5 to 6 small meals a day (eating every 2 to 3 hours). I don't do the exercise I should be doing, but 'calorie shifting' works for me. This can be done even for those who work outside the home. When I worked in Corporate America we were told we had to do something every 2 hours. 2 hours into work a 15 minute break; 4 hours - lunch, 6 hours a 15 minute break and 8 to 8 1/2 hours time to go home. So you could do breakfast and 3 hours at work a snack, and then plan your times after that. Once you are home and do dinner, a small snack after dinner.
