Hi mommies! I'm 41, been on depression meds, not now, because I gained a lot of weight with them, so now I'm trying saint Jhon Wort, my doc knows, and I'm trying to loose the weight. I've been off the meds for a couple of months, but nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the Zoloft slowed my metabolism so much that now I can't loose any weight! I've reading different books and aproaches. I know, I know, I should exercise, but, like all of you, I work all day and really I don't have any energy! I was tested for thyroid, but apparently is ok. I was just trying to see if giving up coffee in the morning, and start with a whey protein shake instead would be good, it's supposed to accelerate your metabolism. Anybody knows?? or any ideas of how I can start to melt this stubborn pounds away????? Just looking for some encouragement words here too. Thanks girls!

Like somebody says, I need something that is a healthier otion for my breakfast now, usually a cup of coffee with millk, I don't drink it alone, and one toast with cream cheese or something like it, or a bagel, like somebody said, I don't like to eat eggs or meat in the mornings. If it could make me gain, I don't know what else I can do. I want something that carry me until lunch

What can I do next?

When I was working I would eat the South Beach Diet protein bars and a bottle of water for breakfast. I'd eat it on my way to work around 7 and it'd tide me over until 11:30 lunch. I think it has 10 grams of protein, which is a lot for a bar. My favorite were the peanut butter flavor!

My metabolism hit a brick wall right after I had my son 2 years ago. I have been struggling with loosing the weight too. I have found that protein shakes from GNC help. They don't taste that bad either. Chocolate is my fave with an added banana is AWESOME...I found that adding little things like taking the stairs instead of elevators and picking the farthest parking space when shopping actually make a difference over time. Hang in there!

I've been on all sorts of diets (weight watchers and nutrisystem included) and the one that worked best for me has been the 17-day diet. I followed it fairly strictly and I didn't plateau at all - unusual for me. I am 42 and have hypothyroid so it's nearly impossible for me to gain weight. But I've become a big believer in this diet! It includes drinking green tea three times a day and starting the day with a glass of hot water and lemon, which is supposed to kick-start your metabolism. To be honest, I didn't do the hot water and lemon because it made me feel sick in the mornings. And I only have two cups of tea because I don't always have time for the third... But I have lost as much weight as the diet said I would and it has been fantastic! I was unable to get below a certain weight for years and with this diet I finally did it! You can buy the book on Amazon for not much and it includes eating lots of yogurt and fruit, which is good. I didn't feel hungry on it, either. They do say to eat eggs in the morning at times, but you can substitute for other things... Anyway, good luck! It's hard, but you can do it!

Hi K.,

Your body needs to rid itself of all the synthetic chemicals (the residue from your meds) that it is holding onto. Just because you've stopped taking them doesn't mean they are gone. A detox is the best place to start. THEN add an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex to rebuild the nutrition so your body can begin to heal. We did this with my husband and he lost 110 pounds without even changing his eating habits or his activity level. My husband took one (and still takes) one that is guaranteed to absorb.

Chemicals wreak havoc on your body in soooo many ways. The body will NOT hold onto weight it doesn't need if it is functioning properly....

God bless,

I discovered protein shakes 16 years ago and love them. I never have anything else for breakfast any more because I like feeling great.
I use both whey and soy protein.
I don't drink coffee, but you don't have to necessarily give it up. If you are relying on it for energy, you won't need that with the shake.
You will also feel much better and have more energy if you exercise.
Good luck!
Let me know if you want to know which ones I use.

A good protein shake does not have bad carbs that will turn to sugar. The opposite is true. It used to be that cheap ones had sugar for the first ingredient. Also make sure the shake includes all nine essential amino acids.
You can loose weight with the whey shake I drink even if you don't exercise. But I definitely advocate for exercise.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you are skipping meals or eating very little, your body is holding onto the fat. Protein shakes are easy and you can make them yourself without all the added sugars. I usually have a protein shake each morning: 1-2 cups of frozen fruit, banana, 1/2 cup of yogurt, 1/2 cup of milk with protein powder (if you are not allergic, why is generally the most tolerated. I like using almond butter instead and add some flax seed). You can play around with making your own shakes. It's also amazing how a lot of our health problems may be related to our diet and food sensitivities. You may want to consider an elimination/detox diet to cleanse your system of the drugs and to reintroduce foods to determine if you have any food sensitivities. A blood draw can also be done for food sensitivities but the accuracy is a little less than an elimination diet. It's amazing how if you cut our diary, wheat, and eggs from your diet that many of the processed unhealthy foods also get eliminated. And as far as exercise, find something that you enjoy. Nia is a great program that teaches people to reconnect to their bodies so one can develop more awareness of the changes they need to make to live healthier. I've had a Spirutein brand protein shake mixed with milk every morning for breakfast for years. I have not intended to lose weight. I started drinking them when I was working out many hours a week. I like them because the added protein in the morning keeps me from being terribly hungry before noon and then making bad choices for lunch. And because I don't like eggs or meat in the morning.

You could use a protein shake to lose weight, if it is a more nutritious choice than you are now making for breakfast. Just read the labels for protein, sugar, and calories to make an informed choice.

Protein shakes were developed for people who were doing serious body building, trying to GAIN weight (as muscle mass, mostly). They shouldn't be considered a way to lose weight.
You can do a few things to boost your metabolism again. Park farther from the building and walk, briskly, to your office. Take stairs instead of elevator. Go for a quick walk on breaks. And even 10-15 minutes in the morning of evening of some sort of strength training (yoga & pilates are good choices) can really help. Ironically, when you exercise more, you tend to find yourself with MORE energy through the day than less. Even little bits help.

You should really look into the Abs Diet for Women. It is built around eating a ton of protein and shakes are a huge part of it. It will give you the tools to work this into your diet and also explain to you why it is important. I wouldn't just start adding protein shakes unless you are on a special diet with them or need them b/c you are in serious training. They have the possibility to make you gain a lot if you are not careful.

Protein shakes are usually high in carbs so if you dont exercise it just metabolizes into sugar and defeats the purpose :(

I would cut out carbs... focus on eating a high protein breakfast and lots of vegetables and protein during the day. I went throught the same thing until my doctor changed my diet to high protein even telling at my visit after losing 30 lbs to eat more protein. I lost it all and never excercised regularly less than twice a week the whole time and never long than 40 mins when I did find the time. The best part you can eat as much protein as you want, so you don't have to get hungery. Focus on what you can have not on what you can't. Ok carbs...grapefruit, beans, and yogurt but not more than once a day. This just a general idea there are lots of books out there good luck finding the best plan for you :)

Yoga works. Get into it and you can do it at home on the 5 days you don't go to class.
Yoga will take off 30 lbs in a year if you do an hour a day.
Vitamin D 5,000 units a day will knock depression dead.
Living proof here talking about both methods. Yoga also kills depression.

ONLY drink Whey protein shakes if you work out daily! It's meant to build muscle mass, not to loose weight ... you drink those and do not work out appropriately and you will only gain weight.

I've done a lot of research on weight loss and nutrition. They key is keeping the sugar/carbs down and getting enough protein to keep your blood sugar steady. When your blood sugar drops you get hungry.

Eat small portions several times a day and make sure you have a little protein with each meal.

Here are some sample ideas:

Breakfast:
One egg or 2 egg whites with one piece of whole grain toast (or whole grain/low calorie tortilla, or whole grain sanwich thin) and a piece of fruit, or...

A SMALL bowl of oatmeal with cut up fruit as a sweetener (steel cut oats are best, cause they have the most whole grain, but they take a while to cook. Trader Joe's has a version that only takes about 5-7 minutes to cook.) OR...

A Max Protein shake from Costco. They're only 160 calories, but have 30 g protein and only 3 g sugar, along with a piece of fruit.

AM snack:

A piece of fruit or veg and a wedge of light string cheese

Lunch:

Salad with light dressing, tons of veggies, and lean meat (chicken, fish, etc), or any other veggie/protein combo.

PM snack:

baby carrots or other sliced veg and 2-3T hummus.

Dinner:

Same type of choices as lunch

Nighttime snack:

Fat-free yogurt (I love Nancy's plain) with some cut-up fruit, or a spoonful of sugar-free jam mixed in, or

Light popcorn

A great way to seriously rev up your metabolism is to first thing in the morning drink a few oz. of water with some lemon in it. It's gross, but I 've been struggling with weight too, and nothing worked for me. As soon as I started to do this, I lost a little weight. I think it would atleast help your metabolism kick in. And, my personal trainer said that you should drink whey protein shakes as long as you are counting in the calories to your usual calorie intake for the day, and the best time to drink it is right after a workout. If you can't workout, just make sure to really watch the calories. I use Jillian Michaels chocolate whey protein because it has only 100 calories for 1 scoop, and it makes you full right away and lasts for a few hours.

I may have a great idea for your weight loss. I have been trying to find a weight loss program for years and I finally found one that seems to be working. In fact, there are four of us and we all are losing weight on it.

it is called Different Bodies, Different Diets, (Women's Edition). Go to Amazon.com and look it up. there are 25 different body types and if you get this book it will give you what foods are best for your body type - what to eat to lose weight and if you are really skinny what to eat if you want to gain weight.

I have lost 5 lbs in two weeks and my friends have lost between 3 and 5 lbs. I started first then my friends.

You should also get the questionnaire for women to see what you would be. I am not sure why they have it separate but they do. I bought the version that you can download on your computer (less expensive) and then transferred it to my kindle.

I bought the women's edition for $12.00 (hardcopy) and the men's edition (men need this too) for $5.00. These prices include s&h. These are used books but are just like new.

Eat a couple of eggs and some fruit or whole grains to go with them in the mornings. Most (not all but MOST) of the protein shakes are loaded with calories as well. The reason is revs your metabolism is the protein in the shake. You can get enough protein to do that without all those calories... a single large egg has 6 or 7 grams of protein. A pair of them has 12-14 grams. Pair those with a slice of whole wheat (WHOLE wheat) toast with peanut butter on it (adds another 6-9 grams of protein) and you've had almost as much as you'll get in one of those shakes. With fewer calories, and the added bonus of getting to actual chew food. :)

I read this and went...wow this could be me writing this!! I was on Cymbalta, I went off because I want to try and have a baby, I have also gained alot of weight, not because of the pill I don't think just my lack of healthy choices. SO I am still having issues with depression so I too am trying St. Johns Wort. Starting today (after I go grocery shoping) I am starting low carb lifestyle....NOT DIET...Im going to make it a life change. Fruit (some not a lot) veggies, protien. No nasty starches. Get back into working out for more energy, I know its hard to find time...TRUST ME I KNOW...but I also know when im working out I have more energy. I have to loose this 35lbs I am so miserable!

Are you saying you don't like eggs in the morning? Oatmeal with fruit is a good one to eat also. Or make a smoothie, fruit and a handful of spiniach you can't taste the spinach but it super good for you. add some protein powder if you want. If your not working out cutting out the carbs will help you to still loose, but I highly recemmend adding a workout in once in a while. The Jillian Michael DVD's are short 20 min workouts.
Hope this helps just so you know your not alone! Good luck :)
