Hi everyone,

After lots of wonderful advice from so many on this site, my husband and I have decided to try to get pregnant with our third baby! My only concern is that I am 20 lbs heavier than I would like. I am hypothyroid and my levels were off for about 9 mos without being addressed (I have since changed doctors!), that and my stress eating has led to me being heavier than I have ever been :( I'm wondering if I can start an exercise program now while I am trying to conceive? I gained 40lbs with my last pregnancy and am afraid what my body will look like after a third preganancy with that weight gain plus the extra 20 lbs that I am already carrying. Any advice?

Thanks so much,

N.

Absolutely it's a very good time to start and if you start now you can continue though the pregnancy. There is a great site called Sparkpeeople.com that helped me a lot to lose 25 lbs while I was TTC (trying to conceive). They have groups of people that you can join for all kinds of different hobby's and things and one of the groups are for people who are trying to lose weight to become pregnant. Then they have a sister sight should you become pregnant called babyfit for mom's who are pregnant to stay in touch and for information about staying healthy through pregnancy. Good Luck!

BTW both sites you can join for free!

Yes, start now. My advice on stress eating is to look at the psychology of food and your relationship with it. You know you stress eat so you're there, but controlling it is another thing. There are some good books out there. I didn't read this but heard a radio interview and just hearing that I've been able to lose another 5 lbs!!!

Remember to love yourself and all the lbs, the extra lbs aren't you and you are in control of them. One of the worst pitfalls for me is slipping up and then giving up, only to feel really bad about it 10 minutes later. Now I try to say, "OK I ate more than I should've just now." Then try to identify what was going on that triggered the need to eat for pleasure/comfort. Then say "I'm back on plan" I recently lost the 11 lbs I had after baby #3 (11 years ago!) Have to say a decade changed some things regardless! But exercise is key to toning. Good luck with everything!

The best and natural way to lose extra pregnancy weight and skin is mummy magic weight-loss tea. I have done this just in two months.

Hi N.,

Try a Slow Flow Yoga Class at the Center for Yoga in Birmingham -- be prepared to sweat = ) Bring a towel and water and try to go 3-4 times/week if possible. This will get you on the path....and you will feel amazing after class. Try to breath only through your nose (long deep breaths when you are practicing)...if you stick with it and become pregnant it will be something that you could continue throughout your pregnancy to keep your weight down + sooooo many more benefits!

I reccommend that you try to lose the weight and start an exercise program before you start trying. Get your body used to it and once you've lost the weight you want to lose and are feeling pretty good about the exercising than start trying. You can continue to workout until your pregnant. Once your pregnant take it easy for the first trimester and then gradually start back to your workout routine with modifications for your pregnancy. Good Luck... P.S.BarrysBootcamp is a great workout.. Its short and they have beginner and advanced routines. I am getting my body ready for #4 right now doing barrysbootcamp and I love it... We will start trying in Sept/Oct.

I experienced the same thing with my pregnancies. I managed to only gain 18 lbs with the second pregnancy and 22 with the third. Just try to stay active and keep up with your kids. It took me awhile to lose some after, still working on that. I had two boys and a girl. I went on walks with my kids all summer long to keep my weight off. We lived in TX and it was easier to be outside. Good luck and Congrats!

Now is the perfect time to start, you can also start either a prenatal vitamin, or at least take your Folic Acid, which has to be taken for a few months before you even get pregnant to do what it's supposed to. If you start now, you will be in a much better position to continue while pregnant. You can start yoga, running, walking, pilates (would be great for those muscles down there) and I think that you can do all of those while pregnant too (I know that I have seen yoga and pilates pregnancy cds/classes offered). If you can perfect your diet now too, it will be even easier to eat healthy while pregnant. Remember to check with your dr if you have any health issues, before you start an exercise program. Just make sure there are no complications from the hypothyroid or your medication, or anything else, that you should be careful of.

Good luck!

Hi N.! What a blessing to be a SAHM and growing your family!!

I commend you for working on your health before you conceive again. Folic acid and Essential Fatty acids are a couple of nutrients we moms donate to our babies and often don't rebuild before "donating" again. My own story is that when I had baby #2 no one was talking about needing Folic acid (yes that dates me :) ) but now I find that Drs aren't talking about Folic acid needing to be on the outside of the tablet or we don't absorb it much.

I have some good information on how to choose nutrients that are effective...would that be useful to you?

warmly, M.

I was 20lbs over when I got pregnant. I used that as an opportunity to start a walking program and take nine months to get as healthy as I possibly could for the birth. I walked to the hospital for every checkup - I gained another twenty lbs for my 8lb 13oz son to arrive and lost 35 lbs in the first two weeks after delivery (mostly water). Anyways, I've not really ever gone back to my bad eating habits since, so it was a good thing for me to start.
