I am looking for get-a-way suggestions for Memorial Day weekend. My mom is flying into Dallas and wants to take my daughter (15 months) and myself out for a girls weekend. We are wanting to drive no more than 3 hours, and will stay over night at least one night, possibly two. Objectives are swimming, shopping, outdoor activities, and good food and some R and R. Thanks for the ideas!

Hi L.,

Glen Rose is a nice little town about 2-3 hours from the metroplex, depending on where you live. There is a town square with all kinds of antique stores and shops. Fossil Rim Creek is there, a fabulous wildlife park that you can drive through and feed the animals from your car. And there is also a place where there are real dinosaur tracks. I'm sure there is lots more to do, too. Have fun!

You might try Fredericksburg. It has a lot of specialty stores for shopping and a large park area in the center of town (I think it is called Marketplatz) with a playground and flower garden. We have taken my daughter there (she was about a year and a half), and we had a nice time. They have lots of restaurants and a farmer's market just west of town. A few miles east of town there is a really pretty state park. I can't remember what it is called, but there are these huge hills made out of pink granite. I didn't hike very far when we took my daughter, but she had fun just digging in the rocks on the path. Luekenbach (not sure about the spelling) is also nearby, which is a fun place to visit during the day. Maybe a little rough at night for a baby.

You might also consider spending the night at the Gaylord Texan. You would be very close to home, but you could shop at the Grapevine Mills mall. The Gaylord has all kinds of walking paths and landscaping and some restaurants and shops inside.

Barton Creek resort and spa in Austin is AWESOME! Very fun/cool place to go, but on the pricey side. May be some deals for the weekend, though- even check hotwire and travelocity.

The ideas mentioned are pretty good, but one thing I will point out is make sure you are going to a stroller friendly area. The little shopping towns like Salado & Fredericksburg have a lot of neat places to see. However, many of them have signs saying "no strollers" and the rest of them have lots of breakable things that little ones love to play with! You could go to Austin (3 hrs. away) there is lots to do there. The next day you all could go on down to San Marcos for tons of shopping! San Marcos also has beautiful scenery and glass bottom boat rides at Aquarina Springs where you can see down into the crystal clear water. Have fun! We do a girls weekend (adult only) in my family & we've done lots of different things.... e-mail me if you want more ideas.
