Looking for a place close by that we can drive to for a weekend getaway with my husband. We love to go to Salado and stay at Bed & Breakfast, but looking for another destination that may be similar to that, any suggestions?

Castroville, TX, a historical town with Alsatian (French) roots and lots to see and do. Just east of San Antonio. There is a river nearby and great accomodations, of all types, dining, shopping and sightseeing. A fun visit for a couple or a family.

My hubby and I took our honeymoon in Wimberly TX. It is this quaint little tourist town with lots of secluded cabins etc. It has cute little shops and this awesome glass blowing factory. It is only about 30 min or so from New Braunfels, San Antonio, and San Marcos. We spent some time in Gruene which is in New Braunfels and ate at this awesome place called the Gruene Onion, which I highly recommend. There is also a great place in Gruene called the Grist Mill which has seating right over the comal river. Hope you find just the right place and have fun!

Not sure if you want to be adventurous, but in Austin at Cypress Valley Canopy tours, they have ziplines and other adventurous stuff and best of all they have actual tree houses to stay in, with bathroom and all ameneties needed, very cool and special place. check it out online.
Then you can go to the Oasis , have drinks and dinner and watch the sunset, beautiful. Hope you have fun with whatever you decide.

Pick the area you want to go to and check out this site: www.bbonline.com/tx/. We stayed at the Austin Folk House instead of a hotel last time we were in Austin and have decided that we'll do that again in a heartbeat! Good luck and enjoy.

Fredricksburg is a nice area, and if you enjoy wine there are a few wineeries in the area you can check out. They also have some bed and breakfast inns which you can also find on the bnb link another mom sent you already. Good luck and have a great weekend.

Last Spring we took a trip to Glen Rose. We stayed at the Glen Hotel, a cool bed & breakfast. We went to Dinosaur Valley State Park to see the dinosaur foot prints and then to Fossil Rim Wildlife Park. The kids loved it and the town is nice & quiet. We walked across the Paluxy River bridge from our hotel & played on the playground and then went down to a park where you could swim in the river. Even my one year-old had a great time. Especially exciting was when the giraffe at the Wildlife Park stuck his head through our sun roof and ate out of my hand.

New Orleans is 5 hours - but a wonderful weekend trip. If you haven't been there in a while - it's better than ever and won't dissapoint! We like to stay at the Royal Orleans, which has a great rooftop pool and bar - but there are many B&Bs to choose from, too.

Barton Creek Resort in Austin is closer and really lovely. They have a wonderful spa and superb golf course - good food of course.

If you want to stay even closer to home - The Woodlands Resort has a fantastic pool and also a top of the line day spa - obviously great shopping and restaurants close by. We've done the couples massage there - very romantic fireplace with wine and food brought in upon request.

Others have mentioned Fredricksburg. There is a gem there called "Two Wee Cottages" - the home baked treats and private hot tub are awesome. Magnolia House is another good choice.

Have fun!

Not sure how soon you are wanting to go but we have always loved going to Kemah and staying at The White Texan Pelican. They did have some damage due to the storm but will reopen on May 29,2009. Here is the website http://www.awhitetexaspelican.com/ .....check it out. It is a great place and the owners are just wonderful!!

I love Salado-I got married there 6 years ago (second time around).

I would think my suggestions will be areas you have already thought about but......Wimberly, Georgetown, New Braunsfels, Boerne (love Boerne & many surrounding towns), I also rally like Natchitoches, LA but it is further away. Nice drive though and good towns along the wsy if I remember correctly.

I would highly recommend a Bed & Breakfast. My husband and I have stayed in the following locations and would highly recommend any of them:
Bryan / College Station - www.reveilleinn.com (there are several wineries in the area)
Brenham - www.wrigleyhouse.com (quaint little town and a winery close by)
Gruene - www.gruenehomesteadinn.com (close to the river, New Braunfels and this place has a hot tub and bar with live music on location)
San Antonio - www.bonnergarden.com

Good luck!

We love to go to Huntsville--just 45 to 60 minutes north on I-45. It is a town that is rich in history (Sam Houston lived there and is buried there), and there are many antique shops around the town square and a wonderful down-home restaurant called the Farm House located a block or two south of the square. There is a BEAUTIFUL bed and breakfast a few blocks north of the square called The Whistler. It is run by a charming little lady named Mary Mabel (don't remember her last name!), and she will happily show you around and tell you stories of the old place that has been in her family for generations. In addition, Sam Houston National Forest is just a few miles south of Huntsville, and it is an absolutely beautiful place to take a picnic lunch and even go canoeing if you feel adventurous. If museums are your thing, there are many in Huntsville--the Sam Houston Museum, the Prison Museum (yes--the Huntsville State Prison is there--the Walls Unit is near downtown and is quite imposing with its 20-foot high brick walls), and several others. Another good place to eat is just south of the Sam Houston Museum grounds. It is called the Homestead, I think. The food is five-star gourmet--and the price is a little high, but worth it for a fantastic meal. Another thing: Don't miss the Glenwood Cemetery. (I think that's the name. You can ask anyone in town, and they'll direct you to it.) It's where Sam Houston is buried, along with notables from Texas history. It is fascinating to walk through the cemetery and read the headstones. You'll find many with the same date, as hundreds died from a yellow fever epidemic in the late 1800's, I think. Sam Houston University is there, too, and the campus is really beautiful. Hope this gives you some ideas and that you love it as much as we do!
