We Need a Psychologist for Our Shy Little One. Help W/ School.

My four year-old, Samantha, is my second daughter. She has a five year-old sister who is very out-going and makes friends easily. Samantha is a blast at home, but at school she won't even talk to her teacher. She follows directions, does all her work, but dislikes independent play. She's been in dance and gymnastics. Same thing. Doesn't talk to anyone, but really enjoys the activity. You would never know it at home. She plays with friends, her sister, and communicates well with us. She has what I would call panic attacks, and will refuse to go in to school or to an activity once in a while, but mostly will go without complaint. But she doesn't find even one person to talk to. She used to walk around with her arm over her eyes, but she doesn't do that anymore. I'd like to nip this in the bud and get her some help to deal with it before kindergarten. Anyone know a good psychologist for something like this in the Beavercreek area? Green County?

What can I do next?

She sounds like my youngest, who is now 13, and still a very introverted child.....just like her 45 yr old mother. Her brother and sister are very outgoing, never met a stranger types, and so a lot of people see the youngest one as having a "problem." Unless/until it creates a problem for her, actually stopping her from doing things she WANTS to do, I wouldn't worry about her, especially at her age.
If you're still concerned, though, you could try talking to the school psychologist about her....and my oldest daughter has a good counselor at Integrated Youth Services in Beavercreek.

I don't know if you're willing to go to Yellow Springs, but I took my 10-year old son to a counselor there when he was having problems with being bullied and standing up for himself in school, as well as social issues like not being able to make friends. Her name is Joan Chappelle and she's a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Her office/cell number is ###-###-####. I felt very good about the work she was able to do with my son and highly recommend her. Yellow Springs is just northeast of Fairborn, so depending on where you are in Beavercreek, it's about 10-20 miles. She also has evening appointments, which was a requirement for me since I work during the day.

Hi L.!
What school is she in? Most schools offer counciler support for you child. Does the Base offer anything? I know that Green County Services would have a wonderful list of councilers/phycologist for your daughter.
If she plays well with her sisiter and friends, could you set up play dates with her school mates? Pre-school and Kindergarden can be very overwhelming to a little child, especially after a big move. She may just be more attatched to the things that are more secure in her life...Does she have a security blanket/toy? It might be usefull to get her one (something small that she can keep in her back pack), that way she can have something consistant with her. There's nothing wrong with security blankets/toys, they help many children overcome their insecurity...I hope that this helps and that I haven't offended you. I live in beavercreek aswel and I have a two year old little girl, maybe we can get together sometime for a play date!

Dayton Children's Hospital has a Psy. group. You could check with them. I do not know if they are good or bad have not heard either way. It is always good to check out ohio state medical board to she if they have any action against them. Just keep talking to other parents and you will start hearing whom is good. Also ask your pediatrician and ask you they recommend. I would make sure they specialize in that age group. Take Care

Honestly - unless there is a 'past history' of something dramatic that happened to her - she sounds like a normal child. I don't think I'd worry so much over it, let alone rush her off to a psychologist.

If you are determined to take her to someone - I've heard great things about Constance Ange on Lyons Road. Not cheap though.

Hope that helps,
L.

Hi L. -
I know of a couple of places around Dayton. Good Samaritan has a counseling group that deals with younger kids (I take my 2 year old foster child there and have been very pleased). They've changed the name... I think it's now Samaritan Behavioral Health Youth Resources or something like that. I don't have the phone number with me, but you can call CrisisCare for their number ###-###-#### or the main hospital number ###-###-####. Also, South Community works with young kids, but I don't know if they go down to age 4. I've heard mixed things about South. Their number is ###-###-#### (intake). In Greene County, I've heard mixed reviews on The Community Network, which I think also works with kids. I don't know their number. Of the 3, I would recommend Good Sam. They're located just outside of downtown. Good luck!
