I have my son on medicaid. He was diagnosed with a blood disease, however, it has been in remission, we could have seen the last of the illness?? With that stated, my ex just sent us patient cards for my son toward dental insurance and medical insurance. There is no other information given to me. How does this work, do I need to contact anyone about my son now having insurance? Has someone gone through the same with their child(ren). Would like to know, do we give up the medicaid? Would hate it if my ex loses his job....my job does not carry insurance, I'm still searching for the right one so I can do all this myself, at the moment, this is the best I can do....Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You WOMEN ARE GREAT!!! I have called Medicaid and they have the information now and the doctor's office we usually go to and all systems are a "Go" should my child become ill. Shannon H., I couldn't agree more with you. I am so grateful for my son to have insurance!!! I can't believe what my bill would have been after he was diagnosed, he had four transfusions, multiple stays in the hospital...we are so BLESSED. I wish this for every person, we are AMERICA and it should be easy for everyone to have adequate health care. Bless you ALL!

By law you have to use the Private ins first , the govt (Mediciad ) second. You don't get to pick and choose which one to use ! You may also want to contact the private Ins and tell them he has a govt Mediciad program second, so there won't be a problem later ,when they receive claims. You don't necessarily have to give up the Mediciad ,but , you should also make Mediciad aware of the other Ins.

Legally, the private insurance must be used first. Call the Medicaid office and speak with someone. In some cases they will allow you to "keep" the medicaid as "back-up" if there is just cause.

Point being, Medicaid is need-based and your son no longer "needs" insurance so you shouldn't be accessing it!

You have got great advice, you need to use the primary insurance first and notify medicaid, trust me....you can be held responsible for expenses and it can get tricky legal -wise TRUST me....been down this road, and they will not say it is just ok because you did not know...can be ugly scary.

Keep your Medicaid and the Insurance. Give both to the dr at your next visit. You don't have to let Medicaid know, the dr will bill correctly. Dads insurance will be primary and Medicaid will be secondary. So, you get treated well, as if you have insurance, yet all your copays and out of pocket will be paid by Mediacaid. best of both worlds.

Just beacuase you have private insurance does not mean you don't NEED Medicaid. Copays and deductibles and out of pocket can be in the thousands or even tens of thousands. Having the copay or deductible can mean the differance between going to the dr or not, or picking up the prescription or not! You do what's best for your child and damn the peole that think you don't need it.

Typically the regular insurance would be primary (especially if ex is court ordered to provide it). You will need to notify Medicaid that he has a primary insurance. You will need to notify the primary insurance that he has medicaid.

You can use both. Medicaid will pick up what other insurance doesn't. Consider yourself fortunate to have health insurance better than most people in this country! (And I am not saying that you are ungrateful... the insurance/health care issue in this country just touches a nerve for me ;-)

LOL - believe me, medicaid will KNOW you have private insurance soon and then will make all bills go thru that insurance before coming to them - even if the private insurance picks up in the middle of treatments/appts!

We often have both. The insurance card is used first then the Medicaid picks up the rest. You might call the Medicaid office and find out exactly how to do this but the doctors offices should be familiar with using 2 different kinds of insurance. A lot of elderly people use different cards too.

Just make sure and call the insurance company for a booklet of their approved docs so you are going to one they have on the plan.

You need to call Medicaid and let them know. The private insurance will be used first and Medicaid will be billed the copays.

You can keep both as far as I know and use the good insurance as the main and the medicaid as the 2nd ... my understanding is that the doctor will send to insurance A then to B to cover any other costs ... but I would contact medicaid and give them a hypethetical ... you do not want to get into trouble.

The husband's insurance will become primary and the Medicaid will become secondary. Be sure to give the provider's both of the insurance cards so that they can coordinate the benefits correctly, You still should not have any out of pocket expenses after both insurance's coordinate and pay. I work for a health insurance company and my son became disabled while he was a covered dependent on my plan. He has medicaid as well but my insurance pays first and then Medicaid. Your husband's insurance is considered a commercial insurance and Medicaid is funded by the state so that's why your husband's will pay first. In the event that he loses his job and/or insurance, notify the provider's and Medicaid would be primary again.
