Help my daughter is 4 and she has her first cavity. So far it isn't bothering her but it looks like it should and her breath has been pretty bad. She brushed after breakfast and before bed and used mouth wash and she still has bad breath. I am looking for a just a kids dentist that will understand if she freaks out (which she will). We live in Beaverton and would like something close. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

I have an awesome childrens dentist in NE. His name is Dr. Page and h'es with Pediatric Dentistry. They have two locations, but we see him at 2824 NE Wasco (it's a medical building off 28th, next to Fred Meyer).

His number is: ###-###-####

He's great. My daughter loves him and started seeing him when she was 4. He's very gentle and she's even had a tooth extracted by him and she's still not afraid to go back.

Good luck.

Hi T.,

The most amazing pediatric dentist I ever found was when we lived in Corvallis. My son had two bad experiences at the dentist (dentist wouldn't listen to him or believe him when my son said the drilling was painful and the dentist continued to drill while my son cried in pain). The new dentist was patient and amazing. I think one of the things that really helped make my son relax were these special visors the child put on and they showed a movie while the dentist worked. I noticed my sons anxiety went way down after he got the little visors on. I would recommend asking the office if they have anything like this- in the very least a movie or television for the child to watch while the work is being done. We visit Dr. Morich at Macadam Dental in Portland and LOVE him. He is very calm and his staff are wonderful. Good luck.

I am a pediatric dental hygienist. While there are many pediatric dentists, I happen to respect and love the office I work in. Dr Patricia Ridgley is highly regarded and very experienced! The office is in Tualatin but many people travel hours to see us. If you'd like to check out the website it is www.ridgley.com

Other than that consider decreasing juices, even if they are 100% fruit they are high in fructose (fruit sugar) and the teeth respond the same as they would to sucrose.

Hi T.,
My 4 year old just went to his first dental visit in January. He brushes his teeth, but doesn't floss. Well, he has two cavities and they are in between the back two molers on the bottom which affects two teeth on each side. We have an awesome dentist who is also married to a dentist. Both of my boys have seen both of them and they are wonderful. Their offices are completely kid friendly as well as their staff. They have an open treatment area so that your child can see that other children are doing the same thing, and they have private closed off rooms for doing fillings and other procedures. I was worried about the filling procedure, but it was great. They used laughing gas and novicane. My son watched TV the whole time. He has had one filled so far and has the last one filled in a week. It was a very positive experience for him as well as myself. The dentists have two locations. Eric Downey, DDS 14795 SW Murray-Scholls Dr. #116, Beaverton, OR 97007 ###-###-####. Dr. Carolyn Muckerheide, DDS, 2380 NW Amberbrook Dr., Hillsboro, OR 97006 ###-###-####. Trust me, they are worth it. I will never go anywhere else.

We also see Dr. Karole Wilson. Her office staff is really great! My pediatrician recommended several dentists to me and she was one of them. We've been really pleased.

We had a bad cavity at age 3 (which also didn't seem to bother her), but we ended up needing a baby root canal and crown. We went to Jaqualine Bourdette (very good children's dentist). My daugher freaked out at the appointment, but they did need to put her to sleep for the crown so it was done at Emanuel. Hope this helps.

We go to a Dr. Karole Wilson. She is a pediatric dentist. She is on hall and greenburg. She has toys, stuffies, and a video going in lobby. If she is to far I would look for a pediatric dentist not a regular dentist.

We live in Portland and both of my kids, 2 1/2 and almost 5, love Pediatric Dentistry in Hollywood (it's behind the Fred Meyer on Broadway - Wasco and 28th I think) - in particular they love Matt the hygenist. The practice is kid oriented and lots of fun. They have one in Gresham too. The only other place I've had highly recommended was near the zoo but I do not know the name. Good luck.

Dr Pike DDS
He's located off of Hwy 26 by the zoo.

They are the best and have been a godsend for my son. The office is designed for kids, all open, no doors, they are super patient and don't do any thing until the kids are comfortable and trust that they are safe. Now my 6 year old yips with glee when it's time to have his teeth cleaned!

The most wonderful dentist in the area(from personal experience and from word of mouth) is Dr. Pike in Sylvan. He and his son practice only pediatrics and in a gentle atmosphere. They have two therapeutic dogs and gerbils in the office. They never use any forceful methods. And they are patient!!
Good luck!

I second the recommendation for Dr. Pike. My 5 year old had 2 cavities...I sent Daddy to go with him because I'm THAT much of a wimp. He came home smiling and asked when he gets to go back again. At his last appointment his little sister (3 years old) burst into tears when she found out that she didn't have to see Dr. Pike, just my son. Now I HAVE to make sure that all the kids go to the same appointments. They're AWESOME, and you won't regret taking your child there for a single moment.

Their info: Dr. Downey, 14795 SW Murray-Scholls Dr., #116, Beaverton, 97007, ###-###-####
