Ways to Use Extra Diapers

Hi moms. I have several boxes of diapers that are too small for my baby. Plus I have a big box of Huggies that was given to me as a baby shower gift that I did not really use because I grew to like Pampers. I don't know anyone else that may need these diapers and not sure if anyone would even want opened boxes of diapers. It would seem such al waste to throw them away. Does anyone know of any ways that these diapers can be used?

What can I do next?

Please take them to a pregnancy center or a women's shelter! When I was an 18 year old single mom I had lots of times that I couldn't afford diapers and had to get them from a pregnancy help center. Bless someone else!

M.,

There are so many places to donate diapers to...if you don't have the time, there are some folks that would be happy to come pick them up.

Blessings to you and you little one!

Donate via Help a Mother Out (http://www.helpamotherout.org/) or donate to any women's shelter. There are several in Oakland including the Salvation Army's family shelter on Garden St off of Fruitvale Ave not too far from Alameda. Good luck!

You can always donate them to a local women's and children's shelter. I took all the diapers that were in the three diaper cakes that I got as shower gifts to our local shelter, my son ended up being allergic to something in them. They were so greatfull and took them even though they were not in a box at all. If you don't have a shelter nearby try a church nursery.

Definitely a woman's shelter, or food pantry. Many food pantry's have toiletries and diapers now.

I have never met a mom that wouldn't take someone's leftover diapers. I am sure you can find plenty of moms in your area that would love to have them, either for free or you could sell them at a discount.

Donating them is also a great idea. Women's shelters and charities really need them. Diapers are SO expensive and 100% necessary, so there is always a high demand for them.

Many stores will also let you exchange for a bigger size, though I don't know if you can exchange huggies for pampers.

A women's shelter or church would be happy to have them. Also, if there's a teen pregnancy program in your area they will take them. I found one in my area that helps teen moms with classes on parenting and supplies and they were thrilled to receive the baby things I donated to them.

If you are in Santa Clara County, dial 211 for the United Way "Help Line." Ask the United Way representative where your closest local food bank is, and take the diapers there. Quite often food banks will accept donations of diapers, paper goods, basic household items, children's clothing, etc., and will offer these to the families who come to seek their assistance for food.

Donate?
Make a "diaper cake" for someone who is having a baby.
Drop off at a church, hospital maternity ward (they have their own brand they use but you never know)
Women's shelter.

A women's shelter is a good place to donate them, but so is the nursery or day care at the church. I know my church often needs diapers.

Or you can keep them and use them for other things. If you get scented oil, like that oil for scented sticks, you can put it in the diaper. The diaper absorbs the liquid but releases the scent. Put it in the air vent for a lightly scented room, or in your closet for lightly scented clothes.

They can be used to clean up spills because they absorb way more than a paper towel or hand towel. I kept a few in the car to clean up spills.

When my neighbor cut her hand and had to go to the emergency room, we wrapped a diaper around her hand. It soaked up the blood so no messy dripping towels or rags, and it was thick enough to be able to apply steady even pressure without causing a lot of pain.

I used to put one over my shoulder when my son was sick so if he vomited the diaper would absorb it, helping to keep more of it off me and the furniture.

They make great packaging for breakables. Wrap glasses in them or place between plates when boxing them. Or use them to cradle breakable seasonal items, such as Christmas ornaments.

There are a ton of uses really if you want to keep them.

I have heard that Grey Bears always has diapers. My sister's friend was poor and needed to shop there. How great is it that she could find diapers that were available for less!! It's a thrift store that people donate used stuff too. Their cause is helping low-income elderly. I'm sure Goodwill would take the unopened ones but I'm not sure about the others. However, as many people have mentioned a shelter would need them. If you are just looking to get rid of them, you could probably even put them out with a free sign and I'm sure they'd be gone in a heartbeat!

Donate them. Women's shelters, Daycare centers (Kindercare for example). These types of locations have babies of all ages and can always use extra diapers.

There is an online community called Freecycle. Once you join (no fee), you can offer them and someone (I'm sure!) will offer to take them off your hands. It's a great place to offer (and request) stuff that may otherwise end up in the landfill. It's a good place to get things directly to someone instead of going thru Goodwill. Check it out. You may also donate them to a shelter too.

M., there are many wonderful organizations that will GLADLY take your open boxes of diapers! Olivianna's Closet ###-###-#### or ###-###-#### will distribute them to moms in need. Other organizations would include the Red Cross or your local women's shelter. Alternatively, you can post them on Freecycle.

Take them to your nearest homeless shelter or battered women's shelter or drugs and alcohol rehabilitation center that allows children. There are any number of social service agencies that would welcome them!

Hi! I'm not sure if these places would take open packages of diapers, but you might try domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, childcare programs, or maybe even call your local domestic violence center's line & ask if they know of any places that would take them.
I hope you find someplace!

You can always donate them! I work for a nonprofit in San José, CA and diapers is definitely one of our needs. Low-income families cannot afford to buy diapers as often as baby needs them, so they come to us for help. Search for a local nonprofit where you could donate them. I'm sure that they'd really appreciate it! G.

Are you a member of Berkeley Parents Network? It's a website and free list serve for parental/house hold/life questions. They also do a market place email about once a week, you can post in the free section that you have diapers. Many folks post about open diapers or other items that are in new condition but can't go back to a store. A lot of non-profits are on the lists, so if you can't find a shelter near you to donate to post on Berkeley Parents Network. (You don't need to live in Berkeley to join, just need to be in the bay area, east bay preferred). Here's their website: http://parents.berkeley.edu/

if you dont donate, try a reasle shop. you might be able to trade them for store credit to get your baby some gently used clothes or something.
So far as using them? i dunno......to soak up huge spills? lol those little crystals soak up a lot of water. I wonder if you sprinkled some of those in house plants if they wouldn't do a good job of extended realease watering? Im reachin here, tryin to answer your original question!

Make a "diaper" cake to give as a gift to some one else at a baby shower, or donate them to a battered woman's shelter. Even some catholic charities take every thing from diapers to toys and crib sheets.

We have a pregnancy resource center in our town that you could donate them to. I can give you the address if you are interested. I think we are about an hour and half away from you. They have parenting classes for young girls and boys and they can earn Mommy or Daddy dollars to buy stuff in their store....like diapers, cribs, changing tables, etc.....

Anyways, you may have something like that in your town too, if not and you are interested, I will give you the address, maybe you could just mail them!

Donate them to a childcare center, crisis pregnancy center, church or other facility that has childcare. Lots of places will take them as long as they are clean.
