Watermelon Stains

My daughter dripped watermelon juice all over her white tank. When it dried it looked more orange like spaghetti sauce. Anyway I pretreated it with Oxiclean and imagine my surprise when it came out of the washer still orange! Oxiclean takes out black raspberry stains so what gives with watermelon? What has worked for you?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had Oxi Clean powder on hand so I attempted soaking the shirt (and a few other items) overnight. The watermelon stains remain, the pizza sauce residue came out of a different shirt and the light tan shorts look marginally better from dirt build up. I still have yet to dry the tank so it looks like I better try Shout since that seems to be the overwhelming response.

I'll keep you posted and thank you everyone that took the time to respond!!

A friend told me this trick and it works even on colored clothes: Dilute 1/4 cup bleach in a small pan with very hot water. Soak the stain for a few seconds, then rub under cold water until the bleach mixture is out. Repeat as needed until the stain is out. I thought for sure I was going to ruin my daughter's pink dress, but I figured the washed in chocolate stains had ruined it too, so what the heck? Seriously, the dress was as good as new. I did it today with a bunch of whites. I ended up upping the bleach content, but the shirts look shiny and new. Good luck!

I tried oxyclean a long time ago. It did nothing for me. I went straight back to my Shout. That is ALL I ever use. On really bad stains, or stains that I didn't find right away (like my kid coming home from camp and he spilled something on the first day's clothes).. I use the Shout Advanced. It needs to be left on overnight before laundering.

I use Shout on all stains. If after washing the stain is still there, I soak in Oxyclean overnight. I do not put clothes in the dryer so they never get a chance to set. My 2 year old is NOT a neat watermelon eater and I have had no problem getting it out.

one of the best stain cleaners is Amodex. Not available everywhere, but is sold at Giant and stop and shop grocery stores. In fact, I came across it when I couldnt' get expo pen out of a shirt. It works great on watermelon and strawberries, as well as paint and pen. Even took melted blue crayon out of my car seat. Otherwise I soak thing in Oxyclean for days time and time again. Like someone else said do not out in a dryer until the stain is out or it sets it. Good luck, I know only too well how you feel!!

When I treat a stain, I make sure not to dry it when it comes out of the washer unless, I am sure the stain is gone. I had watermelon on my sons shirt and immediately put some original dawn dish soap on it and washed it in warm water. It totally came out. I use dawn also for grease stains, blueberry stains. The main thing is to make sure not to rub the culprit of the stain into your clothes. Make sure to saturate it in the dawn dish soap and let it sit at least thirty minutes then wash it in the hottest water the stain can accept.

I prefer Dreft stain remover spray to all the others. It works wonders, even on older stains.

Get out watermelon or berry stains quickly! This is so simple you won't believe it. Boiling hot water. That's it! I had no idea. I've ruined and lost so many clothes over the years before I learned this trick. All you do is boil some hot water and dip the stain in it. Sometimes I have to leave the stain in it for up to a minute or more but then I take it out and let the fabric cool enough to rub it together a little to make sure the stain is out. If I need to repeat the process I do--but it has never failed. The stain ALWAYS comes out! My mom told me when she was little my Grandma told her if she got berries on her clothes they were ruined. Wouldn't she have loved to know it was this simple?! Wow!
