Water Filters - Spring,TX

Last week, I noticed the scent of our water changed from very slight-chlorine to scummy-lake. Apparently our water suppliers have switched from deep wells to surface water. The flavor of it now affects even our coffee in a very negative way - scummy lakes do not taste good.
I don't like bottled water. I would prefer to keep using our tap water and use some sort of filtering system I could set up myself. I'm only vaguely familiar with the Brita brand. Could any of you give any recommendations? Thank you.

Sorry you've gotten such degraded water all of a sudden.

Don't know about the new model Patty mentions, but I have the old Shaklee Bestwater system. It's expensive up front, but does a superb job of cleaning and delivering sweet, clean water.

Brita is better than no filter, but not nearly as good as a reverse osmosis system, if you can afford it.

I have a Brita pitcher and LOVE it. My water doesn't taste like tap, but it also doesn't taste like bottled water. Just good clean and cold water. Even my dad who thought I was silly for wanting one, likes it. A lot.

My husband and I recently moved from Oregon where we had very clean pure well water and I guess we were kind of spoiled. We were apalled by the heavily chlorinated very hard water that came out of the tap in our new home. It was unhealthy and for us undrinkable.

We have tried the brita filter and the pur filter on our tap and neither quite did the trick for us. We now have a reverse osmosis system that we bought at Lowes, in our opinion it was reasonable, and we are drinking much more water. It is SO much better, very crisp clean and fresh tasting and so easy. Definitely worth the investment long term (and you could uninstall and take with you easily if you move) under the sink reverse osmosis is the only way to go in our opinion.

We have a Brita and really like it. You can pickup the filters just about anywhere and it is convenient. If you want to purify it, you should find out what the quality is, and what needs to be purified out of it before you buy anything. The Brita will take out the stuff that makes it taste bad.

Good luck.

Brita doesn't filter micro-organisms at all. Pur filters some of them. I have a Pur filter that I use for cooking. I fill up at a reverse-osmosis station every few weeks for drinking water. I too have lived overseas and am very picky about my water consumption:)

We have used a table top Brita filter for years-way cheaper to replace filters than to buy bottled water and better for the environment. We have a Brita filter system attached to our ice maker. BTW, we collect and use rain water-might find some sights on that. Our tea is never cloudy!! The only thing was our kids had to take dental fluoride supplements when younger cause the water companies add it to the drinking water and they weren't getting any from the rain water. Trivia-(El Paso has the highest amount of added fluoride and record healthy teeth)

We have a Pur filter that attaches onto the tap. It works for us, is readily available and you can turn it on and off easily. I think the Brita and Pur systems are pretty similar. My father it very picky about drinking water (he lived in India for a few years) and has a water distilling machine which probably costs a couple of hundred dollars. But the water always tastes perfect.

You probably need to get your water tested. It may not necessarily be your supplier, but something in your pipes, or anything... We've been on a well for the past couple of years since we bought our house, and when our water started tasting funny, we immediately called the well service. They found our well was rusted & one of the pipes busted. It made a huge difference when we got that all fixed.
As far as just a filter/taste issues... we lived in West Texas for a while and the water always tasted dirty to me for some reason. We got one of those Pur filters you just hook up to the tap and it was much better. You have to change the filter every few months, which adds up over the long term, but if you don't have the $$ up front to pay for a whole house filtering system, it does the job.

We use a Brita. I like it a lot. It really helps the water and it's an inexpensive way of filtering your tap water (however, your ice cannot be filtered this way unless you have a filter in your refrigerator). The best solution is an osmosis system. Which will cost you a few hundred dollars. I've always wanted to install one but who wants to drop $300 for something unnecessary. Someday.... :) I think Costco and Sam's sells them (but you'll need to hire an plumber to install it).

I had a Brita faucet mounted filter a few years ago. It sucked. I've been buying bottles water for a few years because I couldn't stand the taste of the tap. I bought a Pur pitcher filter a month ago and really like it a lot. I'm pretty picky on my water tastes too.

I'm a total water snob - if it has any sort of smell or taste, I won't drink it. I use the Brita filter that hooks onto your faucet and it works great. Cheaper than reverse osmosis!

I highly suggest a water distiller. They come in different sizes and prices, and they get rid of everything in the water. You can choose a size that fits your family's needs.

Shaklee just came out with a new system that is fantastic. It reduces up to 99% of lead, which I don't believe the other brands do. It's pretty amazing and it tastes great. I'm a Shaklee Independent Distributor and so we tried it right away. We are very happy with it because it has no weird tastes, it does not have to be refrigerated and I trust Shaklee to get the bad stuff out. Let me know if I can tell you more about it.

I see lots of people with lots of products. This new system is pretty great and anyone interested I'd be happy to talk to you. Here are some of the cool features that make it different:

• Certified to reduce lead (Brita® and PUR® are not!3)
• Certified to filter 80 gallons—twice as much as Brita® and PUR®2
• First-ever pitcher with refillable carbon-block filter system
