Hi Mamas,

I was wondering what experiences, good, bad or ugly, you have had with tap water filters like Brita and Pur (or other brands)? I am extremely sensitive to the taste of my water I drink and cook with, but I am also looking to save money right now. I was hoping to find a water filter that would do a really great job so that I can cancel the water service I have. Any stories, suggestions, tips or info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. :)

hi, I use a brita and I love it. I have to change the filters about once every two months. After I started using it I found that the water tastes better and I actually started drinking it more. I don't have the kind that hooks to the faucet, it's has it's own container that I leave on my counter, but you can put it in the fridge if you like. I get 3 filters for about $15.oo. Hope this helps.

HI,
I have used the brita that attaches to my faucet. I loved the taste but I had such a hard time keeping it on my faucet. I would maybe recomend the pitcher one. Though the filters are very expensive. I am back to buying bottled water from fresh and easy.....24 bottles for 2.99!!
Good luck

I love Pur much better than Brita! I too have a senstive taste to water... If you spend a little extra and get the best filter it is even better!!

As others suggested i am also using Brita pitcher for water. Although i recently got RO system but its attached to my refrigerator and for cooking am still using Brita water. As someone suggested about Culligan it seems so inexpensive. I am thinking to get one in my sink like that because Brita's water capacity is very less plus it takes time to filter the water in case you forgot to fill it in advance. If you want RO and softener system then Costco Home does that in 1000 bucks. It cost me around 1600 bucks because my house was not pre-plumbled for it. If you have pre-plumbing then you can save that cost.

PUR has had higher ratings and standards in the past. I personally found it could take chlorine taste out better than Brita.
You may end up changing filters more often than recommended on the box though...if your water is particularly bad. It may even cost you as much as your water service.

We have the britta pitcher and I really like the taste of the water. I just bought 10 of the filters at costco for $40 and that will last us for at least a year.

We have had good experience with and have heard from others too that the inline water filters for refrigerators work well. not sure if your refrigerator has water so that that is an option for you?

Just thought I would bring it up in case.

Try a Whirlpool Under Sink Reverse Osmosis Filtration which can be purchased from a local chain store.

We moved here and DISLIKE the taste of our city water here in Buckeye. So we bought a Brita water pitcher and it did not filter out the taste at all. So that was a waste of money for us.
We just go and fill up water jugs from a RO (Reverse Osmosis) machine (most are 25 cents a gallon but we know where .15/gal machines are).

When we buy/build a house, we will make sure it has RO in the kitchen.

My partner has many NSA (National Safety Associates, out of Memphis, TN) bacteriostatic water filters he is selling at a discounted price. The filters will "remove chlorine, bad taste, odors and colors, and make the water clearer and better tasting. Inhibits bacteria growth within the unit." Where do you live...we are in Cottonwood, AZ. He is selling each unit for $40, and it mounts right into a existing sink faucet. I have been using one for all of my drinking water, and I appreciate it. I also recommend the spring in Oak Creek Canyon, if you are in Sedona. E-mail me, if you would like to purchase one, of to get more information. ____@____.com

I have tried both the pur & the brita they help alittle but they both still taste funny to me and seem to add another funky flavor to the water. I think both were a waste of money. The little help they did do was not very long & i was replacing the filters after just a few uses. I would reccomend a ro system if you could afford the up front cost you wind up saving so much in the end plus your water isnt nasty.

I tried the PUR one that hooked on the faucet. The water was good but I couldn't get it to stay on my faucet. I plan to just get a full water system for my house. I am going to go through Amway. My sister has one and loves it! You can look at it at www.dreamfit.mychoices.biz

We had the Pur brand that connects right to the faucet. It worked great. I also cannot stand the taste of tap water and the filter helped tremendously. I have a fridge with a water and ice maker now and we just use water from there since its filtered but the tap water filter works great too. We had one that would also indicate when you should change the filter with a green light that would turn red.

Hello!
We have had the Britta pitcher before and liked it okay from a water quality perspective. However, the quantity is lacking. It was a bit of a hassle, as there is only so much of it in one pitcher. If you wanted to cook with it, i.e. pasta, you really have to plan ahead and start filtering an hour so before.
We have now a Culligan under the sink filter that needs to have a $26 cartridge exchanged every 6 months. We love it as there is always filtered and good tasting water there and no one needs to remember to fill anything. We had an extra hole in our sink that was originally meant as a soap dispenser and we simply used that for the filter faucet. I would get it again if I had to.

Hope this helps!

We have had good luck with Pur or Shaklee as far as tap filters, BUT what we just started doing to save money, we canceled our service and bought a 5.00, 5 gallon jug and we fill it at these fill stations for 1.00. It is kind of a pain, but it does save money. Also getting a reverse osmosis system installed under your sink is the same as delivered water. Costs about 150.00 plus installation. Hope that helps, C.

i have a Brita pitcher and i love it. it takes a bit of time for it to filter but now that we are only two at home we made it a rule that whoever takes water out refills it immediatley so that the next person will have enough. our municipal water is awful. it is an old mining town and it tastes like moldy water right out of the tap. i drink a lot of water so it has been a blessing. the taste is great and it has a cool little reminder for changing the filter right on the lid. it is also slim and fits well in the refrigerator.

My dentist said that Brita is the only water filter that keeps in the fluoride, and filters out everything else, so he wanted me to use that for our family as opposed to any other type of filtered water. Yes it does take time, but I don't use it for large quantities like cooking, because when you boil water it kills all bacteria, although minerals in the water will remain (including lead). It's all a compromise! I hope it helps!

We started using the Pur water filter which attaches to your faucet. I'm very particular also about the taste of water and can't stand tap. We've been using this filter - 3 stage and it's wonderful! Our water takes great and you can really tell when the filter is expended and it's time to replace it. I use it for drinking and cooking and love it.
