Washing Machine - Carol Stream,IL

After 19 years and only one repair bill I think my washer is giving up the ghost. It refuses to drain the water in the tub. The knob on top changed to the next cycle when it should have stopped. When I opened the washer top it also smelled like something was burning. Does anyone know what it could be? I am thinking the motor and/or pump. Are they easy to repair? Or would it be cheaper to buy a new one. Just need the basics - money is tight.

Thanks
J.

I just went thru the same thing myself. We had an extended warranty on the dryer and have used it 3 times but the washer is so old we didn't have any kind of service agreement. It is more than likely going to cost at least $100 just to have a repairman walk thru the door. We went to home depot and bought an Amana large capacity washer for 399.00 and it will be delivered friday. I also plan to sign up for the extended warranty which is 99.00 for 4 years and starts coverage after the 1st year. shop around you may find some pretty good deals. You might also consider a place like rent-a-center which lets you rent to own although the interest can be high, if you pay ahead you can cut down the amount of interest you're paying.

When my washer wouldn't drain, it was due to the plastic sensor that told it the lid was closed which had broken (from an unbalanced load). The burning smell might be from a belt, but you can't tell til they take it apart. I've had quick, courteous service from D&B appliance service ###-###-#### or ###-###-#### or ###-###-####). There was a coupon in the phone book (one of those generic ones). Good Luck! If you decide to replace it, check out the Sears outlet-you may be able to get a scratched one for a good price.

Actually I am having the same problem except only my washer is not spinning. I am unsure also if I should repair or replace.
Please let me know if you find out anything on the matter. I know they charge just to come out.
Thanks

If it smells like somethings burning it could just be a belt. It doesn't really take much to unplug it and take the back off and see......it's dead anyway right?? Belts don't cost much, if that's what it is. Go on line and I'm sure there are sites that walk you step by step through it. I fixed my a couple times and I'm a Grandma!

I would say 19 years is a pretty good life for a washing machine. We repaired our washing machine twice by ourselves after the 10 yr mark and got another 3 yrs out of it. Both were very inexpensive repairs with parts being around $5. I called a local appliance store explained the problem and they told me what they thought was wrong and I bought the part from them. They sort of explained how to install it and I looked it up online. It took some time to do it but it was worth it. As long as it isn't an electrical problem most repairs aren't difficult it is just the labor. This is coming from someone with very little handyman skills. If I can do it, I am sure you can! Good luck.

You can check the thrift stores, sometimes they have received donated appliances. The appliances are tested before displayed, and you know it goes to a good cause.
Salvation Army or Sparrow's Nest(Home of the Sparrow). 19 years is a long time for a motor or pump so it wouldn't be a surprise. If you look for an energy star washer you'll be saving on your electric bill, you will be using the savings toward payments, just like the Laundrypure. You save on energy, detergent and rewash.

It is probably time for a new washer because it is either a belt or the motor.
Can I make a suggestion? Go with a front load washer. It uses less water, cleans the clothes better and even uses less detergent. When my washer went I had done my research and it was a front load that won by a long shot. I have had mine for close to 7 years and love it.
My sister said she would never go with a front load so she went out and bought another top lead. She has had it for only 4 years and she is all ready having problems with it. Washers, Driers or any appliances are not made like they were 19 years ago. They are now made cheaply and throw away.
If you go with a front load make sure to get one with a big door. I went with a smaller door and have problems doing my sons sleeping bag. When I take it over to my girlfriends she has no problems. Because she has the bigger door. My girlfriend has a Kenmore (she bought on e-bay from a Sears store).
Good Luck

After 19 years, you've gotten a great machine. It could be the belt as already mentioned with the burning smell. I've never heard of a machine jumping to the next cycle though. You could try to call an appliance repair place others have mentioned as ask if it would be worth it to repair. I have done this with my stove (oven had a glue trap placed and I didn't know). It was not worth the $185 to completely clean out the vents for the oven. You might find out that buying a new one saves you money since the one you have most likely is not as efficient with energy use.
