A friend of mine just found out she was pregnant and has been using a generic version of Proavtice acne prevention. It contains Benzoyl Peroxide and I thought I had read something that said this was bad for pregnant people to use??? Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Thanks!
K.

Yes Benzoyl peroxide is classified as pregnancy category "C" meaning can pose potential harm to fetus, esp the first trimester.
Pregnacy categorys are made for drugs, and classified as A-D. A is the safest, while D is proved to be harmful to the fetus.

She should stop it and talk to her physician about using it.

I also thought that acne medications are harmful to a fetus. I would not take it. I actually didn't take anything at all while I was pregnant (except pre-natals). I think it's better to be safe than sorry, even if the dr. says it's okay. Having a few pimples is well worth the assurance that the baby isn't receiving anything that could harm him.

Hi! I have been using Proactiv for 7 years...so this was a concern of mine when I became pregnant with my first child. I asked my OBGYN & Dermatologist and both said it was fine to use during pregnancy and no need to stop. So...I did use it throughout my pregnancy and since then used it during my second pregnancy as well. I now have 2 healthy beautiful daughters (one 2 yrs. old & the other 5 months old)....no problems or issues at all with either one of them.

I used the same product and my OB said it was fine. But I also foiund my acne cleared up when I was pregnant so it wasn't necessary to use any acne products. Good luck to your friend.

There are so many opinions on this topic and some "experts" say it won't cause harm, some say it might. I didnt use any acne products while pregnant and my skin too looked better while pregnant and has been better after than it was before. The ingredients in your skincare product (and all other personal care products you use) do get into your bloodstream and do get to the baby so why take the chance, IMO. Besides the bezoyl peroxide and glycolic acid etc, all the chemical preservatives that are in there are also not good for you and your baby. It is a personal choice and for me I have stopped using as much chemical filled products as I can.

Hi! I had similar questions about ProActiv and I also use a Glycolic Acid product. I read that Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid are not recommended in pregnancy by some people, but I spoke with multiple OB's (I go to ao group practice so I have had to meet all of the doctors), and my dermatologist (who has been pregnant twice in the last 5 years since I've been seeing her) and all of them say that it is fine to use both products. My derm also said that she herself used these products through both pregnancies and she is a very respected doctor by other physicians I have seen.
They have all told me that of course not using products or doing anything like dying your hair or getting manicures would be the best thing since there would be no questions, but they also think it's unrealistic and that all of those things are fine in moderation. Hope that helps! (PS. I'm still using my products too!)
