Warts on My Youngest Son

Hello all~
I have a six year old boy who has developed a skin condition on his face. At first it looked very much like a pimple on his eyebrow, but if you picked it .. it was hard and just bled so I stopped touching it except to clean it once a day. Well, now it is spreading on his face. A friend said the bumps were warts. Horrors! Not on my babys FACE! Ugh. Anyway, I went to wholefoods and bought some cream and homeopathic stuff for warts. Its not getting better. I have heard that even if I take him to the Dr it will just have to run its course. Does anyone have any experience with this? If its going to run its course.. when is that going to happen?
Thanks so much,
A.

So What Happened?

Hello everyone,
Thank you to everyone who responded. I actually used a referral from this board. I took my son to Dr Carrasco on Travis St in the med center TODAY! He said it was molluscum contagium (viral warts), he said it would go away if I opted to not treat it, but that it would take a very very long time. So, since Julian is actually bothered by them and is fearful of them spreading we went ahead and treated it. He put liquid nitrogen on the bumps. Julian wasnt thrilled with the cold stinging of it, but the candy after the fact softened him up~! I had zero qualms about accepting that candy!! he said no Aldera bc too close to his eyes. Anyway, we go back in two weeks. The bumps still look the same.. we'll see what happens.
Thanks again for all of the great feedback!
A.

Hi A.,

I don't believe its warts,i think its just a rash. But what you can do is buy some hydrocortisone 1% cream at the drug store are walmart, most stores sell it. I beleive it would work, because it works for all skin condition. i used the cream on my baby skin when she was just 3 months old when she had a bad skin condition, i used it once a day. Even as she gotten older when ever she breaks out i put it on her.?You can also request a stronger dose if the 1% cream doesnt work.

wish you luck!

If I was you I would bring him to the doctor as soon as possible. The doctor could give some medication to put on it. He/she would also know what caused it and when or if it would go away.

You should really take him to the Dr. Let them diagnise what it is before you put things on it from the store which might inflame it and even make it worse.

Hi A.,

This skin condition sounds to me like mulluscum contagiousoum. They are worts.. can be very bothersome..I have 3 sons and they all have had this problem..

My middle child had this 1st. I took him to the derm in LR at Arkansas Childrens Hospital. He prescribed some medicine called Aldera and said to get some wart remover from Walmart.. Put both meds on the warts at night every night. It will irritate the skin so be carefull on his face.. Do NOT pick them. this is how they spread. And it will leave scars. My middle son has a few scars on his torso from me picking them.

My other kids also got this-- it does have to run its course.

The doctor here in Eldorado said to pick them and they will go away. It is very painful for them and the wart will bleed uncontrollably. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. I promise they will go away just be patient and put the meds on to clear them up.

I hope this helps!!

M. (mom of 3 boys--6,3, and 15 months)

I think you should take him to the dr. He has not been diagnosed with warts. It could be something else. And I believe they have creams and such that help.

My son keeps picking up all sorts of things from the boys locker room at school. I took him to the dermo for a rash on his neck and after my dermo thurough checkup on his belly he found wart like things that isn't what he called them though. I think they are just in the wart class he said he only typically saw them in preschool aged children. He said if we found anymore to bring him in immediatly. He removed them in the office. I would defiantly see your dermotoligist and I would be happy to recommend mine if you live in the Clearlake area. Just let me know. Good luck

My daughter had what sounds like the same thing last year. Only the bumps were on the back of her neck and a few under her arms. It is a virus called moluskum contagium (sp). It is very very contagious so its good to tell them not to scratch or touch. My pediatrician diagnosed it first and then after 3mos. of waiting, we finally got in to see a dermatologist. He gave me some special cream to put on it, but basically said it will just have to run its course. By the time we had gotten in to the dermatologist it had already begun to clear up anyway. But they told me the virus doesn't do anything other than cause the bumps. So its mostly just embarassing for the child. It is most commonly found in warm humid climates. Good luck! And remember, don't pick at them, it will just cause them to spread!!

Dear A.:
My son had some on his fingers. We got a good wart remover from Kroger (any department store will do). We used DuoFilm, a Salicylic wart remover. Other brands have a similar ingredient and probably work well, too. You cannot use it for eyelids, genital areas and lips, but eyebrows should be OK, because the skin is neither thin, wet or in a fold there.

Expect a little sting, one to two weeks of ongoing treatment and some discoloration to brown where you put it on (goes away after the treatment). You can get skin colored band-aids to put on both for the looks and to make sure it does not rub off too soon. Wash your hands after contact and don't inhale that stuff, just to be sure.

It did not show any difference for a week, then it healed up. Don't give up too early. It's probably best if you put it on while he lies down for a few minutes to prevent it from going into his eyes.

Alternatively, a doctor may offer a one-time treatment, which 'freezes' the wart. It may take a while to go away, but you don't have to remember to put stuff on twice every day.

Good luck. In addition to the not-so-great looks, warts are dangerous in that they can spread. So close to the eyes I would definitely do something, not wait it out. I am NOT a doctor, so you should double-check at least with the pharmacist if not his pediatrician.

BTW, if he wears glasses, you may want to put a band-aid or something on the frame so that it does not rub against it. Even if he looks dorky for a while, I would play it safe.

Regards,
W.

My oldest had some weird warts that developed in all places right above her privates along her panty line. We went to the dr. all the time to have them checked and I was told they would just have to run there course, she had them for over a year. Well they ran their course alright, got infected we spent a week in the hospital hooked up to IV's had to have surgery to drain them and remove most of them, they had turned to huge infected boils. She then after we were out of the hospital proceeded to have 4 more boils from them all around the first ones incision. So I would suggest getting them checked out and having a dr keep an eye on them. You never know what can happen.

Take him to the doctor, it is probably nothing, but better to be safe than sorry.
