Hi Mommas!

We are currently feeding our 3 1/2 month old son powder formula. We make the bottles using room temp bottled water. Do you think we need to warm the bottle? What does warming the bottle do for the baby?

What can I do next?

For my oldest I always warmed his bottle which caused a big pain and inconvience cause that's the only way he would take and if I was out i would always had to have warm it which was not always accessible. As far as for my youngest I learned not to start warming it from the beginning so I gave him powered formula w/room temp water which worked Great and if the bottle was cold from the fridge I would just let it sit 20 minutes prior to his schedule feeding and would be just fine or I would warm it just to take the chill off. At night "bedtime" I would warm it cause there is nothing better than a nice warm bottle of milk and I still do that which he likes and in the morning too. But he will drink straight from the fridge if neccessary.

I hope this helps.

My Dr. told me to feed the baby however she preferred it. We used the cans that you have to refrigerate & she actually preferred hers cold. She didn't get tummy aches or anything like that.

we always served ours room temp. so long as its not upsetting their tummy, all warming it is doing is creating a habit you have to keep up with! If you stay with room temp, you can always take a bottle of water and some powder with you, and have bottles ready easily!

If its room temperature its just fine for your little man, warming the bottles is just a comfort thing. Like if you tried to breastfeed they might be used to it, b/c that's always the right temperature, but its not necessary to warm.

When we started our son on powder formula his pedi told us not to use bottled water because bottled water does not have fluoride in it and babies really need the flouride to protect their teeth. Some of our friends only used bottled water to mix their daughter's formula and when their pedi found, they said, he basically read them the riot act. All we would do was use warm tap water. It was so much easier.

I only used room temp nursery water. I have never heated a formula bottle for my kids. Bottles are hassle enough in themselves!

The temp doesn't make a difference. It just depends on what your baby prefers. If he likes room temp, then so be it! :) My daughter took any temp, even cold.

Our pedi. said the same thing- temp makes no difference- so room temp will always make it easier on you!

I fed my baby both warm and cold bottles...it didnt make a difference. But since my hubby kept fighting me on the cold bottle issue I started warming them again.

I actually used tap water and would boil 32 oz of water and mix the formula in a jug. Make her individual bottles and warm in the microwave as needed. If I used breast milk I would warm it up in a bottle warmer...never gave that cold.

If mixing bottles on the go I used Nursery Water since it has floride in it and just fed it to her at room temp. She now wont drink Milk cold I have to warm it up for her. But mixing formula is easier in Hot water and let it cool before serving in the fridge.

If you are going to premix large amounts only mix what your baby will drink within the 24 hours.

For my oldest, we warmed all her formula. At the time, we did it so it wouldn't be so different from breast milk, which of course is very warm. We didn't want my daughter to prefer one over the other because I had problems with production so we tried to keep them as close in temp as we could. That was a tip we got from a breastfeeding specialist. For my youngest, however, when we were in the hospital, one of the nurses gave my son a room temp bottle of formula and I was like "Wow! You can do that?" and she was like "Sure!", so we used room temp formula whenever possible. We did warm it when it came from the fridge, but my son was not as picky as my daughter so as long as it wasn't cool or cold, he would drink it.

Hi A.,

I never warmed any bottles for either of my boys. I just served them at warm temperature. It is so much easier than warming them for every meal.

Good luck! C.
